KPIX CBS This Morning Saturday December 14, 2013

Trek with wounded veterans. All that and much more on cbs this Morning Saturday, december 14th, 2013. Captioning funded by cbs and welcome to the weekend. We also have some distinguished visitors here in studio 57 this morning fresh off his two grammy nominations. Gregory porter is here to perform. His voice is compared to greats like lou rawls and marvin gaye. Plus chef martin lever inton who got a psychology degree but followed his heart to the kitchen as a very funny chef. And to talk about his generation and mine the baby boomers, the biggest if not the best ever. Sadly we begin yet again with the investigation of a school ashooting attack. Arapahoe high school in centennial, colorado, is not all that far from columbine high scene of a massacre in 1999. Its also not far from last years shoot at a theater in aurora, colorado. Barry petersen is with us this morning. Good morning, barry. Reporter good morning. This is going to be the day to figure out what went on inside the school and authorities promise they will go carefully and slowly in their hunt for answers. The scene was sadly familiar. Students fleeing their school with hands in the air so they could be checked by police to make sure they were not armed and were not part of the shooting. Officials say student karl hello veryson pierson walked in at 12 33, openly carrying a shotgun. He was apparently hunting one particular teacher, said Arapahoe County sheriff greyson robinson. Our initial investigation is causing us to believe that this shooting was the result of revenge on the part of the shooter because of a confrontation or a disagreement between the shooter and the teacher. Reporter the teacher heard he was being targeted and left apparently trying to draw the shooter out of the school. The shooter opened fire and critically wounded one student. Students like Peter Strauss who heard the shots took cover as the school went into lockdown. Reporter what did the students in your classroom with their cell phone and texting. They made sure their parents knew what was going on and texted them and said they loved them. None of them called because they wanted to be quiet. Reporter did you text your mom . Yeah. Reporter what did you say . Told her that i loved her. Reporter it took minutes to find that karl pierson killed himself. He was a bright student and a gifted debater from a religious family that attends bible study sessions. The mystery is why he did this. It takes very little to cause someone to do something as outrageous as happened at Arapahoe High School today. Reporter the sheriff says that pierson also had two molotov cocktails. One went off causing smoke and confusion. Police found the other one and disarmed it. Anthony and vinita . Thank you. Today marks one year since the Sandy Hook School shooting that took 26 lives. An verse that the community has asked to keep private. The president and the first lady will mark the day with a moment of silence at the white house. Reporter on thursday at the National Cathedral in washington, a vigil and remembrance ceremony was held for victims of gun violence, but in newtown itself there will be no ceremony. The community decided against a public commemoration today and respectfully asked the media to stay away. Please respect our need to be alone and to be quiet and have that personal time to continue on our journey of grief in a way that serves us. We were hurt very badly last year, as you all know. We dont need to be reminded. We dont need to relive it. Reporter instead of a vigil, the families have asked the residents of newtown to mark the day by placing candles in their windows. Each candle symbolizeing the commitment to turn the loss and violence into kindness to one another. The community has also created a website, my sandy hook family. There people can read about the victims, post remembrances and donate to charities affected. One of those charities is the sandy ground project, an organization committed to building 26 playgrounds dedicated to each of the children killed in the newtown shootings. The 15th playground opened just this week on what would have been josephine gays eighth birthday. She would have loved it. A playground on the beach. What could be better. Reporter another construction project is about to begin, a new school for the students of sandy hook elementary. It will be built on the same site as the Previous School which the town voted to demolish after the tragedy. Its expected to open in 2016. And for more on sandy hook one year later, go to remembering sandy hook at c b scbs this morningcbsthismorning. Com cbsthismorning. Com. Winter weather bringing snow and ice all the way across the state. Snow began falls last name in columbia missouri. In philadelphia road crews are racing for whats to come. Snow is expected to come mid morning. Theyre expecting a third storm to hit the area this week. Drivers are topping off their tanks and loading up on rock salt and other supplies. Now lets get another overview of how long its going to be around. Arab fisher of wbztv. Anthony and vinita, good morning. We have rain across the south. This is how we look this morning. A tight curl right here down toward the southern part of missouri. You see the snow already starting to stretch into the northeast. In white, winter storm warnings for a lot of americans this weekend. In purple, reaching back through the state of missouri. So many affected many shoveling as we head through the next couple of days. As we head toward this evening, the storm will be moving across detroit toward pennsylvania. The heavy rain right down the i95 corridor. If youre traveling, right before the big holidays. As you head toward the overnight, the snow will be toward the interior northeast. Initially snow will change over to rainfall there. Then by tomorrow morning, heavy snow in boston. By tomorrow afternoon, the whole storm is moving