This building. Thats why they have been pouring water on it all night and they have been having trouble making sure they have enough gas in their trucks access to water to continue this firefight which has been going for about 12 hours. This is a sixstory building. A wall has collapsed there. You cant see it from the front. That fire still burning in the core of the building. It was reported just before 5 p. M. And it spread very quickly flames shooting 40 feet into the air at points. It could be seen throughout the bay area miles away. Its a Condo Development under construction. At this point it was made largely of wood, which went up like tinder. About 150 firefighters began their attack as embers and large burning pieces of debris fell around the neighborhood. So they had to move some resources to nearby buildings to make sure other fires didnt break out. Once that danger had mostly passed, firefighters had to worry about the original building collapsing. You could see it surrounded by a scaffolding system. The scaffolding system, while it does seem intact, it was greatly impinged by heat and the Structural Integrity is marginal at this time. Reporter as for the cause of this fire, the cause of the fire is going to be an Ongoing Investigation because there is a whole lot of evidence left at the original spark point in that building. Workers had already left for the day from their construction site. But investigators are looking into the possibility that the ongoing construction might have had something to do with it. Now, one firefighter was injured with burns to the face. He actually continued to fight the fire even after that happened. He is going to be okay. Thats the only injury reported. Right now live near mission bay, anne makovec, kpix 5. Thank you. This morning, evacuees still not allowed inside their homes. Heat from the flames just too intense. People living in apartments across the street and around the area felt it in a big way. Homes and businesses in the area were all evacuated out of fear the fire might spread. Kpix 5s Christin Ayers spoke to people who had to drop everything and leave. Reporter for at least a few hours, this is the only home a handful of evacuees have. I was able to go in and get him quickly. Reporter she got her dog but had to leave Everything Else behind when the apartments nearby were evacuated. Windows were shattered, smoky, hot, everything like that. Reporter the fire caused the buildings scaffolding to collapse and rain down, a danger that firefighters said would mean tenants would not be able to reach their homes for hours. Just because of all the danger of collapse of the scaffolding of the fire building itself so they might not have access to their buildings. Reporter pierre was watching from across the street at his Furniture Store when the fire started. It start small but within moments i like out the window and oh, my god half the building was engulfed with fire. Reporter the flames got so close that he was ordered evacuated for his own safety. Last he heard, his storefront had taken a hit. I have no idea whats going on. They wont let me back in. I hope its okay but last i heard, it was window was blown up. Reporter dawn wasnt sure she could get home, her building shut down air conditioning system to avoid fueling the wind whipped flames. It makes me nervous its this close by. Im hoping the wind stays calm so nothing jumps over this way. Reporter staying calm but keeping watch. Im definitely going to have my shoes on and be ready to leave, you know, until i hear that this thing really out. I dont think ill be sleeping anytime soon. Reporter Christin Ayers, kpix 5. Take a look at this video from a viewer. Michelle was there right when the fire started. A few minutes later you can see how the flames and smoke were spreading across the building. And just 13 minutes later, this view from down the street shows how intense the fire got. To give you more background now on the property itself, this is the mission bay 360 project, a 230 Million Development near at t park and ucsf mission bay. It was supposed to be hundreds of apartments plus retail space. Bre properties broke ground on the project a little less than a year ago. Bre said it doesnt know what started the fire but it did thank all the firefighters. The fire was immediately compared to the massive santana row fire almost 12 years ago. It is still the biggest fire in san joses recorded history. The huge complex was still under construction at the time. Winds were so strong that day, flying embers set fire to apartment buildings a mile south. A san jose firefighter who worked the santana row inferno in 2002 says theres no way to quickly put out fires this big. Potentially any building that large under construction is like a big pile of kindling waiting to go up in flames. They will have a hard time figuring out how this one started. Same thing with santana row. I dont think they ever truly figured out what started that fire. It burned all day and all night. And it smoldered for a week or two afterwards. Its really going to go out when the fuel is gone. Of course, now santana row is one of the most popular entertainment and retail destinations in the bay area. Images from yesterdays San Francisco fire are just hypnotizing and we have much more including more video of the building collapsing on our website at kpix. Com. 4 36 now. It was a little windy last night during the fire but this morning, it is really whipping. It is just whipping all around the bay area to 20 and 30mileanhour gusts even 40 miles an hour in the mountaintops. Thats the concern this morning. All those offshore winds, that dry offshore wind continuing