In other consumer news, big news last week, the fda banned several chemicals found in antibacterial soap. But one of the most concerning ingredients banned from soap is still legal in toothpaste. The official hand washing recommendation from the fda after banning a common ingredient last week in antibacterial soap. Despite the ban, this same chemical remains in toothpaste. We are very worried about team beginning exposed to this through their mouths through brushing their teeth. Its also used to fight plaque in toothpaste, one of the bestselling brands. We want the public to be aware of. The ban was a direct result of of this groups lawsuit against the agency. When antibacterial soap manufactures couldnt prove it was safe, the fda banned 19 active ingredients, including the most common. The ban applies to antibacterial soap soap considered an o, this c. Any chemical thats used in these kinds of products has to be safe and effective. The same standards dont necessarily apply to other products, like colgate toothpaste, submitted in the 1990s under a new drug application with new drugs, instead of safe and effective. They have to show the benefit outweigh the risks. It was shown to be effect t i have in reducing plaque. The balance of the benefit and risk has shown to be favorable for this product. However, they point to mounting safety concerns. We think the fda needs to revisit. Colgate points to more than 100 studies, with the original application, and says they provide safety updates annually reviewed by the fda. The chemical remains in other products, including makeup, kitchenwear and toys and pesticides. The longterm exposure to the chemical is higher than previously thought because its in so many products. Joining us today with more is dr. Ryder. Thanks for being here. Thank you very much. Our graphic here, toxic toothpaste, and there should be a big question mark there. Its not necessarily toxic. Lets talk about why you shouldnt be terrified to use your toothpaste and lets talk about the General Health concerns associated with this. We know theres concerns with hand soap and many studies have found this to be linked to Serious Health concerns. What about with toothpaste . Theres two concerns looked into extensively. One, if i use Something Like this in the mouth every day in a toothpaste, am i going to develop resistant bacteria, and now the studies that have come out and some have gone on for about five years, they have not found any increase in this. People arent resistant to the antibiotics. So far. The other concern is possible toxic effects. There have been reports on the effect of hormones and other toxic effects of the body and the effects of this have not been fully reported or resolved yet. It was reported when the product was first proposed to the fda in the mid90s. Would you say, when it comes to the effects on hormones and stuff like that, possibly its still unknown. Yes. Has not been prove either way. Yes. I believe both the fda and the American Dental Association continue to monitor the safety studies for this chemical in toothpaste and other dental products that a patient may use. A lot of people may think its strange that an agency would ban a chemical from one product and not the other and its important to note that soap is considered an otc, so as such they have a list of active ingredients that they have not proven to be both safe and effective and banned the chemicals in soap, but the toothpaste was submitted as as new drug application, going through a different process. They showed they proved it does prevent begin gingivitis. Some dentists dont recommend it with toothpaste and some do. The ones who dont, its based on safety concern. My advice to the patient or the consumer is if they are concerned about the safety, they can ask their dentist or their dental hygienist, what is effective in reducing plaque and the other diseases. Theres other approaches that may be effective but i would emphasize one point and that is all the things give you an added benefit. Right. The most important thing is brushing your teeth regularly [ overlapping speakers ] and using something you can get into the hard to reach places. Thank you very much for being here. Thank you.
