There are at least 7 measles cases here in the bay area. One is tied to disneyland. Christian hartnett reports. Reporter this outbreak has triggered the warning, get vaccinated now. But even if you already are, those vaccinations you got as a kid might not be protecting you like you think. The thing we know is that it does taper off after certain length of time. And your immunity and how well it works with you individually could vary. Reporter that means the shot you received when you were a toddler might not be protecting you like it did before leaving you vulnerable to a measles infection. Five of those infected in the disneyland outbreak were already immunized. But theres a way to find out if you need another dose of the vaccine called a titer test. It determines the levels of the vaccine in your body. If they need another shot we give them a single dose which restores the immunity. Reporter todays vaccine covers measles, mumps and rubella. That started in the 171. Children get two doses which is 95 effective in preventing infection according to the cdc. That started in 1971. Those vaccinated from 1956 to 1971 could be at risk because of a weaker vaccine. If you are a new grandparent, you might want to make sure that youre up to date because you certainly dont want to give it to a young kid. A man who killed his lover and set him on fire is in trouble again accused of setting a new fire. And there may be more. Kpix 5 reporter da lin is live in the castro with the bizarre tale. Da. Reporter yeah, liz. They released that man just a few months ago for that previous murder case. Now david diaz is back in jail. Police arrested diaz here in the castro last night. They say he set a fire to the back side of that second story salon thats called up here salon. Investigators say his current boyfriend diazs current boyfriend actually owns that bar thats on the first floor right below that salon. Right now diaz is not connected to other recent arsons reported in the castro and noe valley. San Francisco Police say he doesnt match the suspect descriptions in the other cases. Last summer he was acquitted of murder but convicted of Involuntary Manslaughter for the death of his sexual partner. His public defender says diaz accidentally killed his partner during a sex game by choking him at a park in 2011. Prosecutors say diaz set the mans body on fire to try to cover it up. The public defender who represented diaz in the murder case will now represent him in the arson case. Im sad and disappointed that he is arrested so soon. He is really he really is a sweet kid who i do to the know over the period of several years while representing him. I find it hard to fathom that he would light a fire in a situation like this, um, i just i i i cant see it. Reporter because diaz was only convicted with one count of Involuntary Manslaughter, he was basically sentenced to time served and released last september. He began his spree at a chase bank on bay street back in october. His most recent heist was last wednesday at the travel x worldwide money on castro. The man is described as 57 to 59, 30s and 40s and very thin. He has been wearing a fake moustache, dark fedora and black trench coat. The bart board is getting an earful tonight over a proposal to punish a group of protestors. Its a packed house right now in oakland. People are sounding off on a plan to force the people arrested in november to pay 70,000 in restitution. 14 protestors were arrested after chaining themselves to a chain at bart the day after thanksgiving. Barts general manager says the group can pay back the 70,000 through community service. A final decision is up to the Alameda County prosecutor. Another guilty plea from one of the men convicted of beating giants fan bryan stow back in 2011. Marvin norwood pleaded guilty to a federal weapons charge. He is now facing ten more years in prison. The charge stems from a search of his home before he was arrested for beating stow. His codefendant is set to plead guilty to the same charge next week. Other bay area headlines. A San Francisco jury says this search of a Residential Hotel room was illegal. Officers didnt have a search warrant when they entered rooms at the henry hotel back in 2010. The searchers were part of a drug investigation s today jurors found an officer guilty on four charges including two civil rights violations. An officer on trial with him was acquitted. A campbell lawyer is accused of bilking homeowners who were trying to save their homes from foreclosure. Wendell jones faces grand theft charges and practicing law with a suspended license. Prosecutors say he would ask people for thousands of dollars up front and thats against the law. On top of that, they say he did little or no work once he got the money chanting College Students were removed from a regents meeting in San Francisco after trying to jump the security barrier. [ chanting ] the students barged into the meeting trying to deliver a letter to uc president Janet Napolitano protesting tuition hikes. Hayes did not want her to do. Two adults engaged in mutual and cooperative drug usage and it went wrong but it was an accident. But we were doing something very few people do, the 45mile perhour speed limit. And just about everybody else was flying by. Reporter the Golden Gate Bridge district just spent 35 million to install a median barrier to eliminate headon collisions. But then human nature kicked in. An observation that we have made is that the speed on the bridge has increased dramatically. Reporter it seems the safer drivers feel the faster they tend to drive. The speed limit is supposed to be 45 Miles Per Hour. But set your Cruise Control to that and the world begins passing you by. So yesterday, the chp began writing tickets. Today, we did some more targeting. Targeted enforcement. And we had a speed