We begin with a third night of american air strikes against isis in syria. Warplanes from the United States and two arab allies hit isis Oil Facilities in Eastern Syria last night. And this morning, french fighter jets bomb targets in neighboring iraq. New video from syria claimsttacks on Oil Refineries. The newest air strikes were a success. This time the u. S. And its arab partners set out to hit isis in the wallet by destroying targets which helped fund its operations. Strikes were carried out by the u. S. Air force and by aircraft from the United Arab Emirates and saudi arabia. The targets were 12 small Scale Oil Refineries much like these in the Eastern Desert in syria. According to the pentagon the refineries produce between 300 and 500 barrels of petroleum a day. Which isis use to power its own vehicles and also sold on the black market. Bringing in up to 2 million a day in revenues. Arab jets hit seven of the refineries and american aircraft the other five. A total of 18 aircraft carried out the strikes. And all of them returned safely. Along the way, one of the jets spotted an isis vehicle and attacked it as well. The strikes were about half the size of monday nights attacks which concentrated on buildings isis used to command and control its operations, as well as training areas and supply depots. Strikes on monday night also hit a separate terrorist organization known as khorasan which was believed to be plotting attacks against europe and possibly the u. S. Homeland. According to the pentagon all of the 168 weapons launched in monday nights strikes hit their targets. The pentagon says initial indications are that all 12 of the Oil Refineries were knocked out of commission. But isis still has other sources of revenues such as robbing banks and demanding ransom for kidnapping victims. Charlie. David thanks. Here in new york, president obama meets today with egypts president to discuss the air strikes in syria. On wednesday, he condemned isis and other terror organizationings in a speech to u. N. Delegates it. He used some of the toughest language of his presidency. Bill plante. Thats for sure the president may have seemed ambivalent about returning to combat in the middle east, but in his speech to the General Assembly, he committed the u. S. To an allin strategy in the battle against terrorists. No god condones this terror. No grievance justifies these actions. Reporter it was a call to the world to respond to the Successful Events of isis militants and the growing threat they represent. There can be no reasoning, no negotiation with this brand of evil. The only language understood by killers like this is the language of force. So the United States of america will work with a Broad Coalition to dismantle this network of death. Reporter five arab nations have joined the u. S. In air attacks on isis in syria. But the president called out muslims who provide support for extremism and bolstered those who preach intolerant version, of islam. Its time to end the hypocrisy of those who accumulate wealth through the Global Economy and siphon funds tos who who teach children to tear it down. Reporter also chaired a portion of the United Nations security council. The draft resolution adapted reporter where he oversaw the passage of a binding resolution to counter the threat of foreign fighters requiring countries to prosecute extremeist extremists, and take steps to prevent their arming and financing. But he acknowledging stronger steps would be necessary. Promises on paper cannot keep us safe. Lofty rhetoric and good intentions will not stop a single terrorist attack. And there was more. The president also bluntly criticized russia for its support of ukrainian separatists. This speech was intended to signal the kind of strong commitment to u. S. Leadership which he was criticized for lacking in recent months. And, today, he attending a meeting organized to address the ebola epidemic sweeping across western africa which is yet another crisis in his presidency. That is going to be a very big deal. Thank you so much. Saudi arabia says it has pushed for three years to get the u. S. Involved in syria. And it was a linchpin in forming the coalition of arab states now helping carry out air strikes. While americas focus is squarely on taking out isis the saudis quietly hope air strikes will be part of a much broader goal for forcing syrian president bashar assad out of power. We talked about that with the countrys former u. S. Ambassador, prince turkey al faisal. Are these air strikes against isis the first step in an ultimately removing assad . I dont know, but i hope they are. Because you cant simply deal with isis and not deal with assad. There were saudi warplanes involved . Absolutely. Muslims dropping bombs on muslims . Well, you know we dont consider isis as being a muslim group because of what they do to islam. But they say they are creating an Islamic State. Thats what they claim. Unfortunately, some people believe them. But their actions belie their words. You dont simply create an Islamic State by dropping peoples heads off and enforcing your opinion. Do you hope that the u. S. Will go beyond air strikes . You mean send Ground Troops . Yes. I think that if the need for it arises i hope the president will change his mind. Would saudi arabia be willing to send in Ground Troops . Look we sent in our aircraft. I dont see any reason why we shouldnt send in our Ground Troops. Wow sawyou saw what the iranians said. That this effort by your country and others was illegal in syria. What about his troops being on the ground killing syrians . This is you know the irony and, if you like the rather arrogant attitude that they give themselves the license to send troops to kill syrians but then when we try to defend the syrian people, they say that is illegal. Thats unacceptable. As you know charlie, iran and saudi arabia are longtime rivals. But their Foreign Ministers met this week here in new york. And im told that irans president , rouhani, who you spoke to could actually visit the kingdom soon something that prince turkey said would be a welcome step. After that meeting between the two Foreign Ministers, the Iranian Foreign minister, this could be the beginning of a new era in the relationship. Yeah this is just the beginning of this campaign indeed. In South Carolina investigators are studying dash cam video that shows a White State Police trooper shooting an unarmed black man during a routine traffic stop. Authorities say the shooting by the trooper, Sean Groubert was not justified. The trooper was checking an alleged seat belt violation. Can i see your license please . Get out of the car. Get out of the car. [ gunfire ] get on the ground get on the ground. I just grabbed my license. You said get my license. I grabbed my license. Right there. Thats my license. Right there. Put your hands behind your back. Put your hands behind your back. Put your hands behind your back. Put your hands behind your back. What did i do sir . Are you hit . I think so. I cant feel my leg. I dont know what happened. I just grabbed my license. Why did you why did you shoot me . Well you dove head first back into your car. Im sorry, i didnt know. Then you jumped back out. The victim levar jones, was struck in the hip. The trooper was fired and charged yesterday with assault and battery. Tony stewart will not face charges for his role in the death of another driver. A grand jury says theres no reason to believe stewart commit add crime. Don dahler is here with new details. Don, good morning. The grand jury examined two different videos of the accident and listened to testimony from about two dozen witnesses, including other drivers from the track that night. In the end they decided stewart should not be charged with either manslaughter in the second greer or criminal negligent homicide. According to the District Attorney kevin ward jr. Was under the influence of marijuana at the time of the incident. The levels that were determined were enough to impair judgment. And what he did moments before he was fatally struck by Tony Stewarts car weighed heavily on the grand jury. The fact that kevin ward was observed running basically down twothirds of the track into a hot track in the middle of other cars that were still racing played a big, big factor in their decision. The grand jury also viewed a second video shot by a racetrack camera. The videos actually did not demonstrate any aberrational driving by stewart until the point of impact with ward. Prior to that his course was pretty straight. Stewart didnt speak publicly until nearly three weeks after the august accident. This is been one of the toughest tragedies both professionally and personally and this is something that will affect my life forever. Stewart called the investigation thorough adding kevin ward jr. s family and friends will always be in my thoughts and prayers. Tony stewart wards mother tells cbs this morning she still blames stewart, saying the threetime nascar champ was trying to intimidate her son by accelerating and slidzing his car towards him. The focus should be on mr. Stewart, not my son, she said. This matter is not at rest and we will pursue all remedies in fairness to kevin. In the wake of the accident nascar adopted ruling saying unless there was a fire or other emergency, a driver involved in a crash must remain inside his car until track or safety officials arrive.
