Candidate doing her best to rally conservatives this weekend. And parachute versus plane. A collision between a skydiver and small plane caught on camera. Each shot detailing that midair tangle. Well tell you how everyone is doing today sunday, march 9th, 2014. And welcome to today on this sunday morning. Im erica hill. And im lester holt. We want to get to our top story. Its been more than 36 hours since that Malaysia Airline disappeared and the search operation to find it is getting larger. Here are the latest developments for you. Philip wood was identified as one of the people on board. During an overnight press conference, malaysian Officials Say they are now looking into the possibility the jet tried to turn around to head back to kuala lumpur airport. The United States is sending multiple forces to the region to help out if needed. Malaysian officials are also in talks with the fbi. Our team is in place to cover it all. We want to begin with tom costello with the latest on the investigation into where the plane may be and what could have gone wrong. Good morning. Reporter a military radar indicates the plane may have attempted to turn back before disappearing, but there was no distress call early saturday morning. Now this Massive International search including ships and planes from the u. S. Sunrise on the waters south of vietnam brought an allout search for the malaysian plane. Two large fuel slicks in vietnamese waters. But where is the wreckage . Our search now has been extended to even wider areas. Because there is a possibility youre looking at the possibility of an aircraft air turnback. Reporter the plane left kuala lumpur. Among the passengers american philip wood from texas. But one to two hours into the flight at 35,000 feet, air Traffic Controllers suddenly lost contact with the plane. In 2014, modern jetliners rarely just disappear. That the plane simply disappears indicates some catastrophic event which prevented the flight crew from sending out any kind of distress call. Reporter also of concern to investigators, two europeans who were listed as passengers, austrian and an italian were never on the plane. Both reported their passports stolen in thailand in the past to years. So who boarded and what were their intentions . You obviously want to know who were these people traveling on these false papers. Did that have an involvement, howd they get on the plane . Reporter the plane is among the worlds most reliable. A boeing 777 200 series. In 2007 this very plane lost the tip of a wing after clipping another wing on the ground in shanghai. But that damage was repaired. Last summers crash in San Francisco was the first fatal accident involving a boeing 777 since its induction in the 1990s. And that was a result of pilot error. Today the search continue bs. Ntsb is out to assist in the investigation. Authorities are looking at closed Circuit Television images of the individuals who used the false passports. And there may be two more passengers with suspicious identities. That would bring to four the total. The malaysians are now consulting with the fbi. The possible explanations for this missing plain include a total engine and electrical system shutdown, a catastrophic failure of the fuselage, extreme turbulence, or even terrorism. We have no idea right now. Thanks. Michael leiter is an nbc analyst. Good morning. Good morning. You said the detail of stoling passports energize. Tell us what you mean by that. When this crash first occurred, it was something suspicious. Planes dont normally disappear at 35,000 feet. Without anything more, intelligence officials basically stand back and let the civilian investigators look at this. As soon as you know you have people who are on that plane using false identities, passports stolen, that immediately got people saying we need to understand who they were, why they were on the plane, and what links they had. As tom said, they know something suspicious is going on. They dont know what it was. In this region its common to have stolen passports especially in thailand. People do travel for reasons other than terrorism on false passports. Thats what theyre trying to find out. But it still begs the question, how in this day and age could the security, the technology we have at airports, how was anybody able to board a flight with a passport that was reported stolen . It certainly is troublesome and varies from country to country. Entering the United States with a stolen passport, that would almost certainly be picked up by the department of homeland security. But that requires a fairly sophisticated electronic linking of these passports with stolen records held by the International Police organization interpol. In this case my current understanding is only one of those passports was reported stolen. Hence the malaysians may not have known that one or both were stolen. And it is possible that the airline didnt have all that information. So at this point, if youre looking at this as one of the investigators, wheres the investigation go now . What are you looking at . Really four things. Obviously the forensic information from the crash would be critical. Second, continuing to look at all the people they know were on the plane. Third and really the most critical right now, identifying who those false passport travelers were. And thats hard. They used closed Circuit Television to try to identify them, but that will be tough. Last but not least, looking at all these franchise the past several weeks was there anything that indicates there was some terrorism or criminal to bring them down. Thank you for your time. Family members of the people on board that plane are dealing with anguish this morning. Many of them understandably overcome with the pain of not knowing exactly what happened to their loved ones. We are learning more this morning about some of the victims. We begin in beijing this morning. Good morning. Eunice, good morning. Reporter good morning, erica. Around 100 relatives have signed a petition demanding that Malaysia Airline give them more frequent updates. People here are very, very frustrated. They say every minute, every second that goes by, they lose hope. Every person here in this room fears someone they care about is gone. This is Malaysia Airlines makeshift Crisis Center in china. At a Beijing Hotel where families and friends of flight 370 were told to find the latest news. The last time i heard from my son, he called before the flight to say hed be home around 9 00 a. M. This man came here from a nearby village to get word of his son. Traveling with those close to him. Over in texas the brother of another passenger said american philip wood was working as an executive in malaysia. He had just visited the family last week. Just shocked. You know . This kind of thing doesnt happen. He was my hero, my friend. And we were very close. So its tough. Tough times. Reporter for relatives here, the tough times are sometimes too much to bear. My grandparents were on the plane, and theyre nearly 80 years old, she says. We dont have much hope. A grief shareholder here in china and halfway around the world. Though our hearts are hurting, we know so many families around the world are affected just as much as us by this tertragedy. Reporter Malaysia Airlines says that it plans to bring more staffers and volunteers here to assist on the ground. The airline says it is preparing to fly relatives out to kuala lumpur as soon as possible and eventually take them to the location of the aircraft. Thank you. Lets turn to politics now and the future of the Republican Party. The threeday cpac wrapped up with sarah palin who got the crowd going with her ted cruz inspired version of green eggs and ham. I do not like this, uncle sam. I do not like his health care scam. I do not like this kind of hope, and we wont take it. Nope, nope, nope. David gregory is moderator of meet the press. Good morning. Good morning. We could expect the president to be mocked at this conference, but what are the other headlines here that appears to be a Deeper Division within the Republican Party, how real is it . Well, i think its significant. You have an establishment of the Republican Party that has been trying over the past year to reassert itself. I think Chris Christie is part of that, paul ryans party of that. Jeb bush were he to enter the fray would be part of that. But sarah palin is more of a grassroots activist, very entertaining, certainly to inspire the base of the young people at the gathering here at cpac in washington. You have a Tea Party Wing thats here to stay and is really trying to set up for becoming head of the party. Thats what theyre trying to resolve right now. After the last election, there was a lot of licking of the wounds and hand wringing. Has there been any movement on that to find a message before the next election . Well, you still are trying to redefine conservatism within the party. Right now were in a Midterm Election year. Everyone is going to hammer president obama specifically on health care. Because thats what a lot of republicans want to run on. And theyre also running hard on the establishment of the Republican Party. Trying to defund obamacare. Thats a goal and not compromising at all. I think theyre getting a little bit closer, but theyre going to have to test some of these measures and personalities. Chris christie still represents the wing of the party that says we cant make these changes if we dont win. And winning seems to be the problem at the moment. Thats what theyve got to resolve. Thanks very much. We will check in with you in a bit for a preview of meet the press. Want to get you caught up on other top stories. Jenna has those for us this morning. Hi, everyone.
