Welcome to cbs this morning. As you wake up in the west, we have breaking news in the war against isis. American war planes are backing kurdish troops fighting to recapture a strategic city in northern iraq. The United States military Officials Say american advisors also helped the kurds plan the attack. Sinjar sits along a key supply rout. Isis captured the city more than a year ago and is accused of using murder and rape to terrorize the local population. Charlie dagata is on the ground with Kurdish Forces. Reporter good morning. Some of what you see there is smoke rising from a series of air strikes targeting isis militants inside and around the city of sinjar. Weve lost count of the number of air strikes that have been launched in that vicinity overnight. Theyve been firing artillery into the city. This is all part of a major offensive to retake sinjar. We understand 7,500 Kurdish Forces are closing in on three sides of the city, trying to push isis out. And one of the reasons, it sits between the two isis strongholds of raqqah in syria and mosul in iraq. So theyre trying to cut off supply routes between those two cities. But its not going to be easy. Kurdish forces that we spoke to said they fear snipers. Now the city may be rife with bobby traps, homemade bombs beneath the homes and inside buildings. And theres always the concern of suicide bombers, if not on foot, then traveling in vehicles packed with explosive. Norah . A line of powerful storms is churning near the great lakes. At least ten tornadoes have been reported. Rain and wind pummelled parts of idaho overnight night. Adriana diaz has more. Meanwhile, powerful winds tore off half their roof, blew their garage to pieces, and pulled down power lines like this one. There were multiple tornadoes reported across the state. This powerful ef1 tornado tore through this city in iowa, as a dangerous mix of heavy rains and violent winds blasted the state on wednesday. Its terrifying. Your house shakes and you think its going to come off. You start praying, crying, whatever, and thinking about your family. Whoa reporter the howling winds toppled trees, tore down power lines, and flipped over semitrucks. People who live in the area were shaken. It sounded like more than one Freight Train put together. I never heard a sound like that in my life. Reporter the storm system stretched to missouri, fueled these lightning strikes over chicago, and blew the roof off of this home in kansas. Its gone. So now, you know, all i can really do is, ive got to fix it. Pulling into my driveway. Reporter in oklahoma, wind gusts of 60 Miles Per Hour whipped several wildfires out of control, burning down this home and forcing evacuations, as firefighters struggled to keep up with the flames. The wind was originally out of the west, blowing to the east. And it just it didnt matter what we did. It wasnt going to stop the fire. Reporter the same severe storm system dumped more than a foot of snow in parts of the rockies and blanketed roads in nebraska. The couple that lives here says theyre meeting with Insurance Agents today. Now, as for these winds, theyre headed east, hitting the great lakes, ohio valley, and Northern Plains today. We have 18 states that are under a high wind warning or wind advisory, all the way from montana stretching east towards new york and pennsylvania. Big storm, 45 to 55mileperhour gusts, will cause scattered outages. Airport delays from the Northern Plains to the midwest. Behind it, chilly, cold air with gusty wind to the northeast tomorrow. Meanwhile, rain and snow coming into the pacific northwest, 6 to 10 inches of rain with downpours and flood warnings in effect through sunday. River flooding is likely in these areas. Thank you, danielle. This morning the federal Aviation Administration is looking into a series of laser strikes on aircraft. Three local news helicopters in new york and new jersey reported lasers were flashed at them. Kris van cleave is in washington with the alltoofamiliar details. Kris, good morning. Reporter good morning. This is the type of laser pointer behind the record surge on aircraft this year. So far the faa has received 5300 reports, thats far more than last year. Theyre coming in at a rate of more than 18 a day. The faa says wednesday was a busy night nationwide. Three news helicopters were targeted today, including our own chopper 2. The crew board chopper 4 became the strike target of a l strike today. Reporter three local tv news helicopters reported being struck by dangerously bright green lasers. The attacks were caught on camera by two of the crews. Pilot and reporter joe beerman from our new york station wcbs says the lasers hit his cockpit several times. When we got lasered, at the same time the nypd was right next to us. Reporter news crews guided police to the location of the lasers. Two suspects were taken into custody. Just after 7 30 last night, air Traffic Controllers in dallas warned pilots after three different planes, a Southwest Airlines boeing 737, a Virgin America airbus 319, and a private business jet were all hit by a laser while preparing to land at love field. You want to turn away from the light source. Except if its a helicopter, you cant turn away from the light source. Its incapacitating for a few moments. Reporter police pilot kevin cook patrols the skies over los angeles, a particular hotbed for laser strikes. Its become such a problem, all 88 airborne lapd officers have been issued special protective glasses. Now, no one was hurt last night. But pointing one of these at an aircraft is a crime. Federal investigators plan to start removing the chartered jet that crashed into an apartment complex in akron, ohio. Tuesdays crash killed all seven passengers and two crew members on the plane. Investigators have sent the cockpit voice recorder and sent it to washington for analysis. Theyre taking a look at the turbine engines as well as maintenance records for the aircraft and weather conditions at the time of the accident. All these things are clues as to what might have happened to cause this plane to fall out of the sky. Surveillance video shows the charter jet skimming the tree line, then crashing, sparking a massive fire and destroying up to four home. It was very rainy, foggy, overcast, grounds wet, power lines on the ground. Reporter on wednesday, investigators examined the charred rubble. The left wing hit the ground first and left a witness mark. Then the aircraft hit half of an apartment building, destroying it before running up an embankment. Women are suing a Pharmaceutical Company over a packaging error over what they call unplanned pregnancies. Jan crawford is in washington with the packaging accident linked to the births. So the women claim that the Pharmaceutical Company, a subsidiary of Endo Pharmaceuticals and its manufacturers, distributed defective Birth Control pills in 2011 when they saw caused 115 accidental pregnancies. The Company Recalled the pills when it was discovered that rows of pills were put in the box upside down, causing the women to take placebo pills when they should have been taking hormone pills. The case seeks millions of dollars in damages, in some cases the cost of raise to go adulthood the children born from these allegedly unplanned pregnancies. Cbs news reached out to representatives from the Pharmaceutical Company and they declined to comment on the ongoing litigation. Both companies emphasized that Patient Safety and product quality is their top priority. Now, Endo Pharmaceuticals also told us they have only been able to confirm one defective pack ever sold to a patient. Gayle . You can certainly understand why some of the women would be very upset. One of the attorneys in the case said it was just heartwrenching for some of these women. He said for example one client was in the military, she had to give up her child for adoption because she was getting ready to be deployed. Others had to drop out of school. This morning investigators in San Francisco are trying to find out why a gunman pointed a rifle at a hospital, then fired at police. The man aimed the rifle yesterday afternoon from a nearby construction site. Police say he shot at officers when they confronted him. They returned fire and killed him. New jersey investigators this morning are trying to learn if a gas leak caused an explosion that killed one person and leveled a duplex. Surveillance video shows the moment the blast ripped through the roof in elizabeth, outside of new york. 14 people went to the hospital. Two are in Critical Condition with burns. Witnesses say the explosion was felt blocks away. The mayor says it flattened the building, quote, like a pancake. This morning the showdown over race on College Campuses is spreading to new york state. About a thousand students at Ithaca College yesterday walked out of class over concerns about racial injustice. They are demanding the resignation of College President thomas rochon. They say hes failed to address racial intolerance including a thugthemed party and insensitive remarks by campus police. I feel like this campus is coming together. In response, the president created a chief diversity officer position on tuesday. Protestors say thats not enough. This week protestors at the university of missouri forced the resignation of the president and the chancellor. And yale students also accuse School Administrators of insensitivity to racial tensions.
