Good morning and welcome to sunday today on this september 10th. Im willie geist. This morning there is a desperate race to find survivors in morocco after a 6. 8 magnitude earthquake struck in the overneat hours on friday killing more than 2,000 people. Those who survived forced to sleep in the streets with their homes and surroundings buildings reduced to rubble. We are live on the scene with the latest. Then, we will turn to a much brighter story here at home as 19yearold american phenom coco gauff wins the u. S. Open in thrilling fashion. We will go oneonone with coco just ahead. Plus, our sunday focus on whats driving the recent uptick in covid cases including a positive test for First Lady Jill Biden. How concerned should we be with a new vaccine on the way as early as this week . Then, our sunday spotlight on the hottest show around as we turn the tables on the host of hot ones. The viral hit that makes celebrities sweat. And later, a new sunday sitdown with the woman of the moment in music, Olivia Rodrigo, on the highly anticipated followup album to the grammy winning debut that made her an International Sensation with a style she developed at a very young age. Do you remember those first songs when you were 12 . Yeah, its so funny. I still have them on my phone. Gosh, i had such perspective. I would write feminist songs about all these people that wronged me or issues that i had. You were in sixth grade. Whats going on . A new sunday sitdown with Olivia Rodrigo, plus, another lifewell lived later in the show. Lets begin with the scene of destruction and despair in morocco after a massive earthquake struck there this weekend. Nbcs raf sanchez has made his way to the citys epicenter. Whats it like there . Reporter good morning. We are in a Mountain Village about 30 miles east of the epicenter, and throughout this village you can see homes that are either completely destroyed or, like the one behind me, are partially collapsed, in danger of total collapse. This village was home to 3,000 people, but local people here tell us some 40 of them were killed on friday night. More than 1 of the population that has lost their lives here, and they are part of a growing National Death toll that has climbed above 2,000. The rescue effort here is fiendishly complicated, the destruction is not concentrated in a single area. It is spread through villages like this and the roads to get here are winding, narrow and treacherous. In some places they are blocked by heavy boulders. Hand by patient hand digging neighbors out from underneath the rubble. One person was rescued in this village yesterday giving hope there may be more survivors still to be found. We are still in the golden 72hour window when it is the best chance to find people alive. Time is running out, though, and this rescue operation gets more desperate by the hour. Willie . Those overhead shots are just breathtaking of the destruction. As you say, lets hope there are survivors to be found and rescued there. Raf sanchez in morocco, thanks so much. Now to a much happier moment. Last night at the u. S. Open in new york 19yearold american coco gauff defeated the soontobe number one ranked player in the world to win the first of what could be many major championships in her budding tennis career. Nbcs Aaron Gilchrist was there, and he spoke with coco after her thrilling win. Aaron, good morning. Reporter hey, willie, good morning. I think its safe to say coco is still on cloud nine. She knew she faced a formidable opponent on the court and would have to be aggressive to win. The overwhelming joy of victory washing over coco gauff, the 19yearold battling her way to her first grand slam victory. I just knew that if i didnt give it my all, i had no shot at winning. Aryna is an incredible player. Reporter the tennis phenom ultimately defeating Aryna Sabalenka after losing the first set in this, their sixth meeting. Sabalenka will be ranked number one in womens tennis, but this championship. Your first win at the u. S. Open, you ran up to your folks. Crazy. Still a surreal moment to hold this trophy and see it so up close and personal. A lot of emotions that i still havent even processed yet. Reporter more than 28,000 people filling Arthur Ashe Stadium chanting cocos name holding their collective breath. Gauff thankful so many came along for her meteoric rise. My whole career but especially in this tournament is something i will never forget. I want like her when i grow up. I hope i can be as good as her when im older. Reporter we saw some young girls here outside watching. Youre a National Role model. Yeah, thats really crazy. I remember being a girl coming to this tournament and watching, and to achieve this dream ive had since i was little, is a moment i am forever grateful pour. Reporter now gauffs name etched in history along with her role model, serena williams. Serena retired a year ago and to carry this trophy means a lot to me. Shes my idol. To have my name on this trophy with hers is a dream ive always dreamed and believed in. Reporter five years in the pros, gauff has six singles title including this major open win, proving she is a power play executing with precision and poison her way to the top. Now as she mentioned, she has been coming to this tournament for years. This video surfaced from 11 years ago with fans commenting about her saying that she was always a star, and now theres proof of that. We should mention, willie, the u. S. Will wrap up this afternoon with the