Reporter brian, when we last left the meeting commissioners were going back and forth over transportation alternatives in case the bay area sees another bart strike. We learn that some of barts funding was reallocating to other transportation services. During the strike the ferry saw a 200 increase in riders and ac transit 150 increase. The commissioners and other mtc leaders went back and forth over what plan would be appropriate in case of another strike. One of the main issues is what kind of alternative would satisfy the publics Transportation Needs but at the same time not get the mtc involved in labor politics. There is no replacing that capacity with any standby Transit Service of any kind. We barely have the money to get the buses that are out there running. We all expect disruption. But theres a difference between inconveniencing a commuter by 20 or 30 minutes and stranding people so they simply cannot support the families. But zookeepers say its not a part of their exhibit. A teenaged volunteer found the distressed bat near the otter exhibit and in the process of bringing it to zoo officials, she may have been bitten. The girl has received a series of injections to make sure her immune system is fighting off the virus. You see an injured animal or you think an animal is injured or acting abnormally, the best thing to do is note where it is, stay away from it, dont let it approach you. Doctors are testing a new less Invasive Surgery thats saving patients from strokes. In todays healthwatch, Teresa Garcia visit the first hospital on the west coast to perform the procedure. Reporter 87yearold john eaves is right back to his routine after having surgery to especially a blocked artery. We went in early in the morning on the 28th and then on the about 11 00 on the 29th, wife and daughter picked me up. Reporter ucla researchers tested a new minimally invasive procedure on john to clear plaque from his carotid artery. The artery supplies blood to the brain and can lead to a stroke if its blocked. Researchers say their new technique may be safer and faster because doctors can put a stent directly into the carotid artery in the neck instead of through the leg. We make a small incision above the collarbone enough to give us access and control of about an inch length of the carotid artery. Reporter during the procedure, the blood is being temporarily rerouted away from the brain to protect it from any plaque dislodging and causing blockage and possibly stroke. The redirected blood also passes through a filter. Dr. Wesley moore demonstrated what happens. If that filter fills up with particular material youre basically saving that patient from a potential stroke. We believe so, yes. Reporter doctors recommend the procedure for patients like john, who are older and have especially clogged arteries.
