KTVU 9 July 4, 2024

Last january, like in 2023. This year i played in the under 19 t 20 world cup and that was like the first world cup that usa has played in than before that as preparation. We played the under 19 you a team in dubai and we beat them in a series and then we beat the under 19 west indies team in a series as well. And then my debut tournament was to the usa womens team in mexico, uh, making us go to like the next level of like the t 20 qualifiers. Ive had supports of like the teachers in my school, letting me miss school. Ive had my parents support and then ive had, like, obviously my Academy Support like tim, help me go this far, and you said that cricket may not be as popular here as it is in other countries. Where is it super popular . Got england. So all of uk id say like all the United Kingdom and then australia is a big one. South africa to buy like india and then pakistan like all that asia region in europe and everything is very big on like, uh, back in india for both my parents, but my brother started playing when he was in about fifth grade and i was in kindergarten, so i had to go to every single one of those practices, and i kind of just picked up. Theres just a big part of both of our lives at that point, but i first started playing. I in all the rules, and i dont know many of the rules. I feel like if you get the basic idea, its just cricket is a sport that i feel like. People are always willing to help around you. So i took me obviously a while to learn the sport. But my teammates like out on the field, there would be telling me like, oh, this is this and i just feel like you shouldnt be too nervous. I understand that it can be a lot, but i just like you can learn as you keep playing. Talk to us about what you love about the game of cricket. Honestly one thing that i think that ive grown to love is like the team aspect. Obviously ive made like friends and almost families like that. Ive created such close bonds with because when i go traveling like im out of the country for about a month with these people, and i just created such close bonds on and off the field, i generally i genuinely love that aspect about it, and i also just love the fact that its competitive as well. I think im a very competitive person at heart and being able to play your friends on and off. If the field i feel like that just gives you more motivation. Youve been really instrumental in helping girls get into this game of cricket. What spurred you to do that . Growing up . I always played on an all boys team and i felt quite welcome. But i do know that sometimes girls can feel a little bit left out because maybe the conversation is in the same or people looking down on you. And i didnt want that for younger girls. I didnt want that to stop them from playing cricket because they didnt feel welcomed. So i thought that maybe if i could get more girls to play like old girls, teams can be formed and then they can Grow Together as one many girls have you recruited into your team or into the organization California Cricket Academy into the organization itself. I say ive personally met 25 or so on my own, and that ive heard from like the owner of academy and other coaches, that word of mouth is going from them to people in their school or, like there are other classes theyre doing. And i spent seeing like new girls that i havent met before joining the academy. I feel like i cant take credit for them starting cricket because i know that they had support from their families. But im just really glad that they found a space where they feel comfortable to grow in the sport, and they actually enjoy playing in. Last year is committed to u c l a this fall and plans to play for local leagues down in so cal. She hopes to make the u. 19 World Cup Team in malaysia in 2025 up next you can color an ace to start picture from the south bay that helped give hollisters high its first state title in softball. What if a mouse could change the world . New surprises await at the disney100 celebration, only at the disneyland resort. Now to our final story we had beyond this out there to south ball country in the city of hollisters to meet an ace, who pitched a shutout at st she helped hollister hired its first title in school history, and i talked with her about the challenges that she overcame, and the hard work she put in to get there. In the city of hollisters. Theres definitely a huge love for softball here. Sofia maria teeny and the Girls Varsity Softball Team took the spotlight this year, winning the Division One State championship. Sofia pitched a shutout against st francis mountain view. There it is no. This. Hey baylor scored one run in the last inning to win the title. Watching our fans in the stands like half of them have their faces painted red and they have pom poms and they have signs and theyre jumping around screaming with us and you know, its just its an amazing feeling was still in shock. When she got home and talked with her parents. They were like sylvia, just one like the state championship. Thats crazy, and i was just like yeah. I just want to be alone like i didnt want to go out to eat dinner like i didnt want to go party. You know, i didnt want to do anything special. I just wanted to go home and relax. Rusting is well deserved. It was a hard fought journey for marriott et who started off the season in a rough spot. I was really physically weak and mentally weak. You know, i wasnt having a great season beforehand. But when i started High