Yes, scary night as our top story and entire town north of chicago was devastated by a massive tornado that damage still being calculated this were mooing as the threat of more Severe Weather moves east. Kevin tibbles is on the scene in fairdale, illinois. Good morning to you. Reporter savannah, it was a night of horrifying heavy weather across the midwest. But it was illinois that bore the brunt of the tornados. Here in fairdale, every single structure has been hit by the storm and one person is dead. Stormchasers captured the unbelievable footage as it knock owed ver a semi. Hes over. Go, go reporter the tornado leaving a huge swath of destruction touching down in rochelle, illinois, about 75 miles west of chicago. It was huge and coming right for us. Reporter 12 people took cover in the basement of the grub steakers restaurant. Trapped there for 90 minutes until rescue workers could get them out. Im in shock. Ive got no job, no farm. I was blown away by the sheer terror of everything. Reporter the roof of the restaurant was blown off, a semi parked nearby toppled over. Remarkably, everyone trapped made it out with only minor injuries. Ive been on the Department Almost 35 years now and weve never had anything come through like this. Reporter several homes were flattened and power lines down, as the tornado tore through the region. My gosh. Oh, my god. Reporter hard hit the Tiny Community of fairdale, illinois where at least one death is being reported. Some 50 structures were leveled. One witness saying it was like a bomb went off. I would say probably 95 of the town is gone. Reporter First Responders working through the night in a methodical search and rescue operation, as they begin to assess the damage. And rescue crews from several counties have been brought in to start the search going door to door today, they are even flying overhead looking for people who are still missing and unaccounted for. There is only a Volunteer Fire Department in this town. This is a close knit community. Obviously today they are grieving. Back to you. Kevin tibbles, thank you very much. You warned us yesterday about Severe Weather in that part of the country and more today perhaps . More today on the east coast but not as severe as yesterday. Yesterday we had tornado watches issued pretty early on. Here we go, its 5 00 local time thursday. This is the line of storms, right in through here when those super cells developed and we ended up seeing several reports of tornados, you saw those funnel clouds. And these continued to move to the north of chicago. We had reports of about 11 tornados in illinois because of this storm system. So we are going to see this continue to move eastward. Now we have a severe thunderstorm watch in effect from parts of West Virginia down into eastern tennessee. This is until about 10 00 eastern time this morning. And as it moves to the east were going to see the threat of showers and storms increase along the east coast. However, today were not looking at widespread tornados. Instead, more hail and damaging wind gusts and also frequent cloudtoground lightning. If you hear the thunder you want to get inside. Then it gets better. We are now seeing the moments that led up to the Deadly Police shooting in South Carolina of walter scott. For the first time the family of the officer charged with murdering him is speaking out. State investigators are saying they were suspicious of the shooting from the very beginning. This morning dramatic dash cam video showing the traffic stop last saturday moments before he shot walter scott. The officer asked scott for his license, registration and insurance card. I dont have the registration. He just bought the car from his neighbor. No registration in there and no insurance. He walked back to his car and then about 30 seconds later scott bolts from the car. The next time we see scott he is running from the officer and fires eight times, killing him. In a written statement, the head of the state agency investigating the shooting said we believed early on there was something not right. The cell phone video confirmed our initial suspicion. The officers mother did she hasnt watched it and doesnt know if she ever will, but she is apologizing to the scott family. I want them to know im sorry this happened. And remembering better times, her son growing up in new jersey and when he graduated high school and began his career in the coast guard. Hes not a bad person. Hes a good person. Two families torn apart. I will miss his phone calls. He called his mom every day. I know their family is grieving. Our family is grieving. I would hate for this to happen to anybody. Erin sharp said she has not seen her son since the incident. He has not entered a plea. Why did scott run from the car. We dont know for sure. A 13yearold boy is dead and 8yearold boy remains in grave condition after the the car they were in plunged into a harbor. Two adults were able to escape and swim to the surface.
