As two helicopters worked in tandem carrying bags of rocks to fill holes in the oroville dams emergency spillway authorities have lifted an Evacuation Order that forced nearly 200thousand people from their homes. Sot kory honea, butte county sheriffand while authorities believe the risk of a catastrophic collapse off the dams emergency spillway has been averted, the sheriff of butte county warned residents they must remain on alert. Sot in addition to filling the holes in the emergency spillway, the department of Water Resources has increased the amount of water released from the primary spillway. A park usually alongside the water but a park where the Welcome Center is now almost completely submerged. Sot to see it fully submerged like that is pretty scary. Fish hatchery toopretty scary. Theres a fear that this water will affect more than just the swings. This area flooded back in 1996 and many communities downstream eventually suffered. Sot so you have the sacramento overflowing, you have us overflowing here. Theyre still letting all this water out 100,000 cubic feet per second so whats gonna happen down there in sacramentosot just a few weeks ago donny and i we were setting up bounce over there. No right over there big huge bounce houses in the field over there for a birthday party. Just a couple weeks ago. While most are happy to go home some are not yet returning. Others surprised the mandatory Evacuation Order was dropped. Sot they cant say for sure if were safe or not and i dont blame them but i thought maybe theyd wait until after the burst of rain until saying everyone could come back into town but i dont know so were kinda on edge. Sot just waiting praying hoping that were all safe and that the spillway holds up hehe. With the all clear the thousands of people who were evacuated are now making their way home. With more rain expected this week, residents are wondering if heading home this soon is a premature move. Sot i dont think were out of the thick of it yet. Once it starts raining again, its like a false sense of security. Once it starts raining again people are going to be freaking out standupthe level of stress this weekend was pretty intense. More rain in the forecast commuters in the north bay endured another day of detouring around a flood prone section of highway 37. That roadway has been closed for most of the past few months and now caltrans is stepping up efforts to get it back into service. Kron4s Charles Clifford looked into weather crews think they can get the flooding problem fixed before the next round of rain. Natsits the detour that wont go away. Sotits a little bit of a painfor yet another day, commuters in marin had to grind their way along the atherton avenue detour in order to get around a flood prone section of highway 37. Natsbut what makes today unique is that 37 is actually water free. Caltrans is keeping the route shutdown so contractos can move in heavy equipment and start making some short term improvements that will hopefully will keep future flood waters at bay. To start, crews are taking core samples of the road to see if the persistent flooding has done any damage. Sotthat way we can examine the pavement, find out what the damages are and the best way to repair them. After studying the samples, caltrans may add several inches of asphat to the highway ,in order to raise the roadway above the flood waters. They are also going to build a concrete and steel wall along the side of the east bound lanes. The hope is that the barrier will stop or at least reduce the flooding. Sotit wont solve the flooding but it will make it less bad. Crews will also be replacing old drain pipes with larger pipes to help the water flow away fastersotso these are mostly short term, inexpensive things we think will. Again its not going to eliminate flooding but it when it does happen it wont be as bad. For drivers that have been stuck on the atherton detour these past weeks, a fix cant come soon enough. Sotas long as it actually gets done. Sotall i can do is hope it gets better. Crews are working to clear a mudslide that is blocking part of highway 17. Highway 17 has had its share of problems over the past week. Work on the slide came to a halt last thursday. After an accident involving a sub contractor killed one worker and injured another. A new safety plan is now in place. But the lane closures will continue indefinitely. Officials say, virtually all other alternative routes are affected by mudslides.
