Live in new york, ines ferre. Now back to you. So much devastation, ines. Thank you. Among the casualties from sandy a replica historic ship made for a movie. Cbs 5 reporter cate caugiran joins us with the dramatic rescue operation as that ship went down in the storm. Cate. Reporter we will talk about that but right now i want to let you know that hundreds of people are being evacuated in the northern new jersey town this a levee broke flooding the area. As you were mentioning off North Carolina, this was a dramatic rescue of the hms bounty. One by one coast guard plucked crew from the ocean. The bowny sank when her engine and pumps failed. It was built in 1960 as a replica of the original 1787 vessel. It was used in a number of big budget films. Its a sad thing with a ship like that. A sad thing. All that work and all the history of that boat just gone, just like that. Reporter the bountys captain is still missing. This were 16 crew on board, 14 were rescued. One person died. This morning, here are pictures out of new jersey that show that extreme damage. This storm is being blamed for flooding, toppled trees on cars, downed power lines and thousands of evacuees forced to seek higher ground. Atlantic city became an extension of the atlantic ocean. Seaweed and ocean debris swirled in the knee deep water covering downtown streets. Take a look at this. This is the snapped construction crane thats 75 stories dangling over a condo construction project. These are live pictures that youre looking at right now. Its swinging like a pendulum over midtown manhattan. Now, this broke yesterday afternoon when the winds hit new york city. A nearby hotel was evacuated in case the snapped portion of the machinery broke and crashed. There are still rescue efforts ongoing as the storm continues to go through the east coast. Cate caugiran, cbs 5. Sandy has been downgraded from a category 1 hurricane to a tropical storm. Still got a lot of rain to come down though. Lets check lawrence and find out whats in store today on day two. Speaking of rain, there are some places in new jersey almost 12 inches of rain yesterday in places with nine inches were common and sandy coming onshore only as a category 1 but really had a very deep low Pressure Center and also the way it approached the coastline in a perpendicular fashion really combined to produce some record storm surges into the new york area. In any event, they had a 13 foot storm surge causing the flooding there in manhattan. Now, sustained winds of 65 miles per hour. On the back side of this we are seeing a lot of snow maybe two to threefoot of snow some blizzard conditions over the appalachian mountains. This is going to slowly drag its way out so its going to continue to dump tremendous amounts of rain for the next 24 to 36 hours. Thats to go along with winds. We are not done with sandy by any means in fact well see more strong gusty winds and possibly more flooding as long as sandy slowly moves out. Here in the bay area, we have some dense fog early on today along the coastline and parts of the north bay valleys. Visibility down to a quarter mile. Temperatures staying rather mild this morning mainly into the 50s except in the north bay. Down into the 40s. By the afternoon these temperatures should be bump be up near seasonal. Those numbers usually in the 60s and 70s will be right there toward the afternoon but sandy, what a storm, elizabeth. Really. Those are amazing pictures. Here at home we are doing pretty good even though conditions are starting to get busy especially in the usual slow spots around this time of the morning in the east bay so if you coming through the dublinpleasanton area through livermore this is what it looks like. Headlights moving westbound and we can go to our maps and show you a drive time across this stretch just beginning to see brake lights past the Wind Turbines towards vasco road. Drive time 14 or 15 minutes through the Altamont Pass but unfortunately the delays are growing and eastbound we are seeing that roadwork still in lanes eastbound approaching north greenville so just heads up. They have been doing ongoing roadwork across that stretch. Otherwise westbound 4 and eastbound 4 through antioch a few brake lights. Past antioch everything is free and clear towards pittsburgbay point and concord and a quick check of the Golden Gate Bridge. Look at all that fog. Thick along the coastline. Thats your timesaver traffic. Back to you guys. Thank you. The storm has forced the cancellations of thousands of flights and including hundreds that were supposed to go into and out of bay area. Elissa harrington is at sfo to tell us what passengers can expect today. Reporter passengers can expect more cancellations and here at sfo in terminal 2 alone im already counting 17 cancellations