This is the cbs evening news with scott pelley. Pelley this is our western edition. President trumps team got more than one warning about Michael Flynn. The president s First National security adviser who was fired for lying to the Vice President. We learned today that after the election, president obama, who had fired flynn himself from an intelligence job, let president elect trump know that he shouldnt hire flynn. And today former acting attorney general sally yates told congress that she warned the white house that the russians knew about the lie to Vice President pence and could blackmail flynn. Heres jeff pegues. It was matter of some urgency. Om reporter sally yates said she felt compelled to inform the white house that President Trumps National Security adviser Michael Flynn had misled the Vice President about his contacts with Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak in late december. U. S. Intelligence had gathered intercepts of his conversations. Democrat dianne feinstein. So what youre saying is that general flynn lied to the Vice President . Thats certainly how it appeared, yes, because the Vice President went out and made statements about general flynns conduct that he said were based on what general flynn had told tm, and we knew that that just flat wasnt true. I Donald John Trump do solemnly swear. Reporter on january 24th, four days after president inumps inauguration, flynn was interviewed by f. B. I. Agents at the white house as burt of the bureaus investigation into russian meddling in the election. Two days later on the 26th, yates met at the white house with the president s lawyer don mcgahn. She said she informed him then that flynn had been compromised. The russians also knew about what general flynn had done, and the russians also knew that pneral flynn had misled the Vice President. This was a problem. Thcause not only did we believe that the russians knew this, but that they likely had proof of this information. And that created a compromised ontuation, a situation where the National Security adviser essentially could be blackmailed by the russians. Reporter the next day yates met with mcgahn again. He asked whether the Justice Department was pursuing charges heainst flynn. E they were concerned that taking action might interfere h th the f. B. I. Investigation. And we told him, both the senior career official and i, that he should not be concerned with it. Reporter mcgahn then asked to see the evidence against flynn. Three days later on january 30th, yates agreed, but that night the Obama Administration holdover was fired for refusing to defend the president s travel ban. On i dont know what happened after that because that was my last day with d. O. J. Id reporter even after yates warning, the white house didnt act right away. It took more than two weeks for flynn to be fired. President trump called flynn a wonderful man even after he was fired. Today on twitter, mr. Trump wrote, scott, ask sally yates nfw classified information got spto the newspapers soon after she explained it to the white house. Scott, yates denied being the source of those leaks. Airlines are worried an expanded ban will discourage traness travel and will be hofficult to enforce without searching passengers individually. Ney also have concerns about moving a large number of Electronic Devices into the cargo hold as there is a small risk of fire from devices lithium ion batteries. U. S. Esis time it is the sister of the president s soninlaw. Res Major Garrett. Reporter nicole meyer, sister to white house adviser Jared Kushner, spent saturday with wealthy chinese investors asking them to help finance this new jersey real estate project a own as one journal square. Her pitch make a 500,000 investment in return for a possible u. S. Visa. Its known as the eb5 immigrant Investor Program and was renewed by President Trump the day before the beijing meeting. This is just the start of a roadshow for the Kushner Company family. Reporter New York Times reporter Javier Hernandez was at the presentation and said it included pictures of President Trump and referenced Jared Kushner specifically. I think for the chinese investors who were there, they really felt like this project was safe and secure because it had the governments support, and whether that was her intention or not, i think a lot of people walked away with that perception. Op reporter the session was r en to the public, but hernandez and other journalists were forced out of the Ritz Carlton Hotel ballroom. In a statement, the Kushner Company said meyer wanted to make clear her brother had nothing to do with this project thd it apologized if meyers y ntion of her brother was in any way interpreted as an attempt the lure investors. H attorney for kushner said he had divested from the project. White house spokesman sean spicer. Cs jared has done everything to comply with the ethics rules. That had nothing to do with him per se. He wasnt involved. Reporter those close to kushner describe this as a mistake of misunderstanding, not malice or profit motive. They say attracting eb5 investment for real estate is routine but acknowledged there ot nothing routine these days t out the kushner name or its proximity to the president. Pelley Major Garrett at the white house. Usna werner has been looking into Jared Kushners business interests, and heres what she found. A reporter looming above the hudson river across from lower manhattan, this 52story Apartment Building in new jersey, developed in part by Jared Kushner, markets one bedroom rentals for 3,500 a icnth. Donald trump licensed his name for the trump bay Street Project and his soninlaw kushner spoke cts he Ground Breaking in 2014. Our architects are here. Our lenders are here. All of our partners are here. T reporter now donald trump an president and kushner a top ,hite house aide, which means he has to disclose his assets, including his financial iterests in trump bay street, ret what does that interest amount to, and who are his partners. This presentation was put out by a firm that helps generate ntreign investment through a government immigrant visa usogram called eb5. Mi shows kushner raised wh0 million through the program, ntich lets foreigners Exchange Investment cash for green cards. Onalst all eb5 investors are chinese nationals, but the government keeps their names and idential. And seto bagdoyan, who monitors the program, says problems with some foreign eb5 investors have led to criminal investigations. You just want to buy your green card, and you would otherwise would not be qualified perhaps, you have a criminal background, youre linked to foreign intelligence services, you may be laundering dirty money. Reporter there are no allegations against kushners project, but the Confidentiality Provisions mean the public cant know whose foreign money went enter trump bay street. But Washington University law professor Kathleen Clark says the questions about kushners e vestors are not limited to st that one building. What you actually would need to know, in terms of a concern about impartiality and to whom he may owe some kind of loyalty or gratitude, isnt just the name of that organization, but also the identity of companies and individuals who have also invested in that organization and made the real estate project tessible. Reporter the Kushner Company declined to comment for this afory. After numerous inquiries, the white house did finally confirm for us that kushner still owns a stake in this building worth between 1 million and 5 million through a trust. Ae county, which includes the state capital of austin, has resisted. The governor has signed a new law banning socalled sanctuary cities. David begnaud has this. This law does not keep our community safe. In fact, it goes against public safety. Reporter sally hernandez, the sheriff of Travis County, which includes the capital of austin, has been in a standoff with Texas Governor gregg abbott over the legality of sanctuary cities, which are communities that dont entirely comply with federal immigration law. But now honoring those requests will be mandated by a new state law in texas. She and other Law Enforcement officials must carry them out after Governor Abbott signed the law sunday night on Facebook Live where he didnt have to answer questions. This law cracks down on policies like the Travis County sheriff who declared that she would not detain known criminals accused of Violent Crime. Reporter if the law goes reporter if the law goes into effect, what will you do . I will have to change my policy, because it would violate the law. Reporter the law forces sheriffs to honor requests made by the federal government to hold people already in jail who may be here illegally. Failure to do so could result in a fine, jail time, or removal of the sheriff from office. I believe that this law encourages racial profiling. Reporter Governor Abbott argues the law will make communities safer, but every major police chief in texas opposes it. Houston police chief art acevedo has tweeted Violent Crime is on the rise across our nation, and some would rather men and women in blue go after cooks and nannies than hardened criminals. The law doesnt go into effect until september 1st. Before then, the a. C. L. U. Is appealing this. The law applies to universities across texas, but it doesnt apply to churches.
