Your bay area bridges though off to a very good start. Live look at the san mateo bridge. Well check the golden gate. Super bowl city is a magnet for protestors. Last night at least 200 demonstrators took to the streets for blocks from the fan village and they encountered a Massive Police presence. Cate caugiran is live on the embarcadero with more on that faceoff with officers. Cate reporter it was a stark contrast between the celebrations going on here at super bowl city and the hundreds of protestors across the street. [ yelling ] reporter protest organizers called on San Francisco mayor ed lee to invest 5 million in housing and to create new programs for shelters and health services. Protestors carried signs that said, no penalty for poverty, and house keys for the homeless. Within an hour of when the protest started yesterday at 4 30, that group grew to hundreds, about 200 protestors. But there were also 80 helmet clad Police Officers standing by. Kpix 5 security analyst jeff harp says this beefed up security presence is likely the new norm for big events. Back over the last couple super bowls, one of the big differences is we didnt have a shooting in San Bernardino prior to it happening. We didnt have an attack in paris. We didnt have inside, you know, committing to the cause isis, you know, committing to the cause as much as they are now. Reporter yesterday the new homeless shelter at pier 80 was supposed to open. It has been delayed until today or tomorrow. Crews are still putting the tent together. It has room for up to 150 people. But the homeless and their advocates say that pier 80 shelter is just a way to keep them out of the event here at super bowl city. Cate caugiran, kpix 5. Just days from the super bowl we are seeing a lot more security all over the bay area including the bombsniffing dogs. Expect to see them at bay area airports, on bart, vta and muni. They are trained to detect over 19,000 types of explosives, as well as firearms, shell casings and ammunition. We are learning about an unusual security measure in place on the southern edge of the bay. Mark sayre has more ought of santa clara reporter this extreme southern tip of San Francisco bay is so peaceful, it hardly looks like it could factor into super bowl security. But this is where san tomas aquino creek joins the bay and just a mile and a half upstream the creek runs right next to levis stadium. So the coast guard will be setting up whats called the maritime exclusion zone to make sure nobody can get in or out of the creek channel. Jeh johnson is Homeland Security secretary. Increased Maritime Security and helicopter patrols by the coast guard on site intelligence support. Reporter san tomas aquino creek runs for 16 miles and brings water from the Santa Cruz Mountains to the mouth of the San Francisco bay. Even after our recent rains theres not a lot of water in the creek. The creek itself isnt particularly wide. Nevertheless, the coast guard will be on alert. National guard teams are already monitoring the perimeter and dozens of Law Enforcement agencies are involved in the overall security effort. There will be 70 cameras including 30 around the stadium for a 360degree view. In addition, there will be a camera mounted to a plane, another on a tower at an adjacent Great America theme park. We have all the bells and whistles known to man in sports broadcasting. 13 production trailers on site were brought in a month ago. Meanwhile, crews are putting the final touches on the set. A Southern California taxi driver held hostage by three escaped inmates is talking about his week long ordeal. Kpix 5s mark kelly on the one fugitive who actually saved the cabbies life. I feel very happy. Reporter cabbie long ma is grinning ear to ear. He survived a trio of jail escapees hijacking his taxi. [ nonenglish language ] i thought he was going to kill me not save me. Reporter for seven days, the three inmates with ma in tow drove from l. A. County to san jose. Ma says they would stay in cheap motels. The jail birds laughing as they watched their own manhunt play out on the local news. [ nonenglish language ] they turn on the tv and show me on the tv. Reporter ma says at one point fugitive Jonathan Tieu put a gun in his side. But the second inmate, bac duong protected him and saved his life. Eventually duong and ma split from the two fugitives making the long drive back to Southern California where duong eventually turned himself in to authorities. [ nonenglish language ] back to Southern California bac told me okay escaping the prison is not easy. Reporter as for the other two escapees, they were eventually spotted and arrested near Golden Gate Park in San Francisco leaving this cabbie with quite a story to tell. The men were also wired 3,000 while they were on the run allegedly by the mother of one of the inmates. Candidates running for president working hard to try to win over the New Hampshire voters now with town hall meetings, debates leading up to the primary next