out to sea. How much damage are we talking about here . Total snowfall wide swath, 3 to 6. A big area of 6 to 12 inches of snow. Most of it. Light and fluffy stuff. Not great for travel. Anthony, back to you. A kansas man is in federal custody this morning accused of plotting to bomb a wichita airport, a plot he thought was supported by al qaeda. Jeff pegues is in washington with more on that. Good morning. Good morning, anthony. He faces life in federal prison if convicted. Investigators say the 58yearold was taken into custody as he tried to drive away in what he believed was a van loaded with bombs. The bomb was a fake and they were not al qaeda operatives. They were undercover fbi employees who had infiltrated the alleged plot. It was since early summer of 2013. He made statements that he was resolved to commit an act of violent jihad against the United States. Some of those statements appeared in court documents. In one exchange he wrote brothers like Osama Bin Laden and Anwar Al Awlaki have become great inspirations to me. Prosecutors say he took various steps to study his plot. He studied the layout and Access Points and researched flight schedules to see when it would be the busiest. He said my greatest fear would be not being able to care out the carry out the operation because i was set up. Just days before his arrest he left this letter for his family. By the time you read this, i will, if everything went as planned, have been murdered in the path of fal la. In past operations like this one the fbi has been criticized for aiding a wouldbe terrorist with little actual ability. Anthony and vinita . Jeff pegues in washington. Thanks, jeff. New details are emerging about a former iowa contractor who vanished in iran six years ago reportedly on an up sanctioned spy mission. The Obama Administration is under pressure to find Robert Levinson and bring him home. Cbs correspondent john miller was an assistant with the fbi when levinson disappeared. What a muddy case this has become, john. It has. This fact that he was working under contract for the cia is something that the u. S. Government, that the fbi, that the lever inson family was desperate to keep out of the press from the beginning of this case, but at this point, think the family is taking a different tact on this. I mean i think by now, their point of view is this guy was on working for the United States overseas and this is just not a top priority. Hes been gone seven years we know theres great people in the state department who thing about this and care about this, the same in the fbi, the same in the agency, but this is not this is not at the top of heap of things that theyre bringing with iran especially at a time when they have a new dialogue. So i think at this point the family has changed their tact on that to say, hey, this is our guy, what are we doing . The cia reportedly paid the family 2. 5 million to keep quiet, john. So does this change that . I think that the ciacia paid the family 2. 5 million along the lines of he was working for us hes being held and you are a bread winner and that may be our fault. It was interesting to me that initially they were denying this until the emails came forward. What work was he doing in iran . That is part of being bob levinson. Bob levinson is a very interesting guy. He was an incredibly talented fbi agent. He specialized in organized crime on the five families in new york city and then moved on to the russianyuussian mob and then retired and worked for private companies, private entities. One of them being the cia. He would go to different place, expert in Money Laundering expert in interviewing people and eliciting information. One of the things that the cia liked about him is he came up with different products when he tasked research for another country. He had a lot of things going. Part of what he was doing in dubai was being involved in counterfeit networks and cigarette rings. The trip to iran was different. What is the next step in trying to get him home . I think this disclosure jumpstarts that. There are two things. For the u. S. It makes them uncomfortable. He was under contract for the cia. For iran they say they never had them. They can go from a narrative where we kidnapped an innocent businessman to hey, we caught a spy which means the calculus there becomes who does america have under arrest and in jail that we kwamt and now you get into the conversation of doing a straight trade. We should mention three analysts were fired over this and it changed a little bit of the protocol also. It didnt so much change the protocol as they were fired for not going by the exists protocol. And after that they really took the hammer down on tightening those rules that already existed. But the basic of that vinita was the Analysis Division does analysis and they contract people for research to feed into analysis. The Operations Division of the cia runs operations and that means case officers in the field recruit agents nchl this case the Analysis Division was using a researchers as an agent and he got jammed up and they got stuck with that so three people were fired over the case. John miller thanks for joining us this morning. Thanks for having me. In south africa today the remains of Nelson Mandela begins a journey home. Allen pizzey is liven there there. Allen, good morning. Reporter good morning, anthony. The plane is carried the body. The flagdraped coffin came out the back of the plane in full military honors. It will be placed in a hearse and driven around the town making two stops so people can pay their last respects and then they will make their way down a highway thats been closed off down here to qunu. A lot of people have been lining that route so they can say their final farewell. It will go to mandelas traditional the house he built, the house he loved the most. You may be able to see it behind me amongst the tents. Theres a screen so people who cant