Here we go again, you know. We knew this would happen again. It was just a question of when and where. Reporter tonight bay area environmentalists are watching very closely because there are trains carrying the same highly flammable fracked oil that was on those trains through richmond on their way to martinez. The blood is on the hands of the Rail Companies because their rails are unsafe. Reporter andre soto is the richmond organizer for communities for a better environment. He says not only are the rails unsafe, the cars are, too. Theyre running this stuff, this explosive bakken crude in train cars designed to carry high fructose corn syrup. Reporter soto points to what happened in the Feather River canyon back in november. This train derailed on the same tracks where trains transport 1 million gallons of bakken a week. Luckily this 1 was full of corn rather than crude. Were not prepared today. Reporter after that accident state senator jerry hill wrote Governor Brown this letter urging him to halt the transport of crude oil by rail through our most treacherous passes in california. Months later hes still waiting for an answer. Im concerned that the railroads are not doing enough. Im concerned that the Oil Companies are not taking it as seriously as he should. Reporter hill authored a bill that would collect money to train First Responders to fight the catastrophic fire if a crude derailment like this one happened here. This really brings home the fact that were not ready. Reporter the Oil Companies and railroads claim in their defense accidents like the one in West Virginia today are extremely rare. They say they are taking precautions by slowing trains down as they go through canyons and other dangerous areas, but senator hill says that is not nearly enough. Christin ayers, kpix5. Tonight the fire in West Virginia is still burning. As we mentioned earlier, the plan is to let it burn itself out. Its been going for hours now. 14 of the 100 cars carrying crude exploded into flames. Big explosions, part of the derailed train slammed into a house setting it on fire. Tonight were hearing from a man who says his coworker saved his life protecting him from a hail of gunfire. Betty yu is in East San Jose tonight. Reporter that gunfire ended up killing his coworker. He was shot to death a few feet behind me where you see that memorial tonight. All day people have been stopping by to bring flowers, candles, food, even chocolate. It was his favorite thing to eat. A balloon release brightened the sky in san jose tonight in honor of a man who just hours before he was killed was laughing and joking around with his coworkers at the start of his shift. Reporter the San Jose Police department did take Surveillance Video from that liquor store that was robbed. They have not released it to the public. They also havent put out a description of those suspects. However, they are interviewing witnesses, several of them out here tonight when that night rather when those gun shots rang out. Just after 8 00 the two suspects walked into the pizza place and robbed the employee before shooting him. We dont know how badly he was hurt. Hes in the hospital now. Take a live look outside.
