What began as a gentle shower turned into a downpour in vacaville this afternoon. And if the climate models are right, well see a lot more of this before the season is over. Its all beginning tonight. A robust cold front will finally plunge south into the bay area, mostly after midnight tonight. Rain will begin in the north bay, spreading from north to south overnight. Within 24 hours, totals will range from a tenth to half an inch of rain and gusty northwesterlies behind the front will blow up to 30 miles an hour. And the rain will turn to snow in the sierra. Thats why winter storm warnings are up for a foot of snow above 7000 feet. That means it could be slow going if youre headed that way tonight and tomorrow morning. The rains already falling in the sierra, turning into snow in the morning. Lamar abrams is in Placer County tonight. Reporter taking a loot the skies, this system will be nasty. And brian will have more on our forecast in a minute. In the east bay tonight, the only teen to survive a crash that killed two of her friends tells investigators she fell asleep at the wheel. The car slammed into a tree this morning near highway 4 and Franklin Cannon road in martinez. Maria medina has more. Reporter investigators are not confirming the identities of the victims, but friends and family are. They are gathered at this church tonight to remember them. They didnt stand a chance. Reporter these are the first pictures were seeing of one of the victims. A Family Member identified her as marlena heinz, one of two martinez teens killed in this mornings crash. The way the car struck the tree, it really was a severe impact to the passengers side of the vehicle. Reporter investigators say the teen driver told them she fell asleep at the wheel as she rounded this bend on Franklin Canyon road around 3 00 this morning. The last thing she remembers was being at 60 miles per hour. Reporter friends of the girls visited the crash site hours later, paying their respects and identifying the other teen as lauren smith. I texted her last night, telling her to come to this hangout around 12 00. That was a few hours before it happened. Reporter vincent la grosso says the deaths are a shock to everyone who knew the girls. Lauren was just nice, you know, really considerate. Reporter and the driver, the sole survivor, is still in the hospital tonight. Investigators say she survived because of her air bag and her seat belt. Live in pleasant hill, kpix 5. Rioting erupted near cal campus overnight after a big halloween street party got out of control. Mark kelly has the aftermath. Halloween night along berkeleys frat row, and the partying spilled into the streets. Some of them are climbing on cars, some dressed in costumes, kind of riling people up. Reporter in fact, this morning we found one of those cars, a lexus took quite a beating. Some aspects of a riot, definitely. Reporter around 12 30 this morning, Police Arrived after a fight, a gun and people carrying knives. Of course, berkeleys no stranger to riots, but police say this was different. This is a unique one in the fact that it was not in a commercial district. It was in a residential area. And it was largely it was students, party goers. Reporter ask students and they say the party in the streets started off innocent enough. They blamed the outoftowners for taking their halloween celebration hostage. Honestly, lot of the people werent even cal students. They were kids from oakland and stuff who had no affiliation with the school. Theres a lot of people. I dont think all were students either. Police shut down several halloween frat parties late last night pretty much at the same time. That might be why so many revelers ended up on the streets at once. Tonight, were learning a fire that left a danville home in ruins may have been deliberately set. Witnesses told police they saw someone throw an object at the house on west linda mesa avenue just before it erupted in flames. That person then took off in a car. The house was vacant and no one was hurt, but the fire caused an estimated 210,000 in damage. So far, no arrests. A Wind Power Company blamed for thousands of bird deaths in the altamonte pass is shutting down. Altamonte wind stopped running its older generation turbines today. The company is one of four operating some 3000 of them in the pass. Environmentalists blame the older models for killing up to 4600 birds over the years. The older turbines are much more dangerous than the newer turbines because of the way they are situated on the landscape. First of all, you have 828 turbines all spinning blades simultaneously across the landscape. Its really a shame for wildlife. The shutdown came as a surprise to environmentalists. Altamonte wind recently got an extension from the county to operate until 2018. The company says reducing bird deaths was the primary reason for its decision to shut down those turbines. What began with two men will evolve into two 50 billion companies tomorrow. Hewlettpackard decided last year to split into two Smaller Companies to become more competitive. Hp, inc. Will sell personal computers and printers, while Hewlett Packard enterprise will focus on commercial business. Starting tomorrow, each will trade separately on the new york stock exchange. By dividing hp into roughly equal halves, each spinoff should produce more than 50 billion in sales next year, according to analysts. Open enrollment begins today for cover california. Its a chance for americans to sign up again for federal Health Insurance under the Affordable Care act. People did just that today at a health fair in San Francisco. More than 20 agents were on hand to help people get the coverage they need. The plan calls for a light rail boarding platform and calls for the creation of two parking lots on port of San Francisco property. The warriors hope to break ground as early as next year. San francisco voters will also decide this week whether to approve the giants big expansion plans. By 6 00 tomorrow morning, the brunt of the front will be south to monterey peninsula through morgan hill and out toward the anderson reservoir. For us, well begin to clear it out just in time for the morning commute, but there will be slick streets. Then we go showery the rest of the day and we get a peek of sun toward sunset tomorrow night. So in a way, its a convenient system because the heaviest rain falls overnight. But thats not true for the mountains. Snow in the sierra will get there tomorrow morning.
