Now, as we go to the radar continually and looking at the radar. Now the heavy storms moved out of the rockies into the central plains. In fact, we expect to see three to four inches of rain in the midwest. Locally three to four inches with flash flooding. Now we are also looking at strong storms. We have this big hurricane out into the pacific. Hurricane marie. 1,300 miles off the southern tip of baja. It is moving westnorthwest. It is also causing problems up and down the west coast. Miguel almaguer is in malibu. What could be great waves for surfers could be dangerous for the beachgoer. Reporter these properties used to be 100 feet or so away from the beach today. Today the water is in their living rooms. A half dozen already have water damaging from the rising tides. This is just the beginning. They are expecting another high surf to roll in in the coming hours. Overnight, Southern California beaches took a pounding. The largest projected surf in years smashing to shore. 10 to 15 foot waves expected through friday. What could be historic swells. Just because were predicting 15foot waves doesnt mean we cant see a larger wave, say 20 feet. And some of those bigger waves can get underneath the piers and under houses. Reporter with some local beaches already shut down to the public, this morning maria churning into the pacific. Once a category 5 hurricane, sister storm was generating 160mileperhour winds. Shes weakened but is still packing a powerful punch. During a High Surf Advisory in malibu tuesday, a surfers body was pulled from the water. His death under investigation. Its not just damaging surf. The rip currents are dangerous too. Lifeguards say it can be deadly. Rip currents, side currents, uneven bottom. Reporter for the last 24 hours, Southern California has been bracing for this blast. Massive berms stretch along some of the areas most iconic beaches. Erosion and flooding a major concern. This morning in many spots, the public warned stay out of the water as an incoming threat now washes ashore. With inland temperatures expected to soar into the triple digits, lifeguards here are concerned many people will flood to the beaches. Conditions here will be dangerous. We expect to see high tide at about 10 a. M. Local time. Al . Miguel almaguer, thanks so much. Heres what we can expect as we look along the coast. We are looking at these high tides and dangerous surf. Wave heights four to seven feet. Flooding is possible. We move up the coast. You will see santa monica, 10 to 15 feet. And santa barbara, 6 to 10 feet with coastal flooding possible. And here in the east, cristobal. It is going to cause dangerous rip currents and surf from miami all the way up to cope cod. An instructor was trying to teach a young girl how to use an automatic weapon, an oozy. But the kickback was too much to handle. She ended up losing control and killing her instructor. You have to keep that held in. Otherwise, the gun wont fire. Okay . This chilling video captures the last seconds before the 39yearold was accidentally shot and killed by a 9yearold girl. The young student successfully fires the machine gun, an oozy, while it is set to single shot mode. But when he sets it to fully automatic, the student cant control the recoil and he is struck in the head by at least one multiple rounds fired. He was airlifted to a Las Vegas Area hospital where he was pronounced dead. The incident occurred monday at the bullets and burgers shooting range in white hills, arizona. The ranges website lists minimum age as 8 years. And all minors 8 to 17 must be accompanied by an adult at all times. The girl involved was with her parents at the time of the shooting. Okay. The university of Southern California cornerback and Team Captain Josh shaw made headlines with news he jumped from a second story balcony to save his young nephew from drowning in a pool. Shaw tells the school he landed on concrete and seriously injuring both ankles before crawling into the pool and pulling the 7yearold boy to safety. No surprise for him who addressed his class earlier this year. I am more nervous today. Reporter shaw now sidelined can two high and the sprains told the paper i would do it again for whatever kid it was. Did it not have to be my nephew. Steve sarkisian said that was a heroic act by josh putting his personal safety aside. The next day when it came time for shaw to speak to the media, the hero was a no show and usc opened an investigation. Within the last few hours or so weve gotten a few phone calls contradicting what josh said occurred saturday night. Were going to continue to vet it. Reporter the Fire Department reports it did not receive a call saturday night about shaw or his nephew. The Los Angeles Police department, however, did file a report that night that does mention shaw. A burglary investigation at the orsinia apartments. Some 60 miles from the reported rescue. Witnesses report hearing screaming coming from the apartment where shaws girlfriend lives. And they report seeing a man who looks like shaw scaling down the apartment balconies before running away. Police are investigating but have not named shaw a suspect. Josh is adamant with what occurred. Reporter the football hero now forced to play a different kind of defense. Shaw is not listed