Short span of time. Even after reopening the roadway more than 4 hours later,we saw Little Pockets of smoke and a firefighter here and there, manning the field. A brush fire on San Bruno Mountain quickly spread more than 40 acres sending plumes of smoke into the sky. The deputy fire chief says it started along the hillside corridor and in minutes, went from a one alarm to a 4 alarm blaze hot, dry conditions plus the steep terrain thats out there, it moved pretty fast moving from the initial fire. Reporter one neighbor captured the smoke as it filled the streets. It was also visible miles away. Heres video from a viewer that was driving on the 101. And here, raj naicker grabbed his camera when he heard the crackling outside his house. I could feel the heat from it. It went up and then i guess theres too much dirt over here so it didnt come this way, and the wind was blowing up that way. We heard an explosion and the power went on and off a few times. Reporter a good stretch of hillside boulevard was closed to traffic for 4 2 hours as crews combed the hill to ensure there were no more pockets of smoke and flames. Although the cause of the fire is being investigated, officials warn people should be fire concious s cigarette and things like that, plus hot dry temperatures and hot dry brush equals 4 alarm fire reporter there were 10 agencies involved with getting the fire under control, including an air attack team that helped fight the blaze from above. And within 30 minutes, it was a fouralarm fire. It grew so quickly, residents in the area were very worried it could get out of control quickly. Kron4s Philippe Djegal is live also in South San Francisco. And philippe give us some the emotions the residents told you about possibly leaving their homes. O reporter john. Cal fire says at one point. About 100 homes were threatened. The chief says they were in the path of the fire. One man who lives less than a block away from these mountains. Says he was terrified. If it was as if there were two different spots that are on fire. And i said to my neighbor that we have to get out of. For reporter wolffe lobo says he and a neighbor made the decision to leave because he says the flames were so close to his home. Lobo picked up his dog and watched the Fire Fighting efforts from a distance. Cal fire says it never called for any mandatory evacuations. But had engines in place near homes. In case the fire jumped across hillside boulevard. There is always a chance for that. Reporter lobo returning to his home about two hours after the start of the fire. He says he heard a loud noise before the hill went up in flames. There was a pop. And i heard a lot of Different Things and the brush and i saw the smoke. Reporter what did he think it was . I had no idea but i was pretty sure that it was a fire. Reporter evacuated home voluntarily hillside boulevard has now reopened to traffic. The family has had vigils, a march from the Oakland Police Department Headquarters to city hall. And today a Community Motorcycle ride to show that young daphne is still close to peoples minds. Leaving the rest of the show in question now we know there will be no parade of ships under the Golden Gate Bridge. No snowbirds in the sky. No air force f22 raptor leaving nothing for the million plus spectators along the waterfront to enjoy. The reason for grounding the popular event. Budget cuts. Sequestration stopped the blue angles and parade of ships. It it just too expensive. The fleet week website does indicate the humaniarian assistance and Disaster Response events will go in october. Including, a celebration of military dogs and an art show by veterans. Though that is nothing compared to the spectacular sights and sounds fleet week has dazzled San Francisco with for decades. When i spoke with fleet week organizers. They told me. They are very disappointed to cancel fleet week. But they are working now to try and bring it back for 2014.
