Activists seeking to hold Police Accountable for a deadly shooting tried to disrupt a Super Bowl Party in San Francisco. Last night about 40 members of the justice for Mario Woods Coalition stood outside city hall. They held pictures of the man who was killed by police in december. Many of them demanded that San Francisco police chief greg suhr be fired. The criticism of chief suhr and his department comes amid a growing National Debate about the use of force. Some officers groups say changes now being proposed could put officers and Public Safety at risk. Kpix 5s jackie ward joins us at Police Headquarters in San Francisco where the chief says he is trying to get out in front of the issues. Good morning reporter good morning. Its a debate that every Major City Police department is involved in. San francisco is at the forefront of that conversation. Chief suhr says that every time a Deadly Police shooting happens here or at any other place in the country, everyone involved is scarred from it. So as a result to all of these shootings happening a washington based Research Group is now proposed Higher Standards for police when using force that would go beyond whats currently required by law. But groups representing Police Chiefs and rankandfile sworn officers say those proposed standards would add confusion and hesitation to tense situations. The situations like on december 2 when multiple officers killed mario woods who was holding a knife and ever since that day, chief suhr has been pushing for more less lethal options for his officers like tasers. In a oneonone interview with kpix 5, chief suhr says he is working to rewrite the rules for his department in what he calls a radical way that includes reevaluating the so called 21 split rule. There have been a lot of conversations about how quickly a person with an edged weapon can cover a distance before an officer can react. Is the 21foot rule really the safest for everybody, one size fits all . I would say no. Reporter changes dont happen overnight but chief suhr started the process. Crisis intervention training is now mandatory. Range training is up to 8 hours focusing on deescalation options. Now the mere pointing your weapon is a reporting use of force.
