Developing right now in berkeley, crews are on the scene of a large garage fire. The scene is near arch and spruce streets. It started around 5 a. M. At one point, neighbors in the area were being told to evacuate. They are now being allowed to return home. But the Fire Department is asking home owners to keep their windows closed because of smoke. This year is the 40th running of the San Francisco marathon but due to recent terror attacks, organizers are stepping up security. Reporter Katie Nielsen reports from the Golden Gate Bridge. Reporter 27,000 people are actually expected to take part in the marathon running across the Golden Gate Bridge as part of that event. In past years, runners took up two northbound lanes on the bridge with one lane as a buffer, then traffic still had one lane to head north. There have been several recent terror attacks where drivers plowed into large groups of people like this one at the london bridge. That has Golden Gate Bridge authorities taking note. I think it was time to take pause, revisit the safety factors and do this in a safer manner. Reporter this years organizers decided to close the bridge on sunday morning to all northbound traffic. That means from 6 a. M. To 9 a. M. On sunday, no one will be able to drive from San Francisco to marin unless they head across the Richmond San Rafael bridge and then cross over from the east bay. Dozens of fire crews from across the state are on the front lines of the massive Detwiler Fire burning near yosemite. The fire expands across that shaded area in Mariposa County. Kpix 5s anne makovec has the latest. Reporter at last count this fire destroyed 50 homes and 49 other smaller buildings. It is only 10 contained this morning. The latest destruction is near mariposa. The fire started on sunday and then blew up over the last few days. It has burned about 109 square miles. That area littered with dead trees killed by bark beetles and, of course, years of drought and that makes it prime fire fuel. This fire started about 2 miles east of lake mcclure. Flames jumped the merced river and several retardant lines and roads. It is still threatening about 1500 homes and other buildings. Nearly 5,000 people have been evacuated. Yosemite National Park snow still open. We came yesterday and we were at first disappointed because we had been looking forward to the great views and were afraid this smoke would take all the views. That declaration will mobilize the California National guard to help with disaster relief. A teenager is behind bars for allegedly starting the stagecoach fire. It led to evacuation orders for an auburn neighborhood. Police say the boy was smoking marijuana when the grass fire started. The boy reported the fire. He is cooperating with the arson investigators according to authorities. Cal fire was able to contain the fire which left a massive 12acre burn scar in the canyon. This morning, Pittsburg Police are on the hunt for a gunman. Larry kneel, jr. , is wanted in connection with to a deadly shooting. They say he knew the victim. The shooting was wednesday afternoon at baskinrobbins on century boulevard. A 43yearold Bethel Island resident was killed. He hasnt been identified yet. And now their dream is one step closer to reality thanks in part to the Trump Administration. So at 10 a. M. Here, at the caltrain station in millbrae, those state lawmakers and local leaders will come together to break ground on the electrification project. That includes governor brown, House Minority leader nancy pelosi and San Francisco mayor ed lee. This follows a big push to get funding for the project. It cost 2 billion to convert caltrain from diesel equipment to High Performance electric trains. And 650 million comes from the Trump Administration. But it wasnt always clear the money would come through. The president s transportation secretary initially pumped the brakes on the project after getting pushback from California Republicans. After five months, though, the transportation secretary approved the money to modernize the system. Theres only so long you can put a bandaid on a situation before you have to fix the problem. But definitely, better for our passengers, better for the environment, better overall for the region. Reporter supporters of the project say electrification would increase ridership, ease Traffic Congestion and create 9600 jobs. Not to mention, it will be good for the environment, as well.
