Kpix 5s kiet do is at the scene where crews are working on that sinkhole right now. Kiet. Reporter good morning. That sinkhole grew dramatically overnight about 6 times its original size. Its now roughly 20 by 40 feet and then 12 feet deep. As it widened out the asphalt started sagging and that then crushed the nearby water main and filled the sinkhole with water. The water main has since been shut off. The water is pumped out. They think the sinkhole is stabilized and now crews are digging around it excavating the hole to begin repairs and try to figure out what caused the road to collapse in the first place. Check out the photos taken over the span of a couple of hours starting yesterday around lunchtime. It shows alvarado boulevard literally sagging right in the middle of the intersection at new haven street. By Late Afternoon it grew to about 10 by 12 feet wide three feet deep and kept on growing. For work crews its bun thing after the next. Heavy asphalt collapsed on our main. You know . It split the water main at the joint. So now we are trying just to wait like i said for the excavator, should be here in an hour and a half or so, and do more excavating, we assess the damage and perhaps put in a new pipe and weld the steel. So it will be a while. Well be out here most of the day. Reporter it is causing major traffic headaches in the area which includes a lot of businesses and homes. Also, alvarado middle school, the Community Center and a fire station. Traffic is shut down on westbound alvarado boulevard at fair ranch road. Right now about 10 homes have little to no water pressure. The city has brought in some bottled water to help them. The crews will be here into the night. Live in union city, kiet do, kpix 5. We have had two accidents, one at a street southbound 880 thats cleared to the right shoulder. The other is northbound near stevenson still stuck in lanes so a little sluggish on 880 through the nimitz this morning. Bay bridge metering lights are on. We are seeing some delays now at least to the maze. Our approaches to the bay bridge also slow off that eastshore freeway commute. Carquinez bridge a 24minute ride. What happens a sinkhole is you have some sort of fluid whether you see water, sewer, storm, that erodes soil. Then all of a sudden you will have the soil leave that space void and then it collapses upon the weight. We are trying to figure out what happened. What we do know we didnt have water when it collapsed. It wasnt a water main break at the time. Candlelight vigil last night in san jose at the spot where three teens were killed in a street racing crash. There was a steady flow of family and friends of the victims throughout the day on wednesday. Some prayed, others cried. This is the aftermath of the crash. Police say the teens were street racing late tuesday night on east santa clara street in a stolen car. They lost control, slammed into a lamppost and a tree. One of the killed was 18year old oscar gonzalez. Those who knew him are in disbelief. When we heard it was a stolen car we couldnt understand why, you know, what happened or who who is at fault or anything. Its just, you know, probably teenagers being kids. I dont know. I mean, he is like i said, hes a good kid. Also killed in the crash 15 yearold girl, and a boy from gilroy. A surviving passenger is hospitalized in critical condition. Police say the other car sped off. A student is under arrest for taking part in an armed altercation at city college of San Francisco. On tuesday, 21yearold randy taylor, jr. , and an accomplice allegedly tried to kidnap a student outside the main library on campus. Police say the accomplice, who is still at large, lifted his shirt revealing a gun. The suspect beat the victim before he got away. No shots were fired. Nobody expected this while shopping the busy target store in san joses westgate mall. [ sounds of sexual relations ] an explicit audio recording blared over the p. A. System yesterday. One shopper recorded it on his cell phone [ continuing sexual sounds in the background of this news report ] it took a turn. Thought it may have been halloween related. Netflix has a hey bar to meet and that was the case has a high bar to meet and that was the case for 3rd quarter earnings not meeting expectations even though revenue is up 20 from a year earlier. Its u. S. Subscriber growth was weaker than expected although its overseas growth was stronger and overseas is the key for netflix. It entered into asia for the first time last month into japan as plans for taiwan, hong kong and singapore early next year, the keys though will be china and india. Those countries are further down the horizon. Netflix stock has more than double since the beginning of the year so investors taking a little back this morning as netflix shares are falling by about 6 in the early going. Some key economic reports out continue to get good news on the job market. Labor reports first time unemployment claims fell by 7,000 to 255,000. Thats back to a more than 40 year low. Inflation continues to give the fed a little cover. The consumer side price index on inflation was down in september for the month before. [ music ] reporter some people who are new to the neighborhood have complained its too loud. Today the church got slapped with this cease and desist order from the oakland city administrators office. Kind of hard to believe because we been here about 65 years in the community and all of a sudden we get some concerns about the noise. Reporter the letter threatens hefty fines, a 3,500 knew san fees and 500 per day if the noise doesnt stop which the church cant afford. Freedom of religion ought to be respected. Reporter tonight the oakland creative Neighborhood Coalition brought together artists and churchgoers to talk about solutions in the problem. A lot of the African American art and music has its roots in the black