Outside the memorial hundreds of Law Enforcement officers stood in silence giving their final salute to their fallen comrades. [ taps ] nearly all of santa cruz paused today to honor the fallen officers, as well. Many who couldnt make it to san jose gathered to watch a live broadcast at Kaiser Permanente arena. In fact, that was the original site for the memorial before planners realized it was simply too small. While most area Law Enforcement officers were in san jose, others put their own grief aside to protect a community in mourning. Kpix 5s len ramirez on the ones who stayed behind. Len. Reporter well, ever since the two officers were gunned down, the santa cruz Law Enforcement community has seen tremendous support both from other allied agencies and the community as a whole. And that continued again today. But while the officers were away honoring the fallen officers, the criminal element apparently came forward to take advantage. Just minutes after most of the regions Law Enforcement officers drove to san jose for services for the two murdered santa cruz officers tellers were pretty shaken up. Reporter three armed men robbed a bank of the west branch in nearby capitola. I couldnt believe that someone was taking advantage of today. Reporter witnesses told police the robbers pointed handguns, shoved employees and escaped with an undisclosed amount of cash. Detective sergeant booth said he didnt think the timing was just a coincidence. People know that were, you know, that a lot of the officers are going to be over there honoring the fallen officers and its really disappointing actually, its disgusting to me. Reporter several capitola officers were at the services, but even with minimum staffing levels, sergeant booth said he had enough officers to investigate the robbery and cover the rest of the city. Next door, in santa cruz, almost all of the officers were at the funeral. Officers from salinas, the Monterey County sheriffs office, and cal berkeley pd patroled the city and answered calls. Santa cruz firehouses were backfilled by engines from neighboring cities like scotts valley. Anything that the local and outside agencies can do to lessen the impact felt by the agency thats been affected is an honorable thing for any of us to do. Reporter but with thousands of santa cruz people at the services or watching live tv feeds like this one at the del mar theater, the atmosphere in the city was subdued. Feels heavier. It feels just sad. Its just sad. Reporter and so as santa cruz comes back together tonight, theres an investigation to move forward in capitola. Capitola police are looking for the three suspects. So far they have not made any arrests. Elizabeth . Len, do you get the sense that santa cruz is ready to get back to business as usual . Reporter i really do. Just a few minutes ago, we saw a couple of fire engines from santa cruz coming back to their city to be back on their posts and after a week, more than a week now, of, you know, honoring the fallen officers an giving them their due respects, i think there is a sense that people here on the streets want to see their officers back in place and they do want santa cruz to get back to normal. This has been a very difficult situation for the past week here in santa cruz. Thank you, len. 51yearold Sergeant Butch baker is survived by his wife kelly, his daughters jillian and ashley and his son adam. In fact, adam joined the Santa Cruz Police force in 2010. In the mailroom. Butchs mailbox right next to his sons. Friends and coworkers say butch loved his family so much, the proof was in that big smile of his. He was born september 16, 1961. Grew up in saratoga attended high school at bellarmine prep in san jose. Sergeant baker is a 28year veteran of the Santa Cruz Police department who had actually talked about retiring soon. The department promoted him to sergeant in 1997. Friends and colleagues remember him as a remarkable teacher, investigator and prankster and somebody who wore shorts regardless of the weather. 38yearold detective Elizabeth Butler is survived by her mother louise, grandmother, sister, longtime partner peter wu and their two sons, joaquin and stillan. She was born on march 16, 1974 in boulder, colorado. She attended Bishop Montgomery high school in torrence and uc santa cruz. She graduated in 1996. Detective butler is a 10year veteran of the department. Her colleagues say she excelled at interviewing both suspects and victims. And her impressive testimony in court. Many people in santa cruz know butler and her family through their music and preschool classes and their former ceramics business. Click on news, look for coverage on the shootings. Developing news out of south san jose where a grief stricken family discovered a missing relative stabbed to death in his apartment. Police were called to the Hilltop Manor senior complex on ironwood drive shortly before noon