Intelligence picked up signs of a plot by al qaeda. A dramatic day in a cleveland courtroom as one of the women held for a decade in that house of horrors confronted her tormentor. Ariel castro got a life sentence plus 1,000 years. Most of the sex that went on in the house, practically all of it, was consensual. And snowdens waking up somewhere other than moscows main airport. Reports that talks between baseball and Alex Rodriguez to cut a deal have stalled. Major League Baseball said friday it will announce which players its penalizing for steroid use. How strong is the average bear . Pictures suggest a lot stronger than we thought. Arent you pleased at how weve grown . Uhhuh. And all that matters. Ive got some news from mr. Snowden. Welcome to cbs this morning. Charlie rose is off so Anthony Mason is with us. Great to be here. We begin this morning with a new Terror Threat from al qaeda that sproptis prompting the u. S. To take security precautions overseas. More than a dozen american embassies and consulates are being order to close this sunday. David martin is tracking developments from the pentagon. David, good morning. Good morning. U. S. Intelligence has pick up signs of an al qaeda plot and that has prompted the state department to close all its diplomatic posts in the middle east, north africa and south asia. The intelligence does not mention a specific location so all embassies and consulates that would normally be open on sunday have been ordered to close. Sunday is the start of the workweek in the muslim world. The state Department Released a statement, telling cbs news we have taken this measure out of an abundance of caution and care for our epemployees. It went on to explain, the department, when conditions warrant, take steps like this to balance our continued operations with security and safety. Embassies have started announcing the closings on their website. Israel, egypt, jordan qatar, saudi arabia, afghanistan, bangladesh and sudan. Officials say this appears to be a real plot in the making and not just the normal chatter among terrorists talking about plots they would like to carry out. The fact that so many posts are being closed reflects one, the vagueness of the intelligence and, two, the bitter memories of the four americans who were killed in that attack on the benghazi compound on september 11th last year. Thanks david. Nsa leaker Edward Snowden is spending his first full day outside the moscow airport now that he has temporary asylum in russia. He left a transit zone yesterday after living there for more than a month. In a moment well look at how washington is fuming but we start with Charlie Dagata in london. It was about six weeks ago, theyre all asking the question wheres Edward Snowden . Hes gone to ground again. His whereabouts in russia being kept secret. Were told hes in a secure location with american friends. And when hes comfortable, he may consider making an appearance to the media. This is a new picture of Edward Snowdens surprise getaway from the moscow airport thats been home for five weeks. Hes getting his first taste of freedom today or what free dopamines to a wanted highprofile man in russia. His lawyer says snoden wants to start a new life there. He said job offers are already rolling in. The yearlong asylum hes been granted forbids travel outside russia. President putin said hes only be welcome in russia if the former National Security agent stopped spilling secrets about the United States. Praised senator putin for keeping his son safe. Its the honorable thing to do. And as not just a citizen of the United States but a Global Citizen of this planet an occupant of the earth. Life in russia will be a far cry from the comforts of snowdens former home in hawaii. Although moscow is home to the most billionaires in the world, low wages for average workers mean a lower standard of living. Snowden may also struggle because he cant speak russian. And this man says snowdens options may be limited. I cant imagine in a way he will be in a suburban ghetto. I think he will live a relatively comfortable, if not entirely free, life. Not free because certainly people are going to be keeping tabs on him. Exactly. When president putin first found out the snowden issue had landed in his lap, he dismissed it saying, i prefer not to deal with these issues. Snoweden may have plenty of chances to squeal to russian intelligence agents now. Urging president obama to consider cancelling an upcoming meeting in russia. Major garrett is at the white house. Reporter when the russian government allowed snowden to land several weeks ago, the white house knew this day would come. Now russia has ignored direct pleas from president obama and the famous reset in the famous relations have been jeopardized. Lawmakers now urging a forceful white house response. President obama battered away persistent questions about snowden during a meeting with the president of yemen. Mr. Obama did not want to personalize his sense of anger and disappointment leaving that to his spokesman. We see this as an unfortunate development and we are extremely disappointed by it. One that blindsided the white house and could imperil a planned obama putin summit in moscow early next month. We are evaluating the summit in light of this. Just after snowden arrived in russia, mr. Putin tryobama tried to downplay it. I will not have one case of a suspect were trying to extradite suddenly being elevated to the point ive got to start doing wheeling and dealing and trading on a whole host of other issues. Reporter now the snowden impasse could affect all u. S. And russia discussions, especially if more surveillance links occur. On capitol hill top lawmakers urged mr. Obama to punch back. Senator john mccain said putins move constituted a, quote, deliberate