mens final, Daniil Medvedev and Novak Djokovic playing, and that will be a wrap for the u. S. Open this year. That video of coco watching the u. S. Open as a child and now winning it, not so much time has passed since then. She has a very bright future. Aaron gilchrist at the u. S. Open, thanks so much. President biden was among those congratulating coco on saturday. He called the new u. S. Open champ and her parents after that win. The president is on an overseas trip wrapping up the g20 summit in india and arriving in vietnam a short time ago. Nbcs senior White House Correspondent Kelly Odonnell is traveling with the president. Shes in the capital city of hanoi. Kelly, whats the latest there . Reporter good morning, willie. The president is now in hanoi, and this is his first visit here while president with some big expectations that the u. S. And vietnam, led by the communist party, will take steps to formally go closer in this relationship in a way that u. S. Officials said is really an arc of the 50 years since our two nations were at war. Now before he left india, the president and other world leaders, honored a man of peace visiting the memorial site and that was part of the g20 summit. U. S. Officials did not give specifics about the direct conversations he had with other leaders there, because that summit did not have the typical oneonone meetings. But we know and we were able to see the president shook hands with the crown prince of saudi arabia known as mbs, despite past criticism and his concerns about the kingdoms human rights abuses. While he is here in vietnam, the president will also pay a visit to a memorial site that marks the place where the late senator john mccain was captured during the war and held prisoner back all those years ago during the vietnam era. Willie . Of course, one of bidens friends from the senate days as well. Kelly odonnell in hanoi this morning, thanks so much. Chuck todd is nbcs political director and moderator of meet the press. Chuck, good morning. It is great to see you, my friend. A big morning for you and an appropriately big interview, an exclusive with california governor gavin newsom, a man who could be a future president ial candidate, but some democrats whispering he should be one this time around perhaps instead of president biden. Lets hear what he told you about that. I think we need to move past this notion that hes not going to run. President biden is going to run and looking forward to getting reelected. Theres been so much wal owing in the last few months and disrespect, but wearing gearing up for the campaign. We look forward to it. You hear these calls privately. What do you tell the donors who are wallowing . Time to move on. Lets go. Chuck, what was your takeaway from that conversation with governor newsom, who some believe has a future beyond this party. You shouldnt read an interview in a transcript. You have to see how they answer a question, watch it. Look, my impression, he is sort of hes determined to show that hes behind the president. That doesnt mean he doesnt want to run, that doesnt mean he wouldnt be running, but, you know, he doesnt sit here and pretend hes not interested in it. Hes simply saying, hey, were rallying around him. I think hes, frankly, sees that hes running. Theres no path to the presidency in challenging a sitting president. But this is a person preparing to run for president. Its just most likely hes running in 2028. He admitted to me hes been reading Ronald Reagan biographies that go back to when he was governor of california. The only governor the last governor of california to become president is reagan. How do you sell california to the country . We had that conversation, too. Thats a tricky thing. Hes trying to learn how reagan did it, and that tells you a lot. I think the reality is here, which is, as far as we all know, biden is running for reelection. Hes in the bullpen, theres no doubt about it. Waiting his turn. There were some polls that showed some weakness for president biden, perhaps amping up calls for others to take a look at it at least. Chuck, it was a big morning and it really is. After almost a decade in the seat where youre sitting right now as the moderator of meet the press, today is the final show for you at meet the press. We thought since you have your sunday mornings off going forward, wed give you something to curl up with, maybe you could watch a little sunday today with your official sunday today mug. I appreciate it. Maybe celebrate the miami win you stayed up late to watch last night. I might get to go to one of these games now. Like thats willie, you and i are a couple of guys who work weekends, right . Thats it. And a lot of people work weekends. Its nice to get your weekend back. We all dream of it. I took the miami victory as a sign, ive turned the page. The last time they were good was before i was on meet the press. I take that as a sign. Lets go. Playoff or bust, go canes. A big win. You started in september of 2014. My goodness, the decade that followed and what you have guided your audience through. A tip of the cap to you. Congratulations on a great run. Cheers. Stay up late and watch those games, my friend. Congrats. Willie, youve been a friend, a pal behind the camera not just in front of it. Thank you, sir. Thank you, chuck. Well look for much more on chucks final edition of meet the press when, as we mentioned, chuck sits down with california governor gavin newsom. Breaking news overnight.
