Rose good evening. Scott is on assignment. Im charlie rose, and this is our western edition. The United States Supreme Court is taking up one of the biggest cases of the 21st century. The justices will decide whether samesex marriage will become the law of the land. At issue does the constitutions guarantee of equal protection under the law mean gay couples have the same right to marry as straight couples. Here is our chief legal correspondent, jan crawford. Reporter the announcement that the court will decide once and for all the issue of same sex marriage reflects how dramatically the law has changed, beginning in 2003, whenstic the justices struck down laws in nearly a third of the country that made homosexual sex a crime. Today, just 12 years later, 36 states allow lesbians and gays to marry. The justices now will look at states where samesex marriage re remains illegal. An ohiobased federal Appeals Court all but forced their hand. It ruled in november samesex couples had no constitutional right to marry. This was in direct conflict to other Appeals Court rulings allowing samesex marriage. Justice ruth bader ginsburg, late last year, signaled the justices would only take up the issue once a lower court upheld a marriage ban. Reporter many say the justices have already paved the way for this case when they ruled two years ago that the federal government must recognize legal samesex marriages. Dissenting from that decision, Justice Antonin Scalia said the court had made it easy, inevitable, for lower courts to take the next bold step andte strike down state laws that banned samesex marriage. But its not inevitable that the Supreme Court will take that step, and, charlie, the stakes are huge. If the justices rule there is no constitutional right to samesex marriage, well, that would throwsex into question marriages legalized in many states by those lower courts. Rose jan, thanks. Before the courts announcement today, pope francis made an apparent reference to samesex marriage and the churchs opposition to it. Visiting the philippines, the pope warned catholics to be careful of what he called ideological colonialization that is trying to destroy the family. One week after the terror attacks that left 17 people dead in paris, western europe is going on the offensive. More than two dozen people have been arrested in france, belgium, germany, and ireland. Ve Belgium Police alone conducted more than a dozen raids after ae, fire fight last night left two suspects dead. Charlie dagata is in brussels. Reporter the charred walls shattered glass, and bloodied hallway, aftermath of a fierce gun battle that left two suspects dead and a country on edge. Police were on high alert today. Despite more than a dozen arrests, police are still searching for three heavily armed suspects with links to isis militants in syria. Is some jewish schools were closed. Government buildings were heavily guarded. At the scene of thursday nights fire fight, police said they found kalashnikov assault rifles, explosives, police uniforms, and a large amount of cash. Belgian authorities stressed theth terror arrests had no connection to the attacks in paris last week that killed 17. Belgium is the highest per capita exporter of foreign fighters in europe, estimated to be at least 300. Some have brought their fight back home. A number of the antiterror raids took place in lowincome suburbs like this one near brussels. Bernard clerfayt is the mayor of scarbeck, where half the population is muslim. Why are so many people from these communities going to syria . The rate of unemployment is higher. The social difficulties are higher for them. They dont feel to be a part of society as everybody else. Are and they try to take revenge. T reporter today, the belgian government announced it would give the army new surveillance powers, root out jihadi propaganda online, and strip terrorists of citizenship to try and prevent them from returning home. Of the 13 suspects arrested here, five have been formally charged with participating in terrorist activities. But, charlie, thats just the beginning. The Police Agency europol estimated that theyre dealing with thousands of potential terrorists. Rose Charlie Dagata in brussels, thank you. Michael morell is a former Deputy Director of the c. I. A. , and now our cbs news Senior Security contributor. W michael, let me begin with this how big a problem do we have in europe . Charlie, this is a very large problem. Tial were looking at potentially a very large number of people. Weve got somewhere between 2,500 and 5,000 west europeans who have gone to fight in iraq and syria. You probably have several hundred who went to train in pakistan or yemen at some point. And you have some unknown number of folks who never left western europe but who have become radicalized. So its potentially a very large number. Rose mike, it seems like the Terror Threat has never been so difficult. Yet it was four years ago that Osama Bin Laden was killed. What happened . Charlie, in the fight against al qaeda weve had since 9 11, al qaeda has had a great victory, and weve had a great victory. Our great victory has been the decimation, degradation, near defeat of the al qaeda leadership in pakistan, the people that brought us 9 11. Their great victory has been the spread of their ideology across a very wide Geographic Area europe, africa, middle east, south asia. On september 10, 2001, al qaeda was on one place in the planet afghanistan. Today, theyre in 30 to 40 countries. Un rose which one should we fear the most . I think there are two groups to fear. One is al qaeda in yemen, which maintains the most sophisticated capability to attack us here inre the homeland. The ability to bring an airliner down, for example. And we also have to fear isis, which has this very strongo ra capability to radicalize young me men in western europe and other countries, including the United States. Rose thank you, mike. Youre welcome. R rose today, president obama and british Prime Minister David Cameron wrapped up two days of talks at the white house. At a news conference, the two leaders vowed to take on what cameron called the poisonous ideology of islamist extremists. Cameron also sat down with our Bob Schieffer for a oneonone interview for sundays face the nation. A on bob joins us now. Bob. Charlie, when i asked the Prime Minister if the terrorist threat was greater now than ever, he put it this way. We face a very severe threat. Vere thats what were calling it severe, because we believe an attack is highly likely. But, frankly, weve been in this struggle against extremist islamists, terrorism now for well over a decade and a half. So we know what it takes to win, but its going to take a lot of perseverance. Ev reporter well, have we entered a new phase here . Is that what this attack in paris has signaled . What i would say is this threat keeps morphing because its the same fundamental problem extremist islamist terror but whereas the majority of it was coming from the afghanistan pakistan area,ki now you see much more of it coming out of iraq and syria and the threat posed by isil. Added to that, youve got the socalled selfstarter or lone wolf terrorists, people who have been radicalized because of what theyve seen on the internet, who may not be connected to some plot that is being hatched in iraq or syria. So the threat has changed and altered but its still based on the fundamental problem of a poisonous death cult narrative which is the perversion of one of the worlds major religions. And thats the thing were still up against. Reporter cameron said that he returns home feeling there is a coordinated, coherent strategy. But he said we have to realize this is going to take, charlie a long time to do. Rose Bob Schieffer in washington, thanks. I was taking warfarin, but wondered if i kept digging could i come up with something better. My doctor told me about eliquis. For three Important Reasons. One, in a clinical trial, eliquis was proven to reduce the risk of stroke better than warfarin. Two, eliquis had less major bleeding than warfarin. And three, unlike warfarin theres no routine blood testing. Dont stop taking eliquis unless your doctor tells you to, as stopping increases your risk of having a stroke. Eliquis can cause serious and in rare cases fatal bleeding. Dont take eliquis if you have an artificial heart valve or abnormal bleeding. While taking eliquis, you may bruise more easily and it may take longer than usual for any bleeding to stop. Seek immediate medical care for sudden signs of bleeding like unusual bruising. Eliquis may increase your bleeding risk if you take certain medicines. Tell your doctor about all planned medical or dental procedures. Those three Important Reasons are why eliquis is a better find for me. Ask your doctor today if eliquis is right for you. Health can change in a minute. So cvs health is changing healthcare.
