Giving up the cost of housing and displacing a lot of people who have been living here and created an enormous traffic problem. Reporter the city has already warned them not to submit ideas on how to solve chronic transportation and housing problems. We are trying to work with google and the other companies to allow some growth yet provide more housing in the North Bayshore area and build some permanent transportation improvements so well all enjoy the benefits of this growth. But you can be sure starting tomorrow there will be as Massive Public Relations Campaign mounted by them and others as they try to get their ideas across and sell them to the city council. But next month it will take up proposals to put the brakes on office developments. Some shuttle drives who work for apple rallied in cupertino today. They are talking about unionizing. They are upset about the low wages, long working hours and the benefits. 120 drivers for Companies Like apple, yahoo and ebay will vote tomorrow on joining the teamsters. These drivers want better and the Tech Industries can certainly afford to do better. The Teamsters Union tells us it was able to help improve pay and benefits for facebook shuttle drivers after they unionized. Thousands of new homes and over a million square feet of Business Space could be coming to fremont. Its part of the citys vision for the area near the tesla plant. Most agree with that this would be a great place for such a development. After all, thats lots of open land around here right next to what will be a new bart station. But one group says that their demands need to be met. As construction for the warm springs bart station in fremont carries on, empty fields nearby remain untouched but they wont be for long if plans for a new urban Innovation District push forward. Part of that plan includes this section of land where 2200 Housing Units and nearly 1 1 2 million square feet of commercial space will go. Its the largest phase of the city as master plan and its stirring up controversy. This is going to turn into basically a San Francisco and an oakland where people just cannot afford to be there. Reporter allison laster is part of the rise Fremont Coalition also known as residents insisting on social equity. They are asking for more Affordable Housing in the plan among other requests. As of now about 13 of the 2200 units fall under that category. The Coalition Says its not even close to enough. We need to raise the bar. This is a time where residents need leadership, Affordable Housing and jobs and protections. Reporter the coalition met with the developer but so far, there are no changes to the plan. Now, fremonts Planning Commission is set to approve the developers master plan tonight at 7 00. The coalition will be there in an hour to present their concerns. But the Planning Commission is expected to recommend that City Council Approve this megadevelopment. Live in fremont, Christian Hartnett, kpix 5. San mateo could be the latest bay area county to start using rent control. County leaders say the recent tech boom has brought more jobs to the area. The command for housing has skyrocketed. Housing advocates say people already living in the area are having trouble keeping up. We are seeing people displaced being forced out, um, on and ongoing basis. Were also seeing a lot of people trying to absorb massive rent increases, 700,000, 800,000 increases in rent. Right now the board of supervisors is only studying the idea. For their part, Property Owners say its not needed. A california lawmaker is proposing an Affordable Housing fund meant to help the needy to make homeowners and banks pay a new fee on documents used during refinancing and foreclosure and would expand lowincome housing tax credits for real estate developers. Thousands of bart commuters may have been exposed to the measles recently. Elizabeth cook joins us now with a warning from health officials. Kenny, this latest bay area case has been confirmed in san mateo county. And Officials Say that person rode bart when they may have been contagious. The infected person got on at the millbrae station to the Civic Center Last friday. The patient boarded at 4 30 in the afternoon. Health Officials Say the risk of catching measles on bart is low, but they say people need to be aware and watch for symptoms especially if you are not vaccinated. Authorities are working to track down anyone who may have come into contact with this new patient. San mateo county now has four confirmed cases of measles since the outbreak began back in december. Alameda county has the highest number of patients at 6. The total number of bay area cases is 17. This is the second time this month that bart commuters have possibly been exposed to measles. The first time, a Contra Costa County man rode bart for three days before realizing he had the disease. The first lawsuits were filed today on behalf of patients infected with a deadly superbug at an l. A. Hospital, they are suing olympus corporation. They are the folks who make the medical scope that is thought to have spread the bacteria. Families of two patients one who died and one who is still hospitalized cite the company for negligence and fraud. Nine patients were infected at ucla medical center, two of those patients died. Two workers had to be taken to the hospital after a Hydrogen Explosion at a lab in sunnyvale. It happened this afternoon at the altec technologies building in the 200 block of savant way. The two workers were burned in the face. The entire building was evacuated. While hazmat crews were on the scene. No other injuries were reported. Three men suspected of holding a woman hostage are behind