church. Reporter Coalition Leaders say they are working with Oakland City Council president Lynette Gibson mcelhaney to protect Oakland Churches. We already had some discussions with councilmembers. A little premature to say where thats going to go. Reporter see this naacp also stand reporter the naacp also standing with Pleasant Grove criticizing the handling of the issue. There should have been a discussion with the community and the people saying the church is making too much noise. Reporter its unclear when legislation may be drafted. For its part of the church says it will go ahead with choir practice tomorrow and in all likelihood, the neighborhood will hear it. Christin ayers, kpix 5. The naacp is working on getting copies of the complaint before moving ahead with any further action. Seems to me they should be able to work that out. Lets hope they do. All right. Westbound 4 at somersville reports of an accident, as well. Its not in lanes. Its over to the right shoulder. Busy as you come away from 160. Brake lights into pittsburg. Give yourself some extra time. 18 minutes on your drive time. 880 both directions, northbound near the coliseum starting to slow down just a bit. Southbound we have seen delays out of oakland into hayward. And you see some flashing lights here on our san mateo bridge camera. Thats because we have a broken down vehicle off to the right side and you can see they are working on clearing it out of the way but again, traffic is really backed up as a result. 32 minutes now 880 to 101 as you drive out of hayward to foster city. A stall at the san mateo bridge near the highrise. And eastshore freeway commute slowandgo as you head towards the bay bridge. Metering lights are on. Julie, hows the weather . We have a mixed bag today. Unsettled is the story for most of the morning. Take a look at this beautiful shot of the bay bridge and you can see partly to mostly cloudy skies. This really is indicative of the unsettled weather we have been seeing this morning. What a gorgeous view though to start off your day. And you can anticipate cloud cover i like to throughout the day. We might get some peeks of sunshine. This is hidef doppler a 12 hour loop so its happened over the last 12 hours. You can see a lot of activity to our south. A lot of thunderstorms, as well. In the bay area this morning we have seen a few scattered showers here, as well. Right now, though, a few showers over the Santa Cruz Mountains heading to the east. So not a rainout. But depending on where you are today you may see a shower or two. Heres a look at the satellite perspective to explain whats going on here. Subtropical moisture in place is why its going to feel muggy today and we have this area of low pressure off the Southern California shore bringing showers our way. We could see scattered showers today, not likely a lot. This system is going to push northeast. As it does more showers could spark up. Humid for those of us who dont see showers. Cloud cover today. Tomorrow, drying out as we await this approaching front. That moves through this weekend and as it does it brings with it another chance of showers mainly for the north bay on saturday. In fact, futurecast can time it out today. Again, a couple of more scattered showers possible today. But we dry out friday. And then moving on into saturday, notice as i pause it here, we start to see showers primarily in the north bay. We cant rule out a few showers here farther to the south. And then shortlived though it dries out when we move on into sunday and more sunshine in store for early next week. In the meantime, today temperatures do stay mild topping out in the low to mid 80s. 80 san jose. 66 pacifica. 76 oakland. 83 in fairfield today. But keep in mind, muggy so it will feel a little sticky out there not quite as comfortable as those temperatures may make you think. Now, unsettled today, tomorrow we dry out. A chance of showers on saturday. Mainly for the north bay. High pressure builds back in late this weekend early next week. And then sunshine and above average temperatures return. Back to you guys. Thank you. A happy ending this morning for louie the pit bull puppy who went missing from San Francisco animal control. Someone stole the twomonthold puppy from his enclosure last week. A Good Samaritan returned him tuesday night and claimed they got him from someone on the street. He is in pretty good shape. He has a stomach ache and a cold. But we think he should be just fine and ready to go to a new home in a few days. Its unusual for someone to break into an enclosure at the shelter. Workers are now reviewing security procedures. Looks like a louie. You think so. Maybe a little. He is cute. It may not be the best thing since sliced bread but some people hope caffeinated Peanut Butter will be the next big thing. People all over california will take part in the annual great shakeout this morning. At 10 15, millions of participants in schools and government buildings will drop, cover and hold on. Im anne makovec live in San Francisco where a new proposal for gun control will be unveiled this morning by Lieutenant Governor gavin newsom. Its something we could see on the ballot next year. Here are some of the provisions. It would create new rules on selling ammunition including licensing and background checks. It would ban the possession of magazines with more than 10 rounds and require anybody who has them now to get rid of them. It would also crackdown on people who own guns illegally because of a criminal record. Now, this measure would require about 366,000 signatures to qualify for the ballot. California already has some of the toughest gun control rules in the country as the debate continues on a national scale. Now, another provision which is particularly of interest here in the bay area is one that would require anybody who had their guns stolen to report that to police.