School Softball i know i really picked it up and i felt i needed to be changed. Her mentality focused on the positive and relied on teammates. I worked out more with them. I hit more. I practice more. I physically got stronger. I just i just worked harder. Bottini finished with a 30 to record for me. Its a lot about spin. I have a pretty good screwball and curveball. You know, i really like working in and out and then i also like to use my rice ball. For strikeouts , and then also, ive been working really hard on my changeup, and that definitely came through this season and she hit 4 14 with 29 hits in 78 bats. Our entire lineup was hitting 300 higher. So being in the four hundreds. Its crazy to me. Definitely think my game is pretty good. When youre playing at a high level, you know, its pretty great culmination of hard work. Shes been playing since the age of four. And you pretty early that softball was her sport after stints with ballet and soccer. I told my parents i was like, yeah, im gonna be a picture. You know, like theres nothing you can do to change my mind. And they were just like okay. Like you dont want to try anything else, and i was like, no like this is what i want to do. It worked out well for her. So far, shes garnered titles like picture of the year and first team all league and is proud to put hollister on the map for softball. Could have never imagined i would come this far. You know, it was a really long journey, and the season was definitely my favorite throughout my four years, and im so glad i could experience it. Sophia is headed to the east coast to play softball on scholarship and Malloy University in long island, new york, best of luck to her in her new collegiate career. A big night for team usa with stanford alum sophia smith scoring two of the three goals in her first world cup. Bailey ocarroll caught up with fans watching the big win at crossing in San Francisco. Bailey, i know you hosted that watch party, but the energy there was pretty electric. Greg and christina thats right. You could really feel this energy the second i got out here earlier this afternoon and what wasnt a love, it was great weather in San Francisco. Of course, its cooled off a little bit now. I have my jacket on. But it was a great people, great food, great drinks. Most importantly, though, a great win. But fans, young and old, they really just wanted to be a part of watching this team take that first step on this potentially historic run. Go usa , usa fans, young and old, gathered at San Franciscos the crossing at east cut to watch the Us Womens National team take their first step toward another world cup. Because the us is going to win. Amy brunell is a huge Us Womens National team fan, so much so shes actually going to hop a plane to australia to watch the quarterfinal and final games in person. Im going to the semi and final in sydney. Burnell is one of hundreds who showed up to cheer on alex morgan. Julie ertz in the rest of the team, proving that San Francisco is in fact a soccer city. Soccer is. Its a beautiful game. It is the worlds game. San francisco is the world city and you know, for anybody who says San Francisco is dead, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, just look at this. Well, this watch party had hundreds of people at it. It was hosted by street soccer usa alongside San Francisco. Rex in Parks Department. Its the first of four watch parties in the city. If you want to watch team usa alongside fellow us fans, the next one, that will be on wednesday night when the us takes on the netherlands and itll be at the embarcadero plaza. Reporting live in San Francisco, im bailey ocarroll, ktvu fox two news. It looks like a great turnout. Bailey thank you. More than 40,000 fans packed the stadium in new zealand to see the us team begin their World Cup Campaign and they were not disappointed. We continue our Team Coverage with our sports anchor, joe fonzi. And joe, the quest begins for the stars and stripes. Yeah, no question about it. If you go by the world rankings, its the game the us should win with relative ease with vietnam. More than game though. In tonights us opener in the world cup, the us is number one in the world and the two time defending champions, vietnam, was making its first world cup appearance, ranked 32nd with a good contingent of us fans. Part of the 41,000 plus in auckland, new zealand tonight. It was a cal to stanford connection for the first us goal. 14th minute alex morgan finds sophia smith, who hits the vietnam goldsmith, one of the changing of the guard for the us playing in her first world cup. And it was smith who converted once again in stoppage time of the first half. She won times a ball that heads to her in front of the goal. This one was reviewed for a possible offside violation, but the goal was good as we went through the legs of vietnams thigh. Tran kim thorn two. Nothing us after a half 77th minute. Now heres that nice looking goal. Smith passes to Lindsay Horan, who checks the ball, hits the back of the net three nothing. The final score as the us gets off to a good start in group play. Quite a moment for the 22 year old. Smith. Two goals in her first world cup game after also being named us Soccer Player of the year and the National Womens league mvp. And its so exciting. Every minute of that game was fun and the crowd was amazing. And i think it was a good place to start in this tournament. But i know we have so much more to give. I came into it, you know, with