KPIX CBS Morning News November 9, 2016

Good to be with you. Im annemarie green. Well, what will go down as one of the largest upsets in u. S. Political history, cbs news projects donald trump has been elected the 45th president of the United States. Riding a populace wave of frustration with washington, trump stymied Hillary Clintons bid to become the first woman to serve in the nations highest office. And early this morning, trump told his supporters its time for the country to unify. Ive just received a call from secretary clinton. She congratulated us. Its about us. On our victory and i congratulated her and her family on a very, very hardfought campaign. I pledge to every citizen of our land that i will be president for all americans and this is so important to me. For those who have chosen not to support me in the past, of which there were a few people, im reaching out to you for your guidance and your help so that we can Work Together and unify our great country. Well, cbs news estimates trump won at least 289 electoral votes and showing surprising strength in the usually democratic upper midwest. Trump also won at least 8 of the 13 socalled battleground states, including florida, North Carolina, and ohio. Trump narrowly won the popular vote in a remarkably close race and republicans retained control of both the senate and the house. Well, the president elect told his supporters it was a movement that got him elected. Jamie yuccas reports from the Trump Victory rally. The president elect of the United States of america, donald trump. Reporter the crowd roared as donald trump made his entrance into his campaigns Election Night headquarters. I pledge to every citizen of our land that i will be president for all americans. Reporter trump pulled off wins in key battleground states tuesday night, including florida, ohio, and North Carolina. The Trump Campaign says Hillary Clinton called to concede. She congratulated us. Its about us. On our victory and i congratulated her and her family on a very, very hardfought campaign. Reporter stunned Hillary Clinton supporters wiped away tears after the democrats multiple paths to victory disappeared onebyone. Clinton failed to carry many of the battleground states president obama won in 2012. Trumps populace message resonated with working class americans who saw him as a washington outsider. Im hoping for change. Thats what i voted for. Reporter ballots are still being counted, but donald trump is looking forward to taking the oath of office. Hillary clinton conceded to donald trump but has not spoken publicly yet. Apparently before that phone call, clinton supporters were greeted by her Campaign Chairman john podesta who told the crowd to go home. Weijia jiang reports from clinton headquarters in new york city. Reporter good morning, annemarie. The emotions inside this room were tangible all through Election Night and then well into the Early Morning hours, from excitement to Nervous Energy and then a feeling of defeat when clintons Campaign Chairman john podesta came out here and stood on that stage where Hillary Clinton was hoping to make history and told the crowds to go home. He said there were races that were still too close to call and secretary clinton would not be making any comments tonight. Everybody should head home. You should get some sleep. We will have more to say tomorrow. I want you to know, i want every person in this hall to know, and i want every person across the country who supported hillary to know that your voices and your enthusiasm means so much to her and to tim and to all of us. We are so proud of you and we are so proud of her. Shes done an amazing job and she is not done yet reporter at that point, supporters started leaving right away, but even before that, people were crying. They were embracing each other and they were holding hands. You could see the disappointment on their faces and mixed in with that was shock because people were not expecting this tonight. Not even the clinton campaign. At the beginning of the night, it seemed they were confident. Aides told us she was working with a speech with her husband bill at a nearby hotel and going to come here to the Javitz Center to watch the rest of the results. That never happened and we never saw a glimpse from her and we will have to wait until later today to see what she has to stay. Reporting at clinton headquarters in midtown manhattan, back to you, annemarie. Cbs news political director John Dickerson weighed in after trumps speech on how his win of the popular vote might impact his tone now that he is heading to the white house. Reporter we have seen donald trump give a conciliatory sort of the right pitch in his speech, but those 56 million who voted for Hillary Clinton, there are a lot of them who believe he came to this position by playing on racial fears, by he was for five years the chief advocate of the idea that president obama was illegitimate because he wasnt born in the United States. There are people on the other side of this who are not going to accept this and we will see what the shape of that response will be, who becomes the voice of that response. You mentioned barack obama. He will not be the voice of that response. But who is and who does . And we have yet to see that part of the story play out. That was John Dickerson. Well, there was a large crowd outside the white house tonight. Some were trump supporters, some were not. President obama campaigned hard for Hillary Clinton. Donald trump promised to undo much of what the president accomplished. Here is Margaret Brennans take during our cbs news election special. Reporter a crowd has gathered here, scott, but the silence from the white house is deafening. President obama argued that the very fate of the republican, his words, hinged on this election and he was on the stump for his successor more than any other president in modern history. Donald trump, a man he called uniquely unfit for office, is going to deal obamas historic presidency a serious blow. Clinton had promised that she would protect his signature achievement, obamacare, which has been damaged in recent months. She had pledged to undertake immigration reform, roll out environmental protections and defend that landmark nuclear deal with iran, which trump says he is going to tear up. Supreme Court Nominee Merrick Garland doesnt look like he is going to get confirmed and lead us can a split Supreme Court. Trump said he is going to renegotiate obamas free trade deal with asia and other alliances, so this is going to make it very difficult on monday, when president obama heads to europe to try to reassure allies that america is going to stand by their defense, particularly considering that trump has made friendly overtures to russia. How is he going to explain this pledge to possibly starting trad deal with china . So this is going to be really difficult for the white house to explain away in the light of day, but, scott and norah, president obama said before the polls close that when the sun rises, america will still be the greatest nation on earth. I think its safe to say he didnt think he would wake up to this kind of result. That was Margaret Brennan at the white house.
