White rock canyon road area. The red cross is assisting. The fire started just before 3 00 and grew rapidly. And cal fire spokeswoman emily smith is on the telephone with us. Can you hear us . Yes, i can. Thanks for coming on. Its dan and alma. The incident is near the community of upper lake in lake county, just north of lake fork. The fire started this afternoon around 3 00 p. M. And is currently 20 contained. Burning in a northeast direction from elk Mountain Road which is state responsibility, and on to the Mendocino National forest which is the United States forest service. How populated is this area . There are some evacuations going on right now. The area is a small community. It does have a population. 20 residents were on the White Rock Canyon road that were displaced and moved to the upper lake park, where red cross is assisting. However, there are no mandatory evacuations in order. All right. Thanks very much. I know it will be a long night. You cant fight from the air during the evening hours. I guess first thing tomorrow morning theyll be back up in the air, correct . Correct. We currently have 253 ground personnel with various agencies and various areas of california that will be getting to the incident this evening. And with sunup tomorrow, aircraft will be in the air. Tonights conditions as far as weather, mostly clear with temperatures 50 to 55 degrees, 80 humidity with light winds. All right. Emily, thank you so much for checking int and giving us the latest on the fire. Emily talked about the conditions but for more specifics, meteorologist drew tuma is tracking the weather. Dan, right now its rather humid. But its still breezy in the area. Current temps right now at 54 degrees. But the relative humidity is high as 70 , although there is a wind out of the northnorthwest at 9. But it is gusting to 14 Miles Per Hour at this time. So in terms of the wind, what firefighters can expect over the next 24 hours, the winds will begin to die off early tomorrow morning. Thats pretty typical. But once that sun comes up in the afternoon tomorrow, the winds will pick up anywhere from 15 to say 17 Miles Per Hour once again out of the north and northwest. Well have the forecast in just a few minutes. Alma . In oakland tonight, police are searching for a gunman after a homicide on 23rd street and Martin Luther king jr. Way right next to interstate 980. As you can see, officers closed off nearby streets. Bay Area News Group is reporting the gunman was a passenger in a sedan that drove off after the shooting. So far, no information on the victim. A man is in Critical Condition tonight in an Oakland Hospital after bart police say he shot himself during a struggle with police on a train platform. It is part of a growing trend this year of violence between police and suspects in oakland. Abc 7 News Reporter Laura Anthony is on the story. Reporter tuesday night, two bart Police Officers wrestled with an armed man on a train platform, and the man shot himself. The officers tased him but never drew their guns. This is not an officer involved shooting. This is a critical incident. This is just the latest violent encounter between police and suspects in oakland. In 2013, there were 21 assaults on Oakland Polices, 15 last year, and this year so far 26, an increase of 63 . Its a very difficult time in this country to be a police officer. Reporter last month, an oakland officer was shot in the chest by a Sexual Assault suspect. Last week, a female officer was beaten by a man with a bike chain. In both cases, the suspects were shot and killed by police. There is concern out there. Reporter former San Francisco police chief tony ro bert is the director of the International Institute of criminal justice at the university of San Francisco. I really think that weve come to the point where we have to look at it in an objective way in terms of what the police can do and what the community can do to make our relationship better and to deescalate the violence. Reporter barts deputy chief says that the choice to use force is never made lightly. It does cloud your judgment. No one wants to be that officer being accused of doing things they didnt do. Reporter assaults on police are up in oakland. And so are officerinvolved shootings. There were none in 2014. But six so far this year. Four of them fatal. In oakland, Laura Anthony, abc 7 news. Firefighters found a body inside a shed that caught fire behind a house this afternoon. Sky 7 hd was over the home. Firefighters put out the flames quickly but found the body when they went into the shed afterward. No word yet on whether the person died from the fire or before it broke out. A man accused in a vallejo kidnapping last march initially thought to be a hoax could get off to a technicality. The cell phone left at the crime scene has become a crucial piece of evidence in the case, but it may have to be thrown out of court. Abc 7 News Reporter Melanie Woodrow explains why. Reporter the man who lives in this dublin home with his wife and daughter testified that the robber woke him up with a flashlight. Then said, your daughter is okay. Listen to what i say. He said the robber tried to tie him up, but he fought back. The robber, he says, hit his head with a flashlight, causing this cut, all while he says his wife ran to the bathroom to call 911. The victim says robber left the home when he yelled for his wife to get the gun, even though they didnt have him. Matthew muller was identify by his cell phone left behind. Without a search warrant, detectives bypassed the locked cell phone by calling 911. They then got the phones number and that the phone was registered to matthew mullers parents, evidence that mullers attorney wants thrown out. If youre going to search something without a warrant, you have to make that search clean. Reporter if a judge believes