today. The stabbing victim has been identified as stanley jacobson, who was reported missing on february 18. A suspect is under arrest but police have not released any information about that suspect or motive at this time. We have a crew heading to the scene right now and well have more on this story as it develops. In other headlines, the passenger in a car was shot this afternoon in San Franciscos financial district. It happened in front of an Apartment Building at 38 bryant street which is just off the embarcadero. The driver took off looking for help. Eventually winding up on market. Well, from there, the wounded man was taken to San Francisco general hospital. No word on his condition tonight. A highspeed chase on highway 101 ends with the arrest of three burglary suspects. The men were spotted in san mateo and chased south into sar carlos and belmont. It ended on rinconada circle where there was a crash. No shots were fired. But san mateo and redwood city, you are currently dry. All of the rain courtesy of that upper level low pressure area keeping most of the rain offshore. But its make its closest pass right now so we are going to see the showers increase as they move inland this evening. It will be a wet morning commute in the south bay tomorrow, but after that High Pressure builds back in so enjoy the rain while we have it because we do have it tonight. Jobs are staying unfilled for a longer time than a few years ago. In 2009, jobs remained vacant for an average of 15 business days. Now, they stay unfilled for an average of 23 days. Got a new fight brewing in berkeley. Its over a proposed highrise for downtown. The 18story building would be located on herald way just one block below shattuck avenue. Critics say it would change the character of their city. Kpix 5 reporter da lin says the project is just one part of a planned building boom. Da. Reporter well, allen, developers went beyond this building behind me here to build a luxury apartment complex. Now, it would be the first high rise here in berkeley in about 50 years. And some longtime residents say thats going to change the character of the quiet town here. This is how it looks right now standing from the corner of herald way and kit rich avenue. Its an empty blank wall with an opening of garbage. Reporter Developers Want to change it into Something Like this. Retail spaces on the first floor and apartments on the next 17 floors. Well help bring, you know, more People Living into downtown and ultimately bring, you know, more activities, better retailers and create a more vibrant downtown area. Reporter its a bold idea for Downtown Berkeley at 180 feet high, the tallest. The last time a building of similar heights got built was in the 60s. I hope it doesnt happen. Reporter some residents not happy. Great big thing sticking over hanging over everything, very unpleasant idea. I think it would change the character of berkeley, which im against. It would be less of a problem obviously at 60 feet shorter. 180 feet is a lot. Reporter many berkeley city officials support the project. Voters two years ago asked for new development in downtown bypassing measure r. Critics people who dont want to see change. If you dont change you die. Reporter a handful of similar highrises is in the pipeline creating about 1,000 apartments in berkeley. You will see an amazing transformation of Downtown Berkeley into a really truly transitoriented community. Right here at the corner Reporter Developers say this building would be the greenest in berkeley and its less than a block away from a bart station. And the building would have about 350 rental units. 10 of that would be affordable housing. The rest would go for about 2,000 to 4,000 a month. Those Developers Tell me those units would be geared towards empty nesters here in berkeley and those hightech workers in San Francisco. Obviously a long way to go before somebody moves in. Is there a date to start this thing . Reporter if everything goes according to plan, they hope to Start Construction at the end of next year. But tonight, those developers will face the Landmark Preservation commission around 7 00 at a berkeley senior center. A lot of fireworks expected there tonight. Thats exactly what i was thinking of. For many of you it looked like it was going to pour but it hasnt rained yet. But its coming. See that rain just hug the coastline . Thats because the low pressure system is offshore and closesser to it we are seeing most of the rain but now its starting to creep inland. Its raining in the Richmond District but not in chinatown. Not going to just say San Francisco we can go district by district where its raining. Once low pressure moves out, rain is gone, High Pressure moves back in for several Straight Days. I dont see rain for the next week but we have rain tonight before that moves back in bringing back the sunshine as soon as tomorrow afternoon.