as a suspect, but sources close to the investigation tell nbc news, detectives want to talk to him. We have reached out to mr. Shaw for comment with no response. Matt. These two bits of plastic that can be inserted in the seat in front of you on the plane and it causes that seat to remain rigidly upright. The use of one of these on a flight recently set off a fight between two passengers. Call it the mile high snub. When a passenger on united flight 1462 could not recline because the man seated behind her had blocked the seat with a device known as the knee defender. A midair argument ensued. This Youtube Video shows how the knee defender attached to the legs of the tray table blocking any movement from the passenger in front of you. The upset passenger threw her glass of water at the man behind her causing such a ruckus the pilot diverted to the nearest airport where they were both removed from the flight by chicago law enforcement. So what do you think . Is it confrontational to mechanically block the seat in front of you from reclining . As you can see now, theres very little room for me to work. I think its invading my right to fly and be comfortable. Whats the name of the device . Id love to get one. Reporter on todays packed planes where there could be zero inches between a reclined seat and passengers knees, frequent fliers say a fight like this was perhaps inevitable. The faa says preventing someone from reclining their seat is not illegal, but most airlines have a policy that says stopping the passenger from leaning back is unacceptable. United airlines where the inflight fight took place says it does not allow customers to use devices that prevent seats from reclining. There are some seats on the plane where it reclines. The one in front of you doesnt and theres lots of leg room. The only problem, its in the exit row. On most airlines today, that costs extra. Its very uncomfortable. Its so narrow. You wake up every day thinking maybe it was just a nightmare. And then its your reality. Reporter this is the roadside memorial where the boys were pushing the family truck on the side of the road when they were hit and killed by a drunken jose banda in 2012. Prosecutors allege as the children lay dying in the street, barajas ran to his nearby home, returned with a gun and exacted his revenge, shooting the 20yearold in the head while he was still in the drivers seat. No weapon was ever found. Investigators told jurors they found a holster ammunition in barajas home. He denies owning a gun and the ammunition wasnt a match from the bullet fragment in the car. Thats enough. We showed you the setup there. The young girl was firing an uzi. When he set it to fully automatic, she could not control the recoil. Again, she was 9 years old. Vacca was air lifted to the hospital after being shot in the head and was pronounced dead. It happened at the bullets and burgers shooting range in arizona. Eight years old was the minimum. And all must be accompanied by an adult at all times. The girl was with her parents a t the time of the shooting. The local sheriff says no charges will be filed. Reading through and talking to some of the experts on gun safety here, they say for a girl that age, 9 years old, to be holding alone a fully automatic uzi is not a safe thing to be doing. Even accompanied by a trained instructor. Yeah. A welltrained instructor. It makes you look. And our hearts and thoughts and prayers go out to this girl and the instructor mr. Vacca and his family. But for those of us with children, we put them in the hands of these folks weather its a swim instructor, a firing range instructor, all these things. You dont know really at the end of the day who these people are. But with this, so far theres been no indication that this particular instructor so far did anything wrong. Swimming though, yes, accidents can happen. For me the surprise was that a 9yearold and at this range they allow kids as young as 8 to go in and handle such a powerful weapon. I shot a smith wesson. We were doing a story in texas on the conceal handgun law. I was with an instructor, big guy. So im standing with the gun and that gun kicked back so hard, my shoulders shook. And that was my first time firing a weapon. Obviously this was her first time with this uzi. Shes a small kid. Thats the surprise and question there that a child that young would be allowed even with a trained instructor who apparently had a great record, a clean record of being an instructor safety. That that i was just stunned. Thats not a gun debate issue or gun ownership. I was just thinking you wouldnt let a kid drive a nascar. And thats you can go somewhere and say were letting 8yearolds drive around the track at 120 miles an hour. Thats just a question. One gun safety expert said its not unusual for a kid to go to an instrushoot the weapon. But the instructor would usually have a hand on them. But that recoil just in that particular as al said our thoughts and prayers are with the child, her family, this man, his family. Its eye opening. May need to rethink the regulations. Terrible story. And what you want to do is try and really create a fun activity at night for them to use that will get them excited about going to bed at night. Because obviously its a big battle.
