We have developing news in oakland where fire investigators ask looking for the cause of 3 suspicious fires in the oakland hills. 2 of the fires started this afternoon about half mile apart near Diamond Canyon park off highway tlaechbility while crew were putting those 2 out, another smaller fire started just up the hill. Firefighters have them all out in less than an hour though it took some work running hoses 300 pet down to the canyon there are as you can see. The fire burned more than 5 acres in total. Investigators consider them suspicious because the wind was only blowing 5 miles an hour and while that was Strong Enough to blow some embers and start 2 other spot fires its unlikely the wind could have carried them half mile away. Half mile apart from each other odd in nature so we have notified o pd to be pleased to help us patrol the area. Nobody hurt and no structure were damaged. Firefighters in newark made quick work of brush fire along the Railroad Track as you can see from sky 7 hd was not far from home. Sailed through the assembly and today the bill that would set guide lanes for the testing of rape kits passed Senate PublicSafety Committee on 5o vote. Alameda County District attorney sponsored the measure after the iteam found thousands of untested rape kit and police storage room around the bay area. With all of the evidence across america of those communities that have undertaken testing the backlog we are all discovering the tremendous value there is in our ability to solve the crimes and to bring justice for those victims. Omalley points to new york city where the arrest rate jumped from 40 to 70 after clearing the backlog of untested rape kit. But the california state sheriffs Sheriffs Association opposes the measure partly because of the expense of dna test. We still have concerns, though, that the bill creates an expectation that every single kit will be tested and every single case and we just dont think that its necessar necessary. In response to the opposition the bill Author Assembly member nancy skin frer berkeley amended the measure. Law enforcement would have had 5 days to submit a rape kit to a crime lab skinner changed that to 10. Also doubled the number of days that lab would have to up load dna profile to the National Database to 60. The law would not go into effect until january 1st 2016. We want and expect rape kits to be examined. The information to be up road loaded and this kind of crime to be treated with the seriousness that it deserves. Reporter so far the bill has not received a single opposing vote. Sheriffs have excellent relationship with the governor. Reporter sought Sheriffs Association is eyeing a final show down with governor brown. If this bill makes its way through the senate an gets to the governor desen we have to sit down as association and decide whether or not we are going to ask the governor to veto the bill or if we live with the consequences of the bill. The Sheriffs Association has been a strong supporter of the governor. We find out how much pull they wind up having. Federal marshalls are reviewing security measures at oakland Federal Building after a bullet was found inside the courthouse. The bullet hit a window and passed through u. S. District judge chamber and came to restn the jury room. Marshall believe the bullet may connected to shooting in the area on friday. Nobody inside the building targeted. Bullet was found saturday. U. S. Marshall wont comment on reports the courthouse window are not bullet proof. Marin county investigators say 2 women who died in the same area of mount tamalpiais within days of each other died accidentally. The women if were both found dead on the mountain in april. The coroner says one fell off the trail hit her head then the other died of hypothermia. 2 death generated speculation about a possible serial killer. Its not true apparently. Investigators say they found no connection between the 2 women and have been no deaths on the mountain since and again no signs of foul play in any way. Alan . The fir started around 7 15 at the foot of the hill behind me and quickly raced up and wrapped around some of these homes. So it turned to 3 alarm fire very quickly. It was threatening about 40 homes on this hillside. But about 65 firefighters surrounded it from the bottom and the top and were able to put it out. What helped firefighters say was the fact that if you could see the homes up there have a brick wall voungd them thats pretty much where the fire started thats where firefighters were also standing with fair hoses to douse it out.