to blow outside likely beginning to subside toward the latter part of the morning but right now seeing gusts, up to 45 Miles Per Hour in the mountaintops. So be careful driving today over the bridges, as well. Temperatures staying very mild because of that offshore wind already 61 in San Francisco, 60 in san jose and 60 in livermore. As we head toward the afternoon, here we go. These temperatures warming up nicely. Mid70s into san jose, 74 in oakland and 71 degrees in San Francisco. More on your weather coming up. Right now lets check the roads with elizabeth. Thanks, lawrence. It is those high winds thats big issue now for the morning commute. Theres actually two separate chpissued wind advisories. One now for the benicia bridge, if you are traveling northbound or southbound 680 between benicia and martinez. Again, be extra careful as well as for the bay bridge. They issued those high wind advisories around midnight. We called chp, they are still in effect now. So at the bay bridge toll plaza, everything looks great so far out of the east bay out of the oakland area. Once you reach the incline to about midspan, they do have those two left lanes blocked. Well get a check of the nimitz coming up. In the meantime, back to you guys. Thank you. Were learning more about a rape case involving a San Jose Police officer. Santa clara d. A. s office says 38yearold geoffrey graves escorted the victim to who had fought with her husband to a hotel. The officer returned to the room 15 minutes later. Court documents show he pushed the woman on to the bed and raped her. Investigators say theres physical evidence to back the victims claims. Although he had cleared the call, his vehicle was at the location for an extra 39 minutes approximately. The rape allegedly occurred back in september. Graves was arrested on monday after a fivemonth investigation. After months of silence, senator Dianne Feinstein accused the cia of spying on the u. S. Senate. But as kpix 5s allen martin reports, the agency now firing right back at that california senator. Reporter in a rare move, senator Dianne Feinstein took command of the senate floor to say she had had enough. I rise today to set the record straight. Reporter one of the intelligence communitys strongest supporters in the senate railed against the cia for more than 30 minutes saying that when, in 2009, the senate began investigating how the cia interrogated terrorism suspects, the cia responded with what feinstein calls a document dump, providing more than six million pages of material. Then feinstein claims some of those documents began disappearing, including whats become known as the panetta review, named for then cia director leon panetta, which according to feinstein acknowledged significant wrongdoing by the cia. Feinstein says the cia was spying on the u. S. Senate, accessing a computer given to the senate by the cia itself. Feinstein going public shows the extent of her outrage i have grave concerns that the cia search may well have violated the separation of powers principle embodied in the United States constitution. Reporter the cia directors response . He is appalled. As far as the allegations of, you know, cia hacking into, you know, senate computers, nothing could be further from the truth. We wouldnt do that. Reporter whats more, there are claims that if the senate had a copy of the panetta review, it was the senate staff who did the hacking. Feinstein fired back. To be clear, the Committee Staff did not hack into cia computers. Reporter the actions may be unconstitutional. If it is true that the cia hacked into the senates computers, it is very serious and i do think it rises to the level of possible criminal federal criminal violations and violation of separation of powers. Reporter allen martin, kpix 5. Both sides have asked the Justice Department to investigate. Time now is 4 40 on your wednesday. The search for that missing Malaysia Airlines jet has expanded again. Hundreds of thousands of dollars later another Bay Area Community is putting the brakes on a red light camera program. They are. Kpix 5s don knapp with why san rafael says it isnt worth it. Reporter after five years and nearly threequarters of a million dollars, san rafael is ending its experiment with red light cameras. Yay, great news. Reporter chris is obviously delighted. I dont think they really are impacting how people are behaving at intersections. Reporter thats pretty much what san rafael city leaders are saying. We didnt find that over a period of time that in fact its effectively reduced violations. Reporter the idea says the san rafael mayor was to reduce accidents but after an initial reduction, accidents leveled off. And those fighting red light traffic tickets were costing the city money. And then if someone challenges the ticket, then that officer then does have to go to Traffic Court and in some cases that might be an overtime cost. Reporter the costbenefit ratio wasnt working to the citys advantage. There are attorneys that are making a living out of defending their violators. Reporter san rafael is only the latest city across the nation to dump them. Los angeles quit its program in 2011. Seven states banned the cameras altogether. San francisco has cameras in 25 intersections and no plans to turn them off. The city claims cameras help reduce accidents 40 to 50 and in 2012 brought in 320,000 more than they cost to operate. But whatever the benefits or costs, some drivers are sorry to see them go. Thats all we need people texting and running red lights. Don knapp, kpix 5. Several communities are ending their programs as well including belmont and hayward but menlo park says they are going to add more.
