Nice with no major problems. The traffic continues to look very good. Weve been looking at 580 in the valley, westbound 580 traffic usually gets busy coming in over the altamonte pass. Right now it looks good over to Castro Valley where traffic is light on 880. At 430 lets go back to the desk. We begin with developing news from San Fransisco. Police are investigating the suspicious death of a baby. Alex savidge joins us from San Fransisco General Hospital with the mystery surrounding this tragedy. Alex. Reporter police say a woman brought her baby 7 months old here to San Fransisco General Hospital early this morning where that child was later pronounced dead and police are investigating this as a suspicious death they say. The child arrived at the hospital just about 12 30 this morning, not long after that, the medical examiner was called out. Now police will only say this was a 7monthold baby. We dont know at this point if it was a boy or a girl, and the cause of death at this point remains unclear. We did, however, see several San Fransisco Police Detectives who were out here at San Fransisco general in the hospital parking lot. They were focused in on a white car short timing a parked right outside of the emergency room. Its unclear who that car belongs to but police tell us they have homicide investigators involved in this case, and they are trying to piece together exactly what happened and how this child ended up dead. They are interviewing the babys mother and talking with family members. Detectives telling me they dont have much information. At this point the investigation is in its early stages. Todays contract talks come after perhaps the most encouraging sign that the two sides may be moving closer to a deal just days before this weeks critical strike deadline. Late yesterday b. A. R. T. Unions announced they would not issue a 72 hour strike notice for friday morning. We do not want a strike. We want that to be made perfectly clear. We understand the disruption. We understand the impact of everybody in the bay area, and we want it clear that we are not intending to do that. We want a deal. The 72hour strike notice is not required by law. However, Union Workers did give notice before the b. A. R. T. Strike in july and the pending strike in august. The San Fransisco bay ferry is getting ready to expand service if b. A. R. T. Workers do walk off the job friday morning. Later today the Ferry Service will announce its schedule for increased Service Across the bay in the event of a strike. The bay area commuters packed the ferries during the last b. A. R. T. Strike in july. Theres new evidence showing just how many people use b. A. R. T. To get around. The Transit Agency reports more than 444,000 passengers rode b. A. R. T. Trains just on friday when there were two big events. Thats the fifth higher ridership day ever. They attribute it to the as, fans taking it to the Oakland Coliseum and the Bluegrass Festival in golden gate park. If you drive through the cal decot tunnel, youll notice a change. Caltrans will turn on new traffic lights at about 10 30 this morning in the third bore. Theyll stay green for ten days while crews test ten new inner tunnel traffic signals. It will go into Service Later this year. When activated the lights will be able to turn yellow and red in response to accidents, stalls or other traffic delays. New this morning, firefighters in Santa Cruz County are still on the scene of a destructive fire that damaged two homes. It occurred around 1 00 this morning. So far there are no reports of injuries but the fire briefly forced the evacuation of the neighborhood. The red cross is also providing shelter for the families forced out of their homes. So far theres no word on what caused the fire. Time now is 4 34. The u. S. Da says raw chicken processed at three foster farms facilities in Central California is the likely source of a salmonella outbreak. The outbreak has spread to 18 states but most of the cases are in california. Foster farms says its products are safe to eat if properly handled and fully cooked. Those people who have low immune system or those people that actually have kids or elderly and kids are particularly at risk. Now the affected packages contain the usda marked p6137, p6137a, and p7632. Meantime foster farms released a statement saying in part we take food safety very seriously. When the incidence of illness link today salmonella increased we wanted to know why and have worked quickly to implement additional controls. The government could default on its debt next week if Congress Fails to raise the borrowing limit. Senate democrats republicans say any deal to raise the debt limit must also lower the cost of entitle. Programs like medicare and Social Security. They shut down the government. Now they say were going to threaten the credit worthiness of the United States of america and possibly the world economy. The president should be doing what bill clinton did in 1995 and calm these people over the white house sit down, having a conversation. The white house says the president prefers a longterm debt ceiling increase but has not ruled out asking for a shortterm increase. The Government Shutdown is having an impact on Small Businesses that rely on spending from federal workers. The owner of city bloom flower shop in oakland says sales are down 20 from a week ago. Thats because most of the stores regular customers work at the Federal Building right across the street. A lot of the people, the regular people that come in to just buy flowers for themselves for their desk or for gifts. It just feels lonely. It feels lonely, and it feels very hurtful. The house has passed a measure to retroactively pay hundreds of thousands of furloughed federal employees, but many say they dont know how long theyll have to wait for those checks. Happening now, a group of Homeless People and their advocates are camped out in albany after being told theyll be evicted from a waterfront park. A few dozen people set up an overnight camp in protest. They are fighting the citys decision to start enforcing no camping laws later this month at the park known as the albany bulb. If they want to kick out their Homeless People from where theyve told their Homeless People they can live for years they should have somewhere else to put their Homeless People instead of sidewalks or other towns. This is an ongoing situation that were trying to