this morning on the departures and arrivals board. Now, this storm has absolutely crippled air travel to and from the east coast grounding nearly 14,000 flights stranding travelers. More than 200 have been canceled out of sfo alone. The destinations affected including jfk, boston, chicago, philly, newark. A quarter of the flights in the United States pass in and out of new york so travelers all over are feeling a ripple effect. Even if you are not trying to fly to the east coast, you still need to check your flight status. Yesterday i spoke with a woman trying to get to idaho. Her flight was canceled because of that domino effect. Even travelers overseas have had to deal with cancellations and again so far at sfo more than 200 Flights Canceled out of oakland, jetblue flights to new york and d. C. Were canceled and san jose two jetblue flights to boston and jfk have been canceled through wednesday. Given the fact that the weather has yet to move through some of the cities its difficult to gauge the full extent of it now and that makes it very important for passengers to check the status of their flights. I was out here for a wedding. I was supposed as to fly out last night and things happened obviously. So been here a little while. Reporter it can take days until airlines are back to their normal operations. If you are flying today check your flight status early. Make sure to doublecheck it throughout the day because as the storm changes, the flight could change, as well. And if you do need to make any changes, try and do that at home over the phone or on your computer to avoid the lines at the airport. At sfo, Elissa Harrington, cbs 5. 5 09. Sandy could end up being the october surprise of the 2012 president ial race. President obama putting Campaign Events on hold for the time being to oversee the federal governments Disaster Relief efforts. And republican challenger mitt romney will also hold no Campaign Events today. Romney did make an appearance in ohio yesterday but kept much of the focus on the weather. A lot of people are going to be facing some real tough times as a result of sandys fury. And so if you have the capacity to make a donation to american red cross, you can go online and do that. I am not worried at this point about the impact on the election. Im worried about the impact on families and worried about the impact on our first responders. The election will take care of itself next week. Election day is one week from today. You can find continuing coverage on sandy on cbssf. Com at the top of the page links to watch live video coverage and track east coast radar and airport delays, as well. Super storm sandy is marching slowly inland after leaving at least 17 people dead in its march up the east coast. When we come back well speak with someone in the hard hit area of queens, new york. And a bay area restaurant infested with roaches. Why the owners are using the creepy crawlers as a way to advertise. Coming up. And the show must go on. How late night comedians in new york did without audiences. ,,,,,,, this is hayden. ,,,,,, thats elizabeth. And thats skyler. And his mom, nancy. Theyre just a few of the californians who took it on themselves to send you a message about what they need to restore years of cuts to their schools. Prop thirtyeight. Thirtyeight raises billions in new revenue bypasses sacramento and sends every k through 12 dollar straight to our local schools. Every school. For them. For all of us. They closed the subways and we cant get an audience so the question is, do we do or not do a show . I dont know. Its up to you. Its up to me . Yeah. Lets go for it do a show. All right. Great. Come on, lets do a show. Nothing like a little humor. The show went on despite the nasty storm as you can see. The show was done yesterday without a Live Audience at the ed sullivan theater. Jimmy fallon also did his new york talk show without an audience yesterday. Folks probably appreciated it if they could watch it because a lot of people had no power. Letterman didnt have much staff, as well. No. So he did it with a Skeleton Crew. A lot of news teams in new york right now some of the morning shows and what not Skeleton Crew because folks just cant get in because of the subways. Its very true. 5 16 right now. Lets check the traffic on our roads. Hows it looking . You know, its looking great. The biggest usually the indicator of how things are flowing across the bay bridge. At the toll plaza you can see its super light this morning. You will also notice fog in the distance. Fog may be a factor in the morning drive. Could impact your visibility. Especially on the coast we are seeing a lot of it along 880. We can barely see the nimitz freeway in the traffic cam rand its thick across the Golden Gate Bridge. The bay bridge once