bars. It happened at a compound in the north bay. But kpix 5s ryan takeo reports, another woman who lived there says theres more to the story. Reporter the three men voluntarily went to the Sheriffs Office. Thats because they thought they were picking up some of their stuff from a raid that happened at this compound last week. Thats when police blindsided them. They arrested the three men right there. Police accused them of holding a 22yearold woman hostage here at this santa rosa compound. The detectives say one of them jose angel barajasmireles repeatedly raped the woman. Police say the two other men took turns keeping watch but she escaped the complex last week. At first, the woman thought she had been kidnapped at gunpoint and was at the complex for three weeks. Now police wont tell us how she was captured and say she was there since the holidays. They say the story has changed because the woman has had two months of torture. Very likely that she simply, um, did whatever she could to accommodate her circumstance and make sense of it in her own head. Reporter we talked to a woman today who lives here. She is dating one of the accessories arrested. She claims the victim is making the story up because the main suspect did not want a relationship with her. Detectives say the evidence proves the victims story. In santa rosa, ryan takeo, kpix 5. The three suspects are due in Court Tomorrow afternoon. The Sheriffs Office says there could be more charges and more suspects as the investigation continues. A bay area mans fight to protect his home ends up costing him his life. The man was allegedly fighting with a robber in front of his home in hercules yesterday afternoon. Witnesses say the robber choked the man to death. Police say the robber then dragged the body into the garage and took off. He was arrested two blocks away. Police believe the suspect had been casing the neighborhood before that attack. The suspect was seen riding a black bicycle in the area earlier in the day and a bicycle matching that description was found in the bushes just outside of the victims house. Have the kids and family here next door, you know, its shocking and very sad and little bit scared too, you know, because it could be me, you know, next time. The suspect also attacked a homeowners girlfriend. Police found her unconscious in the house. She is in Critical Condition at the hospital. Still ahead, it is not your typical pg e work. They are delivering supplies, tools and workers to the tops of a major bay area electrical transmission line. A really old transmission line. The stuff has been in the air now has been in the air for 50plus years. Wow. So obviously, we have outdone its life expectancy. Reporter the line is huge 27 miles of cable carrying 230 kill volts of energy from oakley to moraga. There are 126 towers often in remote but crowded locations. The advantage of the helicopter for environmental reasons, we can be very much less of an impact to the customers and also the environment. Reporter pg e says without the helicopters, the work would have to be done with a fleet of trucks moving through neighborhoods and across open land. Not anymore. We can do this job in half of the time in the old days. Reporter they are rebuilding small sections at a time. But theres a problem. Were only there for an 11 day stretch and believe after that and going on [ inaudible ] its going to be a noisy eleven days. Reporter noise. This operation will move on down the line in a few more weeks. Pg e says this landing zone will be active for about another month. [ yelling ] pg e hopes to have the entire 27mile project finished by the end of the year. San jose is the only major city without a fire museum. Thats going to change real soon. A donation allowed for the purchase of old fire station 1 today. It will be used to show off a trove of firefighting equipment. Some of the items organizers have accumulated are over 200 years old. Now it just needs a permanent home. San jose deserves to have a fire museum. We have probably one of the top three or four collections in the United States sitting in a warehouse right now. So when we open the doors, well have already an incredible collection to put in it. A lot of history there. Museum organizers still need to raise another 14 million to finish it. The goal is to have it open by 2019. San Francisco Bay could be in for a major transformation. There are bills in the senate and the house that would restore the bay. This includes improving the water quality, creating wetlands and bringing back wildlife habitat. It would also partner with the Environmental Protection agency to help develop a priority list for restoration projects. So many of us are soaking up the sun right now, right . But the drought is still top of mind. A new poll released today says 94 of california voters consider it the states water shortage a serious problem. 68 say the drought is extremely serious. We could see 6 of snow at lake level which would increase the total for the year by 600 . We have had one inch for the entire calendar year. We may see six coming up this weekend. But visitors from Sunset Elementary School in livermore had some ideas. Can be a spaceship. Spaceship. That would be cool. Yes. Maybe its something burning up on the planet. Just might be an alien. It could be a meteorite but that would be big about the size of lake tahoe. Or it could be ice which is something astronomers are always excited to find. It means potentially life friendly habitats. So, you know, potentially, we might find life there. I just look at it and go, the more we learn about that, the more we learn about how reality works and thats going to tell us