find caring and Compassionate Solutions for. City leaders are working to relocate the homeless through a partnership with the nonprofit berkeley food and housing project. Today San Carlos City leaders will go before the California Public utilities commission, the agency that oversees pg e. The mayor and others will express their growing safety concerns over a natural gas pipeline that runs across the city. On friday san carlos declared a state of emergency and got a court order ordering pg e to shut down the pipeline. Today the city will insist that pipeline remain shut down until pg e can guarantee no one is in danger. We have isolated the line, and the line is not in active service. We do believe we are complying with the courts order. How much information do they have on their own pipe . I dont think they have very much. At least they havent given it to us. San carlos sought the court order after receiving a copy of an internal pg e email. They expressed concern the pipeline could cause an explosion. Time now is 4 40. Happening now in san jose, police are on the scene of a crash. Police tell janine de la vega a driver fell asleep at the wheel, hit several cars and crashed near an apartment. Janine joins us live with the latest. Reporter yes, im here on Camden Avenue near donna lane, and you can see theres a lot of shattered glass and debris behind me. This is what was left of an accident that happened that caused a lot of damage here. A pickup truck that you see over there has gone right and hit this building right over here. I cant tell if theres actually a hole there, but were told by police that it didnt actually enter the building, but it did shake up the people who were sleeping inside. We were told by Police Officers that the driver of that car apparently admitted to falling asleep at the wheel. He was coming down camden here in the northbound lanes, and he hit three parked cars that were two were on camden, another one was on donna lane. So right now those owners of those cars, you know, again they had a rude awakening and woke up to finding all sorts of damage on their car. The driver were told is not being arrested. Were not sure whats happening with him, but heres what one of the one of the owners of the damaged cars had to tell us. He looked a little tired. He said hed fallen asleep coming around this corner, and i dont know. Veered off the road and woke up in front of the house. So it was a third time this has happened since ive lived here for four years. Weve had three vehicles hit, two totaled. So. Reporter a lot of frustrated car owners here as well as people who got a rude awakening this morning. You can see there is a work crew out here dealing with the damage to the apartment building. Police are still out here investigating. They still have to do some of the cleanup of the debris, but, again, no injuries so that is the good news here. A few hours from now former president jimmy carter will be helping to build homes in san jose. Yesterday he was in oakland lending a hand. Its part of the habitat for humanity program. He says if he was still in the white house he would work with lawmakers to secure more federal funding for affordable housing. Theres a very needy place for habitat and others to substitute for them when they dont fill those needs, and to give people inspiration and hope. He has been working with habitat for humanity for the past 30 years. A laptop computer containing personal and medical information on thousands of ucsf patients was stolen from a workers locked car. The hospital is notifying the patients whose names, birth dates and Social Security numbers are included in the stolen information. So far theres no sign anyone has tried to use the information. They could be fined hundreds of thousands of dollars for the latest security breach. San Jose State University is looking into a possible rat problem on campus. It comes after a rat ran across the stage during a speech. Students and Staff Members say theyve noticed a lot of a rats in areas surrounded by construction on campus. The school is now looking into whether they have a bigger problem that could impact Students Health and safety. The new 100 bill goes into circulation today. The bill has been resigned to make it more difficult for counterfeiters. It has a three dimensional blue ribbon on it. Its at the Federal Reserve which will start sending it out to banks today. You may be able to get one at your bank before the end of the week. The bay areas cash for Clunkers Program is making a come back. The air Quality Management district has announced it received 7 million to continue funding the vehicle buyback program. The Program Allows people with registered vehicles that are model year 1994 and older to receive 1000 for surrendering their cars. The goal of the program is to get higher polluting vehicles off the road. We should get free samples of the new 100 bills, test them out. See how they work. Thats a great idea. Lets go to sal. Theres a huge difference in some of the temps. It is noticeably cooler in San Fransisco. It is mostly clear except for patchy fog, down on monterey over to santa cruz as well. System went by yesterday was late on arriving. Temperatures are were very nice. We dont have to worry about any rain in detroit. Its clear so everythings good to go for the as. For us it will be a nice day. Were waiting for the system to drop down tomorrow which will give the Sierra Nevada snow. I dont think well get any rain although could be south bay. San fransisco starting off 53. Well go 62 a high today of 68. Yesterday was 76. 36 up in tahoe, 48 ukiah, 50s down to monterey. 54 eureka. A little chill in the air, 43. Napas in the 40s. Walnut creek is 47. I know todd clark at the Pleasant Hill police department, 48 in Pleasant Hill. There are some upper 40s. Halfmoon bay is 45. 52 at the oakland airport. Hardly a breeze, Fairfield West at 7 well keep an eye on that. Almost everybodys saying calm. Yesterday there was a little component of an easterly breeze. Livermore has that. San jose has that. Sfo northwest, so the breeze is trying to come in a little bit cooler. There is some cooler air aloft which will give us more of a little cooldown. The system is dropping down tomorrow. Well be taking aim more towards the valley or the Sierra Nevada. End result will be a continuation of this cooling trend. Looks like wednesday and thursday will be our coolest day.