of 81 miles an hour in the first within the first hour and a half. Reporter they say highest speeds are coming from people driving right next to the new barrier. And that also means people are moving faster when they reach the 25mileperhour zone at the toll plaza. And they are not slowing down. And we have seen speeds probably almost double what we typically see. Reporter officers say drivers seem oblivious to the speed limits. Its 45 Miles Per Hour and we have you at 66. I didnt realize how fast i was going. But i do feel a sense of security with the barriers there. Reporter the new barrier is supposed to make things safer not faster. And if drivers need a reminder of that, the chp says they will be happy to provide one. Quite honestly anecdotally i was driving over the Golden Gate Bridge every day, people were screaming across that bridge before the barrier went up, too. The Highway Patrol says more than 30 tickets were issued in the first two days of enforcement and they say that officers will stay out there until speeds come down. Close call for stockton police. They were attacked with rocks while trying to break up a sideshow last night. Heres a look at some of the damage to police cars. The sideshow happened in a parking lot while businesses were still open. The officers called for backup and the second car received the same greeting. Police are now going through all the video posted on instagram to look for suspects. A stench in the south bay has neighbors crying foul on a nearby landfill. Milpitas residents say that newbie island is to blame and this winter the smell has been worse than ever. Some say it smells like overcooked compost maybe a product of december rain and january warm weather. People as far away as 10 miles say the stench is unbearable. It is noticeable. Its not healthy. The air quality district has received an unusually high number of complaints about the smell. The Landfill Company says it uses advanced Odor Technology and says the smell is not from its property. January is looking like a bust for helping california to get out of the drought. Reporter why would you buy google Wireless Data Service . You might just because of the name and reputation. I think because google never disappoints me. I trust google. Issuing it for a long time. So i probably would just assume it would be amazing and fast. I have been using it for a long time. Reporter it wouldnt be any more amazing or faster than any other service it will be buying from but it key is it will be cheaper than market rates now. It can do that because its so big and wireless may be just a loss leader. If google can get people online and make google. Com their default, thats money in googles bank account. Hainan airlines is waiting for federal approval to begin five day a week flights to beijing from san jose t plans to start flying in june. Right now the only service to china is from sfo nonstop. For the past 38 years he has been in prison in oregon for attempted murder, assault and robbery. Kpix 5 has corresponded by halbower with halbower by phone and letters for months. This is his written manifesto. In 30 pages sent to kpix 5, Rodney Halbower says he didnt kill anyone. And that he is being set up. The 66yearold has been in communication with kpix 5 since november and told us during a phone call that he is not responsible for the bay area murders. Thats a bunch of crock. In a phone call, halbower admitted to being in the bay area at the time the gypsy hill murders were happening. To that, he said, so what . I did not commit any crime any rapes. Halbower is so far only charged in the rapes and murders of Veronica Cascio and paula baxter but the family of gypsy hill victim Tanya Blackwell are holding out hope for closure in their case. Basically blew us apart. Reporter january 24, 197, John Blackwell last saw his 14 yearold sister tanya alive in the familys pacifica home and the last time his family was normal. Reporter tanyas body was found five months later off gypsy hill road. Her death thus far hasnt been linked via dna to the alleged gypsy hill killer Rodney Halbower. I hate to see my parents what they had to go through. See my dad break down and cry like a baby at the funeral and it was hard. You know . Reporter now, while the dna evidence only ties halbower to two of the murders detectives say the way the other girls were murdered matches. As for the dna the court says the chance it belongs to anyone other than halbower is one in 11 trillion. When we asked halbower about that dna evidence, he said, it was planted. Its an indicator of a harmful algae bloom nicknamed sea sparkle. It comes from farm pollution and can be devastating to marine life and local fisheries. A British Company went to Great Lengths to show its new iphone case that can really stand up to anything. They actually took their case to space. Heres a look at that. They hooked the iphone to a balloon that reached the edge of space. We are talking 100,000 feet into the stratosphere. We are told they did use a parachute to keep the falling iphones from hurting anyone as it plunged back to earth but the case and phone worked after the fall. An Orange County doctor who has delivered more than 10,000 babies has added another milestone to his career. More than 30 years after delivering this couple who later married, the doctor delivered their child. Dr. Barry may delivered kevin and briana fleischmans baby, thats maverick, on tuesday. It was different when you suddenly realized two people that you knew as babies found each other and didnt move and got pregnant and came back to the same place and where i had potential to deliver. So when this happened, i went home and told my wife. And i said, if were in town, day or night, im coming to deliver that baby. [ laughter ] so he did. The couple hopes to have a second child but dr.
