KPIX KPIX 5 News Sunday Morning Edition August 24, 2014

The differences, a 6. 0 this morning. The loma was a 6. 9 but the differences are staggering. People would think the initial all six earthquakes are the same. Absolutely not. Were seeing that happen right now. Were seeing a lot of damage with the magnitude 6 earthquake which the epicenter is closer to San Francisco than loma prietta was in 1989. Theres a significant difference in the amount of shaking, the amount of violence on the ground between a 6. 9 and 6. 0 even though it sounds close. On the whole scale it is. A 6. 9 is about five to 10 times stronger than the 6. 0. So even though were seeing significant damage today, even though this was rated officially a strong earthquake in the bay area and the entire bay area felt it, all seven million of us did this is far weaker than what we saw 25 years ago. But that said and you must qualify its been a quarter century since weve had an earthquake this strong in the bay area. Were all waking up to it, in some cases jarring at 3 00 a. M. Youre continually seeing pictures from chopper 5 on the righthand portion of the tv screen, most from napa. A lot of buildings there, beautiful but old but and some not reinforced have major problems. This is new video we found on youtube. A tour of damage from somebody that lives near napa. Im in my garage. This is what the earthquake did. Theres no power there is completely broken glass. That house is much worse, ill walk you through it if its bright enough. There is a guitar on the ground. This is broken glass. This came off of a book shelf. This is where all the glass things were. Theres everybody has a story this morning. That was one gentleman who saw some damage. Luckily his damage appeared minor. In the epicenter this morning. A lot of the damage, some of the Historic Buildings in downtown napa. Juliet has been surveying that damage. Juliet, have police blocked off any more areas as they are assessing more of this damage . Reporter no, theyve kept the Historic Downtown area blocked off for this reason. Look behind me. This is the old superior courthouse. You can see all of the damage from the earthquake that happened overnight. We pan up, you can see the broken windows and even the top portion of this building. Weve been given clearance to come here for 30 seconds, then were going to move away because the main concern are these buildings are fragile, could go any minute. That is why this area is blocked off to people in the area. As you might imagine a lot of napa residents, longtime residents coming down here this morning to take a look and survey all of the damage. Authorities are telling me please send out the warning to have people stay clear because we really are in a fragile area. This could go any moment and if were talking about aftershocks obviously this is not a good spot to be. So were going to walk this way. This is where the boundary lines are. I would imagine in the next halfhour or so they are going to push these back because these folks shouldnt even be this close at this point. Law enforcement is here and they are here to protect the public and they have been responding to calls all morning long. Im going to come here as alex is showing you damage. Im going to talk to some longtime napa residents who were certainly jolted out of their beds in the middle of the night. Your name . Israel. Reporter you felt it obviously . Yeah. I was in bed. Just chilling and i heard i thought somebody was knocking. It was the bleep watch your language please, ok. There was damage . Yes. Reporter stay clear and be careful and a lot of the warnings are to stay out of the area as well. Im going to move here. As you can see some of the damage in this area. This case in point is what were seeing along the historic block here. Building after building. Like this. Theres been water damage, and a lot of call lines, in the cell service has been really spotty as well. So if you dont have an emergency call then make sure you keep those lines clear. Thats really what is going on down here in napa. A lot of people coming out here to take a look. In fact a lot of people in pajamas. Did you feel it . It threw me out of bed for sure. Reporter did you know what to do instantly . No. Youre too scared to do anything. You just want to get it over with. It was long. Kept going and going. Reporter when you come out here at first light what is your general reaction . We had flash lights to try to see what it is and now were getting a closer look. Its amazing. I didnt know what to expect. The older buildings, i didnt i didnt know if they would still be standing. It was that big. I have been through a few but that was the biggest one for sure. Reporter we dont know what could be the next chapter in this or hopefully this is the end of it. Theres a possibility of aftershocks. Another one was scary. Reporter you felt it . Yeah, not long ago. About an hour ago. Youre hanging out here. Were trying to stay clear of the collapsible buildings. Youre ok . I think its ok now. Reporter thank you for your time. Again, this is probably the biggest damage were seeing just from our vantage. That is the courthouse. That really just gives you that indication of what this 6. 