the mindset ill do whatever it takes to help this team win. And tonight thats what it was. And im happy with where we are. But like i said, i think we have a little more in us. So now its on to game two. On what figures to be a much tougher opponent, the netherlands, who the us beat in the world cup finals four years ago. Yeah joe, certainly a good start for the us, but it felt like the score could have been higher, maybe some missed opportunities tonight. Yeah, thats for sure. Theyll take the win, but theres no question that the final score could have been much more lopsided. The us chances came early and often just the fifth minute. Julie ertz has a shot at a header that she just misses. Then just a couple of minutes later, Lindsay Horan cant get the shot past vietnam goalie thi. Kim thorne trying 19th minute, another us chance. Savanah demelo shot right to tom tran and then in the 28th minute alex morgan wide with her left foot just one nothing. When the us had a penalty kick again, the vietnamese goalie rose to the occasion, stopping morgan at point blank range. In the end, the us had eight shots on goal to none for vietnam, so the stats much more lopsided than the final score. And it does matter because down the line goal differential can be used as a tiebreaker. You can chalk up some of it to maybe first game jitters, but itll get much more serious for the us in game two of group play against the netherlands. Yeah, one game at a time, but well take the win tonight. Joe fonzi. Live in our newsroom tonight, joe, thank you. Bet the festivities also in full swing in the south bay tonight. People pouring into paypal park to cheer on team usa. Jesse gary will join us live at 1030 from the Stomping Ground of the San Jose Earthquakes to talk about the turnout. Plus the pressure is on for professional athletes. Stanford alum and the star for the us. Tonight sophia smith shares about her mission to make Mental Health a priority. At every level of the game. Were bringing you that story later in this newscast. Turning now to our bay area weather in a live look tonight at the bay bridge. Traffic moving pretty smoothly this friday night. There is a spare the air alert thats been extended through tomorrow with another day of triple digit heat expected inland will go to meteorologist mark tamayo now in our Weather Center mark, the latest on the heat here. These air quality conditions arent too good either. Yeah, thats right. Christina you probably noticed a bit of some haze in the bay area sky earlier today. Thats all linked to the warm temperatures, at least mostly linked to the hot temperatures moving in. And take a look at all the triple digits out toward concord, livermore, antioch and fairfield this afternoon. Upper 90s up in Sonoma County for santa rosa. But it wasnt a heat up for the entire region. You could see oakland and 77 San Francisco, 70 in the coast. Some dense fog keeping the temperatures mainly in the 60. We are warming up for your saturday once again some dense areas of fog near the coast tomorrow morning. In fact, the dense fog advisory tomorrow morning. It is warm around the bay and another round of hot temperatures inland, upper 90 to right around 102 degrees. So the heat advisory continues for the north bay interior mountains, the inland valleys, the east bay hills and portions of the Santa Clara Valley until saturday, 11 p. M. You heard about the air quality, the spare air, the spare, the air alert continues with moderate levels and orange levels unhealthy for sensitive groups. Heres a live camera, though we cant completely get rid of the fog. In fact, its regrouping right now near the coast and pushing locally back into the bay. So thats having a big impact on current temperatures. Only in the 50s in San Francisco. Compare that to 87 degrees in concord right now. We will eventually cool things off and well have more on that with your update, your full update in a little bit. All right, mark, well see you soon. Thank you. A major headache for drivers who commute from marin to the east bay or San Francisco for much of the day. We want to show you a live picture from the richmond, san rafael bridge. And you can see the eastbound lanes are empty. They have been closed since early afternoon. Ktvu is amberleigh has been monitoring the bridge. She joins us live in studio tonight. Amber greg, were hearing from people who were caught up in the traffic mess about what it was like. Chp says the situation still has not been resolved. Cal california Highway Patrol tells me it received a call shortly before noon friday that there was a person suffering a Mental Health crisis on the richmond, san rafael bridge. Officers shut down the lower deck, which serves traffic going eastbound to try to negotiate with the person, a man who says he was riding in the bike lane shares this photo and describes seeing a young man who looked distraught when he jumped onto the lower deck. So all the chp guys started running, running down the ramp a little bit. I was there with another guy and we just walked by and rode rest of the way over. The traffic was pretty bad when i got back to the other side, it was backed up for as far as i could see. It was backed up to richmond parkway. The backup lasted hours, spilling into the evening commute and beyond. One driver tells me it took him almost two hours to go from san rafael to San Francisco golf and other city streets leading to the bay bridge were impacted. I just checked in with chp and traffic is still h
