There was no evidence of a fire alarm or Fire SuppressionSystem Installed in the oakland warehouse. Christin ayers has details. Reporter liz, we are discovering from city officials who were out defending response to their complaints that this warehouse today talking to them earlier on they claimed they had been here on multiple occasions but when pressed about what they found inside the warehouse, they dropped this bombshell. In terms of the planning and building inspector, our records didnt show an inspector was inside the building in the last 30 years. Reporter today federal officials were right here on scene combing the scene for any clues as new information is emerging about how this all started. Reviewing the scene here, its sobering. Reporter a team of federal fire investigators and engineers combed the scene of the ghost ship for ignition point. They found a glimpse into the final moments of the 36 victims. It is excruciating to walk through and possibly relive the last moments when persons knew there was a fire and there was no way out. Reporter authorities confirmed that there were no fire alarms at the warehouse. And although there were two internal stairwells on either end of the event space, neither led to an exit. Folks traveled up the stairwell trapping the occupants on the second floor, smoke traveled up the stairwell. The fire was well developed by the time they knew a fire was going on downstairs. Reporter today fire investigators are trying to determine whether a refrigerator at the warehouse sparked the fire but thats unknown. The property had been plagued by complaints and problems. In 2014 there were complaints of illegal construction and material blocking the sidewalks and in 2005, a complaint that a parking lot was being used as a homeless encampment. The owner of the warehouse also had 18 other complaints over a vacant lot he owns nearby. In november 2016 the city sent a notice to the owner about an interior illegal structure and garbage on the property. Police have been called to the warehouse in the past. Mayor schaaf says she wants any responders to report trouble when they see it. To immediately clarify the responsibility of City Employees to properly report any observations of dangerous Living Conditions or illegal events along with a clear process for doing so. Reporter mayor schaaf is also announcing a plan to start a new task force. She is talking about flying in experts to explore new procedures for handling buildings and event say. Liz . Christin, how long will it take atf investigators to sort through that evidence they collect . Reporter atf says they will be on scene for several days looking at the scene, talking to witnesses. They say it could take them weeks to analyze all that data. Wow. All right, christin. Thank you. Authorities have released the names of more of the fire victims. One of the new faces emerging 29yearold ara jo. She worked at an art and supply store in berkeley. Ara also helped organize the east bay alternative book fest. 23yearold Griffin Madden had graduated from cal last year. He loved to make music and dance according to his roommate. He was one of three ucberkeley students killed in the fire. So far, 35 of the 36 victims have been identified. Most of them were in their 20s and 30s and many of the victims were passionate about music and art. Some of them were performing the night of the fire. Another victim was a student at San Francisco state university. The youngest we have mentioned was the son of an Alameda County sheriffs deputy. There are also reports that some of the victims died hugging each other. My friend died. I can tell you whatever i want. I sympathize with that. This showdown between artists and an oakland business other than. The angry words came after a Restaurant Owner at Jack London Square went public with her concerns about an artist warehouse right across the street from her business. Kpix 5 reporter emily turner on what happened next. Emily . Reporter yeah. Basically, it was a big showdown. The warehouse that youre talking about is right over my shoulder. You can see it on the second floor. Its the big White Building with most of those windows blocked out. What happens inside, artists dont want us inside. They want to keep it that way. Yall are on the witch hunt, okay . You need to cool the [ censored ] okay . We are still grieving our friends. Our friends arent even in the ground yet reporter it started with a press conference to show support for the Artist Community and call the citys attention for the need for artist and low Income Housing in oakland. Something out of this tragedy needs to happen. Reporter instead it ended in discord between a restaurateur and Community Leader hoping to help and her nextdoor neighbors living in an artist collective down the block called the salt lick. Every, single artist involved thinks that this is wrong and they are calling you snitches and saying this is a witch hunt. Well, guess what. Id rather be a snitch and save lives than be quiet as a mouth. Reporter dorothy king owns a barbecue store and says its its responsible to help artists and to make collectives like