that they had an urgent need to get the phones number without a search warrant, the evidence could be considered. Dublin Police Services they say stand by their actions. Not nervous. Im confident. Reporter the judges decision in two weeks could have implications on this case and a possible federal case as well. The cell phone led detectives to muller as a suspect in a march vallejo kidnapping. Vallejo Police Called that Home Invasion kidnapping a hoax. Months later, Police Found Evidence linking muller to that crime at his southlake tahoe home. Matthew muller has not been charged in the federal case yet. A new tragedy in yosemite tonight. A man reporting missing three weeks ago has been found dead. He went for what was supposed to be a day hike to Upper Yosemite Falls on august 11 but never returned. His car was spotted over the weekend. A search crew found the body yesterday. No cause of death was given. Police have arrested an 18yearold utah man for vandalizing the all wars memorial at oakville park in danville. The memorial was defaced with black and red spray paint in june. It was dedicated in honor of all men and women who have served our country. Police say some tips and other information led them to this guy. Police also used this surveillance image in the investigation. Felony vandalism charges were filed against jared vance of provo, utah. With school back in session, more people are back on the roadways, and some drivers are resorting to drastic measures just to shave some time off their commutes. Nowadays, it appears more people are using these types of dolls to find their way into a fast lane. A quick check of ebay shows these dolls are selling r hundreds of dollars. Its frustrating to see people flying by in the carpool lane without another person in the car, without a sticker. Just doing it because they think they are not going to get caught. Reporter the california Highway Patrol says they are on to the violators. Most times we have our officers in perfect locations in position to be able to take the enforcement action to be out there and at least be a deterrent so that people are aware we are paying attention to it. Reporter and they say its more than just about the carpool lane. Once you start having to rush and break the rules and try to cheat using carpool lanes, other things come into effect, such as speed. Reporter many motorists hope the cheaters out there will just cut the nonsense. A carpool violation ticket starts at nearly 250. Im not going to do it. Its not worth the risk. Tonight, the hundreds of calls police have already 32 years after the aids virus was first discovered, a new study by kaiser permanenty shows that we may finally have an actual hiv vaccine. More than 600 patients have been on the drug truvada about three years now, and none has tested positive for hiv. It is remarkable. Heres abc 7 News Reporter. This medication can be used to prevent hiv. It works. Reporter dr. Jonathan vulk put Kaiser Permanente patients for risk at hiv like paul on a daily regimen of the drug truvada, proved in Clinical Trials to protect a vast majority of people from hiv infection. Its wonderful to have less worry about hiv. Its something thats always lurking in the back of ones mind. Reporter but instead of protecting most people, kaiser researchers found the drug has been 100 effective. Their patients have been taking it since the drug was approved in 2012. Their findings appear online in the clinical Infectious Diseases advance access. E now have over 600 patients using this medication, and no new hiv infections. Reporter patients are tested every three months for hiv and monitored for any possible side effects. Those include gay and bisexual men as well as heterosexuals and injection drug users. Whats really exciting about hiv prevention in 2015 is that we have options. We have several tools that we can use. Reporter this Study Suggests that hiv is very close to being managed like any other chronic disease such as diabetes or asthma. In San Francisco, abc 7 news. A groundbreaking was held today for a new hotel in smoema county. Its part of a 170 million expansion at the casino. But theres controversy over the expansion. Heres wayne friedman. One, two, three. Reporter in roener park today, they brought out the shovels and mixed in the optimism more employment for the county, more opportunity. Reporter and for what still remains a glitzy 175 Million Hotel next to their already existing and very popular casino. Just ask these ladies. Its almost like a vegas. Really . Casino. Reporter can you have fun here . Oh, god, lots. Reporter the hotel will bring more than 1,000 local construction jobs and 150 permanent ones. Thats good news around here. But not for everyone. We have more crime here than petaluma or santa rosa. Reporter chip worthington blames the casino. He has spent 15 years of his life fighting the complex and losing mostly. Before the casino came to town, it was a sleepy little city. Eporter according to records from the Sonoma County sheriffs office, deputies have reported 641 crimes on site since the casino opened in november of 2013. They have responded to 2,699 calls. Thats bringing showers to portions of oregon and washington but also a cooler air mass that will slowly dip to the south for thursday and into friday. Thats when it will feel like fall around here as we end the work and school week and even into saturday morning i wouldnt be surprised if napa and sonoma counties dip into the 50s and 40s. Saturday, a warming trend again. Look at the nice numbers. 70s and 80s. Not hot just yet. The heat will start to pick up on sunday, especially inland. Even for labor day itself on monday, it is warm out there. Its going to be lots of sunshine. Temperatures from the upper 70s into the upper 90s. There could be some triple digits by monday afternoon.