0 magnitude earthquake did here. Were just a few miles away from the epicenter. So as we drove here in the middle of the night wondering how napa is faring we had our flashlights out, peeking to see there was some damage in the roadways. Now as the sun is coming up were really getting a good look at this. As im seeing this a lot of people in the area are reporting damage. They are reporting windows shattered, and turned off, obviously their electricity and water and all of the things youre supposed to do. Fortunately i am not hearing about a lot of injuries in this particular area. Even Law Enforcement has told me that as well. So im keeping my fingers crossed that hopefully just in this particular area were ok and it was just the Historic Buildings. Maybe because it was in the middle of the night maybe that is fortunate as well. We do know can you hear me we know that 70 people actually had been admitted to the queen of the Valley Hospital in napa. Most of those injuries were minor but there were some injuries coming in from this earthquake. A lot of it was from falling items. Were talking about cuts and bruises, people hitting their heads on things falling from their shelves. Were getting reports. Reporter i have heard that too. In fact televisions falling down on people as well. I guess my point was its not going to be extreme injuries. Absolutely. Those buildings that youre standing near now, the Historic Buildings, they have not been retrofitted. Were seeing bricks falling from them. It almost looks at this point like those buildings are not going to be reopened for some time. Then this is the heart of napa. This is the post office. This is the courthouse. I think they are going to have a lot of trouble dealing with where to put these Vital City Services this morning. Were also seeing now on the live picture some fire trucks passing you right now. Reporter this is what weve been seeing all morning long. So as were talking about what is going to happen to the downtown area i think right now they are just responding minute by minute to the calls they are getting in. There have been several emergency calls, hopefully this one is not life threatening. And some fires. Also actually, youre on this church here. One of the Church Members told me that the face of that Church Actually had some gorgeous stained glass. Its shattered. So theres been damage to that as well. In terms of getting the city back on its feet again its going to be a Long Time Coming because these are some this is the heart of downtown napa. And one of the county supervisors told me that their building had to be cleared out. In fact the building were talking about is right here. One of the supervisors telling me that they cant even go inside because of the damage. They are actually having to move their operations on to another facility where they can handle phone calls and tend to business that is going to be happening in napa. As for this area, its going to be closed off for a long time. And mainly because we really dont know the Structural Integrity now of the buildings because they could actually go at any time. So that is why were staying clear and keeping our distance as well. Can alex, your photographer, get a shot back towards the courthouse . When you were showing us the video before you could see the significant cracks at the top but you can also see all of these tiny cracks. Everywhere throughout the building. Please show us because you can see smaller cracks. A big one in the top corner. Reporter absolutely. Ok, well take you from the top down. This is the old courthouse. Obviously you can see the major damage now. Theres just gutted, the hole through the roof there. Then as we pan down, you can see the cracks in the building towards the face of it and on the side. You can see half a dozen of them now, as we go further down you can see the glass which is shattered. Further down you can see all of the remnants of all of the brick and mortar that has fallen down to the sidewalk. And when you look at the building, were not going to go closer than where we are. Because theres really no telling just the Structural Integrity of it now. As we are talking about the possibility of aftershocks this area could be hit once again. Its amazing to see a building of this magnitude and just how structurally sound it looks it was knocked down by this 6. 0. Im no engineer but that does not look structurally sound. Especially as you mentioned the possibility of aftershocks. Weve already seen a 3. 6 this morning. Theres more than 50 chance from what were hearing from the usgs of a 5. 0 or larger. Theres also the chance, albeit small of a 5 to 10 chance that this 6. 0 quake should have been a 4shock to a larger quake. So that likelihood gets lower minute by minute thankfully. Those are things that reporter let me walk you around here too sorry paul i was just going to show you, since were talking about the Building Structures here, just about an hour ago we heard this loud crashing sound. That happened to be the top of the building youre looking in the corner section of downtown napa. That piece started to fall down. It is just hanging there. So no one is allowed in that area. We will not be going near there. And that just shows you that in any second, who knows what is going to happen to some of the buildings . Others, smk dab in the middle of the street are just fine, the restaurants that just opened seems to be just fine. Law offices, those are gutted and this bail bonds office and where this car is on the corner, also suffered damage. Youre really getting a look at the complete square where its kind of the heart of downtown napa. And it is going to be definitely slowing business down. Theres going to be a lot of restructuring that needs to go on. It would be very curious to see the beautiful towns north of napa on highway 29. Because they also have some of those old Historic Buildings. Many of which are great restaurants and great wineries. As our coverage expands beyond napa over the next several hours and days. Areas close to this there are many historic towns, napa is the biggest but ill be very curious to see how many other pictures we see like this in other communities. Buildings not yet properly retrofitted. This mornings earthquake is going to be a wakeup call for a lot of property owners. Speaking of a lot of you out there wondering what to do now. Maybe you dont have significant damage in your home but one thing to keep in mind lets go live to phil, he has advice for us. Reporter thats right. Lets remember there could be another shock out there. So we have a checklist provided by pg e. Make sure everyone in your home is safe. If you smell gas or hear gas escaping evacuate the building. If you suspect the leak dont use electricity appliances because sparks can ignite the gas. Switch of you suspect damag household electrical wiring. Governor brown has come out with a statement in rese to this mornings six poinh meanwhile Governor Brown happened to be in the bay area web the shake happened and came out with a statement in response to this mornings 6. 