again super light heading into San Francisco so we found this other Traffic Camera we could show you at 880 near the 66 exit right there by the oakland coliseum. And headlights should be moving northbound. So overall everything is moving okay despite the fog. Its about 15 minutes between 238 and the maze. Otherwise, lets go to our other maps. Other live Traffic Cameras bart always a great option. If you want to ditch the roads dont feel like driving in fog bart on time including all those bart stops heading towards downtown San Francisco. Pittsburgbay point line all lines so far on time. Heres the Golden Gate Bridge that i mentioned they picked that up roadwork on the approach to the bridge so now its a 13minute drive time between 580 and the Golden Gate Bridge toll plaza super light between san rafael and the bridge. Once again fog you can see it this morning coming towards doyle drive. They can some lane changes so they also opened more southbound 101 lanes to traffic heading towards the city. Westbound 580 still have these brake lights coming through the Altamont Pass and livermore but fortunately it hasnt impacted the drive time. 15 minutes between the Altamont Pass between the Altamont Pass and the dublin interchange. Fog at the coast. Parts of the north bay valleys. Dense fog advisory in effect this morning in those spots. The fog is going to lift though. Temperatures in the 40s by the afternoon nice sunny mild day in many spots up into the upper 70s in some spots inland. 60s and 70s around the bay and mostly sunny skies this afternoon. Fog at the coast but temperatures there into the 60s. We have changes coming with High Pressure holding on today and then this guy begins to set up for halloween, can you believe it . It looks like timing is moving up. Folks in the north bay could have rain on wednesday. So toward the parade tomorrow, looks okay for the giants parade but in the evening heres the cold front sagging into the bay area. By 7 00 or so late nitric or treating could be wet late night trick or treating could be wet. East bay temperatures into the upper 70s and pleasanton about 73 walnut creek and 74 degrees in fairfield. Inside the bay temperatures in the upper 60s into San Francisco. About 69 in oakland. And about 63 degrees in daly city. Next couple of days we are going to see a return of the rain looks like the showers continuing into thursday. And then dry some mild weather returns maybe some 80s into latter part of weekend. Thats a look at weather. Back to you. Back to our top story, residents on the east coast hunkering down this morning waking up to see the damage. For millions there is no power and probably wont be for days. Joining us on the phone now is gina in queens, new york this morning. Gina, thanks for joining us this morning. Thanks for having me. First of all, how are you doing out there . Well, were doing great. My neighborhood is the first neighborhood over from manhattan over the east river. And the house that were renting is in the edge of zones b and c in evacuation so were pretty dry and i can actually see the sun trying to come out through the clouds. Well, that is great news. The winds and rain have died down. Are you able to get around . Obviously the subway is shut down. Are buses moving . Are people going about their business is this or is new york kind of frozen this time right now while they take care of this monster problem . The only time i remember new york being this quiet was september 11, 2001. This is the subways arent running. The buses arent running. I saw one lonely postal truck. So it is true they will deliver with rain, sleet, snow and hurricanes. But i do see people out walking around. Mostly everybody is just hunkerred down. The mta, our transit authority, said they dont know when they are going to be able to get the subways running. So for those of house live on this side of the east river, were pretty much cut off from manhattan for now. What was it like last night . It was scary. I have to say i had a lot of confidence in the city. I monitored what the city was saying very closely on social media and it seemed that they knew what they were doing and they projected a lot of confidence. So they told people get inside, stay inside, they kept us inside very early well before the storm started. And so we just kind of made a party of it me and my little boys. We built pirate forts and worked puzzles and baked cookies and listened to the howling wind. Yeah. Well, thats what you do. You bring the family together and you just kind of get through it together. Gina neff with us on the telephone from queens, new york. We wish you all the best and a speedy recovery to your city. Thank you so much. Thank you very much. Thanks. 5 21. Coming up, the aftermath of sandy a look at the trail
