Thousands of federal workers are waiting for the budget battle to end so they can get back to work and get paid, as cbs reporter Susan Mcginnis reports, a meeting between president obama and congressional leaders did not lead to a solution. Reporter congressional leaders left the white house last night without a deal to end the Government Shutdown, now entering its third day. Its all focused on obamacare. Thats all its about. Reporter a new cbs news poll shows 72 of those polled disagree with shutting down the government over the Affordable Care act. With more americans blaming the gop for the impasse than the president and Senate Democrats. But House Republicans are standing their ground saying any new budget agreement must include changes to the president s healthcare law. All were asking for here is a discussion and fairness for the American People under obamacare. Reporter democrats say they will negotiate but only after the house passes a temporary budget with no strings attached. With neither side showing any sign of giving in, the estimated 800,000 federal workers now furloughed are bracing for what could be an extended period without pay. My honey do list gets longer. About 2,000 California National guard technicians are among those furloughed. Their job is to perform maintenance on firefighting aircraft. The head of the guard is highly critical of the decision. Union leaders recommended it but ac transit workers rejected their latest contract offer. The tentative agreement calls for a 9. 5 pay raise over the next 3 years. Workers said thats not good enough. I think it reflects deep grievances about concessions given in the past, economic ground that was lost when times were tough, and for many workers, not making up enough of that ground. The Union Members also rejected a previous offer in august. Leaders said they will meet soon to discuss their next move. A San Francisco murder suspect was carrying a gun and was not afraid to show it. Prosecutors say Surveillance Video shows the suspect openly holding a gun on a muni train last week. He is accused of shooting a man in the back when he got off the train and at one point, the suspect scratched his nose with the weapon but apparently no one on board noticed. It brings an end to standardized testing in california and opens the way for the common core era. Students will now get ready to take the smarter balanced test which judges how a student uses what he learned not just memorizeed. We did arguments of writing across all curriculum, what a smart balanced test looks like. We did a twoday training for the teachers in the district. The new testing will be ready by the spring of 2015. Sometimes it takes just one little idea to give an entire school a big lift. The teacher that had that idea wasnt going to take no for an answer.