fit into the large dome where the funeral will be held can watch it. The journey began very early this morning at an aur base this morning where they made a very long speech detailing the history of the African Congress which were the ones who fought against the apartheid. Zuma has been accused of turning this into a Political Party type of event. There were huge crowds. You can see Nelson Mandelas widow graca machel openly weeping and his exwife winnie. Because its an interesting combination of state funeral, military honors and traditional. Each time his body is moved, clan elders go beside the coffin and grow an aromatic herb thats associated with cleansing and they talk to mandelas body as if hes sleeping. Theyre speaking to his spirit and explain whats going on next. Even if that doesnt happen he was baptized a methodist, hes still the cause, a man of the people, over 7 million. His spirit has to know where its going or it will not rest at peeft with his ancestors. All of that is long and a very detailed process. Very, very interesting and very very moving. Anthony . Allen pizzey. Thank you. Tomorrow on face the nation, Bob Schieffer will have a final look at his life legacy and the historic importance of Nelson Mandela. Hell also discuss the budget deal with john mccain and Richard Durbin a democrat of illinois. Theres a lot going on in space this weekend including chinas first attempt to land a robot explorer on the moon. A startling discovery on one of saturns moon and a possible spacewalk at the International Space system to fix the cooling system. Lets start with the space station. How serious is the problem . Its not sirous. Keep in mind youve got six paem living in a confined space with a lot of equipment running. Its going go get warm in there. You need cooling loops to take care of thafrmt they have cooping loop a and cooling loop b. Cooling loop a has broken down and theyre running on cooling loop b. Its happened five times in the last seven years. Its something they expect. It sounds like it took three spacewalks to install it. Thats right. Is that whats going to happen . It could be. Theyre trying for a software fix which is always a great idea because theres great risk of going outside. Better to stay indoors in space. If you set it on the football field, it would be as large as a football field, so its a mavis hung of hardware and the assumption was every now and then youre going to need people to go outside and look under the hood. The second story, and this really fascinates me chinas first lunar propose scheduled to land on the moon this weekend. Why is that . China thats the big dog. The reason theyre the big dog is they chose to go to the moon. That was a word president kennedy used when they said well go to the moon. This is their Third Lunar Mission and this is going to be a probe which is really when you get to get down and play in the lunar moon. The other thing is the images. Theyre beautiful. Theyre beautiful and they tell a very beautiful story. Its filled with hydrocarbons, all the goodies you need to make life and there are legs on the surface of titan, particularly on the north pole. Theyre not filled with water but methane and ethane. They show what the earth would have looked like if we had put it in the freezer right behalf life emerged. The news from europa the moon over europa has a water ocean gurgling it. Its salty, almost amniotic. What the Hubble Space Telescope just found was a geyser coming out of the moon 100 miles into the sky. Just a magnificent image in a magnificent world. Speaking of magnificent, the meteor shower. What makes it so . Its ghorjs. Its eye candy. We get this hail of particles every year. We know that its coming. We know when its going to half. Its nice to know we have something to show for it. Always fascinating. Jeffrey, thank you. Its time to show you some of this mornings headlines. The New York Times says Cantor Fitzgerald has reached a property settlement. The amount not disclosed. 658 of its employees were killed when an mernl Airlines Plane struck the canter fitzgerald at the top of the building. Officials say thousands of applicants are receiving inaccurate assignments or being given incorrect denials which hamper the process of choosing a plan. The Financial Times of london reports Close Encounters between a u. S. Navy warship and a chinese vessel. The navy said it had to make a quick turch last week while making a visit. It came as joe biden was visiting beijing and while they flex their muscles is. The new yorker say ss they were given pink slips as part of a budget cut. Mega millions hopefuls will have to wait until next week. There were no winners in last nights 425 million. Its now expected to increase to 551 million. That would be a christmas present. It is about 22 minutes after the hour. And now heres a look at the weather for your weekend. Coming up the final strike moments of arizonas Granite Mountain hotshots. See just released images of 19 heroic firefighters who died in a wildfire last summer. And later, getting to the south pole isnt easy, especially when you are walking and pulling a sled full of supplies. But prince harry did it. Youre watching cbs this Morning Saturday. South pole isnt easy, south pole isnt easy, coming up a group of brave kids take a trip to the north pole to meet santa himself. Of course, it takes a little magic. Well be right back. This is cbs this Morning Saturday. Charlie and i were just talking about how hard it must have been to spend a decade in prison having been wrongly convicted. The idea of losing your freedom is a terrible terrible thought. How did you cope . What did you miss the most . I just missed knowing that i had all these opportunities that were gone, you know. My whole 20s were gone and i coped by learning and educating myself every day. I went in as a 19yearold child basically and i realized that i didnt want to come out as that 19yearold child, wh
