Good afternoon, im frank mallicoat. Im michelle griego. Right now this is the National Transportation safety Board Hearing in washington, d. C. Federal officials are hoping to get a better idea of what went wrong before the asiana flight crashed. Reporter ntsb investigators say asiana flight 214 was traveling too low add too slow as it approached San Francisco International Airport for landing. An audible alert [ beep beep ] consistent with the low air speed caution was recorded. Reporter 3 seconds later the pilots try to accelerate and aboard the landing but it was abort the landing but it was too late. The plane hit the seawall. The accident left three dead and more than 180 injured. The captain at the controls was still in training on the boeing 777. Reporter the pilot expected a wakeup call alert if the plane was traveling too slow. A retired pilot told investigators the plane is designed that way to always leave the pilot in charge. We apply automation as a tool to aid the pilot not replace the pilot. Reporter the asiana captain told investigators he was very concerned before making the landing in San Francisco because the runways automatic landing system was out of service because of airport construction. A final report and recommendation recommendations will be forthcoming. The pilot was very concerned before landing at this airport because it was his first time and again the automated landing system at the airport was not working. Another issue that came up is the potential for pilot experience. 10,000 hours of flying time somewhere between 30 and 45 hours of flying time on this particular aircraft while another pilot on board had over 3200 hours. So certainly they are definitely looking at that and one of the other questions is whether these pilots rely too much on the automation and not enough on their experience. What about the design of the plane. Reporter one of the questions that comes up is the broader issue on this automation and the design of the cockpit. They are looking at the design potentially at the cockpit and whether it needs to be made easier to read and better alert. So problems cannot be overlooked. A lot of questions there.