effort to embarrass the United States. Adding, we cannot allow this action by putin to stand without serious repercussions. Democrat Chuck Schumer urged the president to move the g20 summit calling the situation a blow to u. S. russia relations. Russia has stabbed us in the back and each day that snowden is allowed to roam free is another twist of the knife. Reporter the g20 summit in st. Petersburg is say huge platform for russia. The 20 largest economies will be there. Far too much business for the United States to skip that event it the planned putin obama summit just before in moscow is probably not going to happen. Major garrett, thanks. Surprising comments from secretary of state john kerry about drone strikes in pakistan. And this morning the state department may be trying to walk back those words. Our Margaret Brennan is traveling with kerry. She filed this report from vienna. Reporter secretary of state john kerry left pakistan today with the message that u. S. Drone strikes will end very very soon. Pakistan considers the u. S. Policy of targeting militants with Unmanned Aircraft to be a violation of their sovereignty. He told pakistan tv i think the program will end as weve eliminated most of the threat and continue to eliminate it. Prime minister sharif had earlier appealed to him to halt the program but these comments went further than president obama who said the Drone Program would not end entirely. Hours later, the state department issued a statement, saying there is no time line for a halt and indicated the comments were the sectretarys hope, not a change in policy. In no way would we ever deprive ourselves a tool that would help us fight a threat as it arises. Reporter Margaret Brennan, vienna. A source tells cbs news major League Baseball will impose penalties related to its drug investigation by moonednday. Espn says talks between the league and Alex Rodriguez have stalled. Don dahler is at yankee stadium. Reporter a major League BaseballTeam Executive tells us more than a dozen big leelague players face suspensions for their alleged involvement. And the biggest name of course in terms of fame is Alex Rodriguez it the 38yearold has been rehabbing from a quad strain as well as hip surgery that kept him out of the season. He played a simulated game as well as had a turkoutworkout in tampa yesterday. This is his 20th season. The highest paid player in all of baseball. Punishments he faces range from a 250gape suspension or the Nuclear Option for the commissioner, a lifetime ban. The man who blew the whistle on the clinic tells our station in miami that he hopes that doesnt happen. I think it would be a shame if he got some kind of lifetime ban. Because i dont think he deserves that. I really dont think he deserves that. But mlb needs to make an example of somebody because otherwise this is just going to happen tomorrow next year following on. Reporter a source familiar with negotiations tell us monday will be the day the announcement is made. The thinking being that players whose teams are likely to make the playoffs will have fulfilled their suspension if it starts monday. Don dahler, thanks. Cleveland kidnapper ariel castro starting the first day of his 1,000year prison sentence. In court, castro apologized but he also said the fbi should have caught him earlier. He went on to describe a happy home. As Dean Reynolds reports, one of his victims set the record straight. Nobody shoulder have to go through what i went through, nor anybody else not even the worst enemy. Reporter she is 32 now, the longest held captive. Day turned into night. Night turned into day. In one photo, bolder sits with a man in clerical garb a defrocked priest who was accused of abusing teenage boyed in the 1980s. Lackluster news about the job market. 162,000 new jobs were added in july, the fewest since march. It did bring down the Unemployment Rate to 7. 4 . The lowest rate in 4 1 2 years. Jill schlesinger is with us. This is kind of a number isnt it . Really soso. Below estimates, below what weve been averaging in the last year of 190,000 jobs. Twothirds of those jobs created were really not great jobs. Theyre part time jobs. So im concerned about that piece of it. Wages down just a touch. So i think this is an interesting report in one sense. Even though weve added 1. 34 million jobs this year i think it puts the Federal Reserve in an interesting situation. We thought they were going to change their policy. This is kind a weak report. Maybe they wait till september. You think it delays any Big Decisions from the fed . It could. The fed has two different policies it is pursuing. The longterm Interest Rate policy. A lot of people thought theyd ease up on those bond purchases in september. Maybe they will wait till december. Who knows. The short term which is pegged to the Unemployment Rate well maybe that will start to change. We have to get to about 6 1 2 on the Unemployment Rate before the fed said it would actually start to increase those shortterm rates. If we keep it this rate jill, i mean thats 6. 5 target, how long does it take us to get there . A long time. Were probably not getting there till december 2014. Which is probably why the fed said were probably not going to change shortterm rates till the middle of 2014. So time will tell. What does it say at this point . That they are fine with the staffs they have and theyre not seeking to build out payrolls till the economy starts to improve more substantially. That is nothing to really celebrate at this point. How long does it take i mean, what is it going to take for them to start doing this . Theyll have to see more demand for their goods and services. If youre an employer you have to wait to see if people want your stuff. Thats the leelreal job of the employer to try to gauge that.