tuesday. Kpix 5s anne makovec is in our newsroom with an update including an event last night where Bernie Sanders and Hillary Clinton actually took turns on the same stage. Reporter they will do the same tonight for their fifth democratic debate before the nations first primary next week. Hillary clinton and Bernie Sanders made their case to voters during a town hall meeting last night. They continued to trade jabs over their progressive values. I do not know any progressive who has a super pac and takes 15 million from wall street. I was somewhat amused today that senator sanders set himself up to be the gatekeeper on who is a progressive. Clinton beat sanders in the eye can caucus just barely. She is trailing him in New Hampshire. Sanders is from neighboring vermont so he has a leg up. He is also dominating the attention of young voters. Now, on the republican side, donald trump and ted cruz remain locked in a war of words over the results in iowa. Trump went on a twitter rant wednesday accusing ted cruz of cheating to win the iowa caucus. Cruz says trump is throwing what he describes as trumper tantrums. An iowa gop Spokesman Says no fraud was committed and the caucus results are final. This guy ted cruz, ted cruz goes out, you talk about liars donalds insults get more and more hysterical the more and more upset he gets. Reporter an unexpected stop on the campaign trail for trump yesterday by the way. His private plane made an Emergency Landing in nashville, tennessee. The plane landed safely after engine trouble. Trump was late to his rally in little rock, arkansas. Republicans rand paul and Rick Santorum dropped out of the race wednesday. Santorum immediately endorse marco rubio. What they are doing for a group of bay area girl scouts after a potential pr nightmare. ,, team has renegged on a prome to a group of bay area girl scouts. And then did an about face. Reporter a massive overnight sleepover for 1200 girl scouts at levis stadium will go on after a big about face by the 49ers. I was sad but now im really happy that they have it on again. Reporter the girl scouts had challenged their girls to sell 600 boxes of cookies. Get it run through the tunnel, burst through a banner on the field. How cool is that . Reporter but monday the levis stadium suddenly canceled the sleepover something the contract allows in favor of a concert. The girls were devastated. We were just, like, all disappointed and we felt really bad. It kind of made me a little sad. Reporter that all changed once 49ers top management got wind of the scheduling conflict. In a statement, their event is now scheduled to take place at the venue on may 21st, 2016. Were thrilled to welcome them to levis stadium. Even more exciting, the 49ers will now pay for the event all 70,000 of it. And they are throwing in a 10,000 donation for good measure. Santa Clara University is scrambling to vaccinate thousands of students against a rare strain of meningitis. Two students pledging to the same fraternity tested positive for the potentially deadly disease in the past week. Health officials are worried because the Vaccines Available are effective against several strains of meningitis but not the ones the students have. Still, the county Health Department is setting up vaccination clinics for students today and friday. Happening today, one big chunk of the old bay bridge is coming down. Heres an animated look at what caltrans is taking on today. Its going to lower the first 504foot truss span. The whole operation will take two days to complete. It is 4 46 right now. A breakthrough in a cold case in mendocino county. The sheriffs deputy says two sets of bones found decades ago near willits have been identified as the remains of two teenaged girls from sonoma county. One of those girls was francine trimble, the other kerry graham. Both were last seen alive in forestville in december of 1978. An earring was found with the remains in a concrete vault and it wasnt until november that the links were confirmed through dna testing. Still not clear how the girls died. A 63yearold woman is in Critical Condition<\/a> after an attack at a bay area mall. Police say the suspect beat her, robbed her in the parking lot of the solano towne centre in fairfield and the suspect is under arrest. His mugshot was released last night. This man William David<\/a> king is also responsible for a similar attack on tuesday. You cant be safe in a public mall where theres security, where are you safe at . I plan on defending myself, absolutely. King faces attempted murder and robbery charges. The bay area lawmakers want to put the brakes on more money for bart. They are trying to block a 3. 5 billion bond measure that would go toward improving service and upgrading trains. They say the bart board has been irresponsible with the agencys money. Bart finances, sadly, are as dirty as a bart train. We need them to clean up their act. If we dont get the reinvestment, ontime performance will slip. Our reliability will slip.