0 earthquake. The office of Emergency Services has been on full activation since early this morning, working closely with state and local emergency managers. First responders and transportation officials to respond to the impacts to residents and critical infrastructure. Despite todays earthquake. Motor racing will go on as planned today at the sonoma raceway. The governor called an Early Morning cab met nying on this cap net meeting on this. They are not just checking napa. But checking to see if theres domino damage. Remember we have levees in the state, a number of extras needs that need to be checked infrastructure needs that need to be checked as well and the Emergency Services will be coordinated with them. Despite this, racing going on today at the sonoma raceway. The grand prix is set to start at 1 40 p. M. Again Officials Say they have inspected all major systems including the race course and theres no evidence of any significant damage. So no racing fans or campers were injured during the quake. Back to you. New information coming in. Weve been talking about injuries to the queen of the Valley Hospital in napa. Originally we talked about seven patients, now were hearing 87 people might have been admitted to the hospital including three critical, including a child. Were waiting to get confirmation on that and exactly what may have caused the injuries. Likely things like falling debris. I believe i saw one unconfirmed report talking about the child may have been hit by wriks coming down from a fireplace. Bricks. Thats one of the places first to see damage often when it comes to a earthquake of this size. We have new video from highway 12 now in napa. We saw the roads buckling. Its not closed, people are driving around it. That is an amazing thing as far as transportation now. Everything does appear to be ok. Besides this road buckling that weve seen which has caused watermain breaks. But the bridges are all open, the highways are open at this time. We had a temporary closure on 84 but now despite this damage that you can see on highway 12 the roadway is open this morning. Cal trans and chp has been hard at work. Its been helpful since the sun has come up. This is a live look now at traffic. You can see moving smoothly on highway 12. Usgs just updated the amount of aftershocks just since the quake hit at 3 20 this morning. Were talking four hours and 25 minutes. We have had 65 aftershocks. From this earthquake. The largest of which was a 3. 6 which happened about an hour ago excuse me, two hours ago, 5 47. So 65 aftershocks already. The usgs also says there is a 50 chance of a magnitude 5 aftershock over the next five days. You basically subtract one magnitude from the one that hit. Theres a 50 50 shot of having one. Were talking about the possibility, 50 50 chance, flipping a coin of a magnitude 5 aftershock sometime between now and friday morning. You the pictures just in from a watermain break in vallejo is something they are dealing with around the area which has been a challenge when trying to fight some of the fires this earthquake has caused. Specifically one in napa at a trailer park, napa valley trailer park. Four homes burned. They are destroyed. About a dozen other homes were knocked off their foundation. Andrea borba is live i believe at that park now. No, we dont have her. Shes at that spot there. So we have at least, again, four people, homes destroyed, about a dozen others homeless at this time because of the Structural Integrity. They are knocked off the foundation. Some irony were seeing some of the infrastructure underground having problems. One of which is the gas main breaks which causing some fires and then you also have watermain breaks in the same neighborhoods which limits the availability of the water. Some of the things that were were going to be seeing in the aftermath of a 6. 0 magnitude quake. If you got up this morning, this is the biggest earthquake, that has occurred in the bay area in 25 years. If you slept through it you know know for sure youre a very heavy sleeper. People felt it all over the bay area, as far south as morgan hill and salinas and as far east as nevada. Were hearing stories of damage. A real scare for people. I felt it in my apartment in downtown San Francisco at the highrise, the entire building was swaying for what felt like 20 to 30 seconds. I knew immediately i had to head straight to work. Rule number one in television, if that happens come on in to work. Paul, you felt it . In the east . Yeah, in the east bay obviously and thankfully for us it was not as significant as what were seeing these are live pictures from chopper 5 in napa, but there was certainly the jolt, shaking or rolling afterwards. Lasted a while. And it is something to remind us all because we have not had many reminders recently that we live in one of the most seismically active areas not only in the United States but in the entire world. And im extremely thankful its a 6. 0 reminder because weve been told time and time again theres a chance of a 7. 0 or 8. 0 most likely on some of the other faults. This particular one happened on the west napa fault which does have a history of moderate earthquakes, 5. 2 back in the year 2000. This, a 6. 0, the strongest earthquake in the bay area since loma prietta in 1989. We spoke earlier with representatives from the usgs. They are working feverishly now crunching numbers and likelihoods for another quake now. They did say that some of the pressure is likely relieved in the Northern California fault system. But as far as predictions, its all a numbers game. Its difficult for them. This luckily will give them more information on what comes next when we see a shaker this large. But they are trying now to figure out what could come of this or what may have caused this. So they are feverishly trying to figure that out. They like to in the absence of information, that would be bad so we want to give everybody the information we can and what theyve given us is that when you have a magnitude 6 earthquake theres about a 50 50 shot of one magnitude lower, having an aftershock be that strong. Over