the ghost ship safe. Also to stop the potentially unsafe parties that are happening there. I can come here on a friday or saturday night and theres people lined up all the way around the block. I always know that its not licensed. Reporter her neighbors saw the presser as an invasion into their mourning and an unnecessary spotlight on their community that they say is already under siege. So they interrupted with an ire all her own. Observers and journalists have called the wrong response to this tragedy an example of what will only margin alize of people who gravitate to spaces like ghost ship because of economic and cultural pressures. Reporter a lot of artists are very angry by the coverage and by what happened. They say they feel like whats created by the coverage of this fire is a witch hunt. We have more about that coming up at 6 00. Emily, back to say. Do we know if the salt lick is up to fire standards at all . reporter we dont. But we did ask the city for that information. And we have not heard back. However, in that press conference this morning that was interrupted by the artists who live or work there, they did say there are more than one exit. That there are multiple ways in and out of the building. Im going to hop out of the way and you can see one of those exits up there on the second floor which is a fire escape. A family vigil is planned for a couple who died in the fair alex vega and Michela Gregory will be remembered in san bruno. Two online crowdfunding campaigns have raised more than a Million Dollars for the victims and their families. She says she is disappointed with the failure but is not giving up on the issues that she is passionate about. Yes, you build on success but you learn from failure. Senator boxer started her political career as a member of the marin county board of supervisors. She said she is excited to return to the bay area. House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi did attend boxers farewell but boxers colleague in the Senate Dianne Feinstein was conspicuously absent. Boxer and feinstein in this battle over a water bill. The bay area man is among the five last living survivors who were on the uss arizona when the bombs hit. Today, 95yearold lou conter marked the harrowing anniversary in oahu. He also brought the ashes of another arizona survivor clarendon kettrick who died this year at age 92. In other bay area news, Petaluma Police found 32year old Lucas Coleman at the sebastopol area by family members this afternoon. He had been missing since monday. Officials investigating a fire at this abandoned home in san jose are calling it suspicious. It broke out this afternoon on sunol and west san carlos streets. Witnesses tell authorities a man started the fire one day after squatters living inside the home were kicked out by police. In san mateo some residents will have to figure out a new way to get rid of their hazardous waste. Waste management had a doorto door Household WasteDisposal Program for items like paint and cleaning products. But the south bay sideways Management Authority board rejected the new contract because prices went up. The service ends december 31. Receipts come in handy if you want to return something. But now an Environmental Watchdog Group is warning those slips of paper could pose a health risk. Consumerwatch reporter julie watts explains. Reporter its a common question for holiday shoppers, would you like a paper or email receipt . Email receipt. Im a Little Old School of. I prefer paper. Both. Reporter now an Environmental Watchdog Group is urging customers to opt for ereceipts and limit their contact with the paper variety. Most Cash Register receipts are coated with a toxic chemical. Reporter the center for Environmental Health was a team that tested more than 100 receipts from california stores. They found a handful of resets including those issued by high end retailers Nieman Marcus and nordstroms contained bpa a chemical known to cause reproductive toxicity. It has kind of an extraordinary ability to mess with our hormones. Reporter equally concerning . She says 90 of the other receipts tested contained a concerning replacement chemical called bps. Its the chemical cousin of bpa and is probably, you know, not so well studied but equally toxic. Reporter both chemicals are found in what are known as thermal receipts. The bta and bps develop the dyes used in printing. The Chemical Industry says bpa is safe and says overall consumer exposure is low. Nordstrom and niemans did not comment but most of the other retailers found with bpa say they are looking at alternatives. If you dont need a receipt, say no, thank you. Reporter the chemicals are also found in gas pump and atm receipts and boarding passes. The biggest concern, pregnant women and cashiers. She says ereceipts are the way to go. And californias office of Environmental Health hazard assessment agrees saying people should minimize contact with thermal receipts. But what about gift receipts and other necessities during the Holiday Season and beyond . Well, cox says consider folding them and handling receipts from the back and washing your hands.
