KTVU KTVU Fox 2 News At 4pm February 4, 2016

The risks are obvious. The players know that when you visit with the players. They recognize the risks. Many well tell you i dont care. This is my choice. Until, like many of us later in life go, maybe i shouldnt have done that. To i think i have it . Absolutely i do. Am i going to do everything in my power to make sure i dont have these problems as they grow older . Absolutely. Stabler appears to be the first prominent quarterback diagnosed with cte. We are learning more and more about cte. Youve got to think will more players decide to donate their brains to science to figure out maybe later in life after they passed if they too are suffering from it as well . That seems to be the trend is more and more players are doing just that and its not just them and their families. This is research gaining momentum. As we know, the nfl for years tried to hide this way but now they are more up front about it and its becoming more accepted and people do want to get to the bottom of this and find ways to treat it and hopefully prevent it. Rob roth live there in our newsroom in oakland. Thank you very much. Mike haynes, hall of famer, former patriot, former oakland raider at 9 am this morning. This story was breaking of the time and i asked him his thoughts about that and he said im 62 years old, its been on my mind and im thinking about it. He hasnt felt the effects of anything he thinks but its so important to him at this point. He says he is going to donate his brain to science as they continue to study the cte. More than 100 players now according to doctors who have been diagnosed with this, at least seven hall of famers. You have to wonder about the younger players, the ones maybe in college right now looking for that nfl career. Willis change their mind or will they say no, im going to play. I will deal with it later . Moving on in super bowl city. Just Walking Around this afternoon, a lot more crowds compared to monday and tuesday. Not quite sure if they are all area residents or if we are seeing some of the denver bronco fans and the carolina fans coming in. Lets go to subtests sal castaneda. I know you were talking about transportation and security as the crowds get better, is a good closer to super bowl 50. Reporter in fact, more people are coming here and that means more people are taking transit and if you are taking transit, youre going to notice a lot of Law Enforcement officers. Its hard to miss and they are riding all these systems. If you look closely, youll notice transit systems have a lot more Law Enforcement officers, seemingly everywhere this week. Leading up to the super bowl, the Transportation Security Administration is using a system called viper turkestan for visual Intermodal Transportation in response. It helps police bolster transportation security for high risk or special security events. For our scope and area of responsibility, all modes of transportation. We will be the bart stations, light rail, the fairies, about parts. All aviation and transportation. Reporter they deployed tsa officers, police dogs, behavior detection officers and security screeners. This is in addition to the regular Police Agencies that normally patrol transit. Tsa says the increased presence is a deterrent to criminal or terrorist activity in and places more people ready to respond in an instant. We saw officers boarding trains and on the platform. Theres also extra help on the fairies. Some have noticed the extra security and some havent. I did notice more than normal. Reporter what you think about that . Does it make you feel safer . I think its good. Totally normal. I didnt see anything out of the ordinary, no. Reporter ive been doing this for a long time. I dont think ive ever seen more Law Enforcement officers from every agency, not only in super bowl city but todays stories of course about transportation but when the super bowl comes to town, you do have a lot of security and transit is no different. Lets go back to the studio. Thank you very much for that report. I cant agree with you more on that, especially being able to take the ferry the last few days. I noticed the United States coast guard in the waters and walking on to those fairies with their weapons. Posting on facebook about my journey to get on bart and people say be careful, be safe. I feel totally safe. Police officers are everywhere you look. Safety seems to be taken care of many residents are very environmentally friendly its safe to say. For super bowl 50, the Host Committee aimed to leave a green legacy. The long tells us have a plan to make that happen. Reporter look inside this gymnasium and you see the trash bins, the crowds gathering of the smiles blooming. Look closer and you see those who came to give. I brought notebooks, who help and other people brought books, sports equipment. We brought lacrosse sticks. Reporter and those who would receive. This is going to benefit the teens we work with and also the kids that in our are in our cater five program that live in low k through 5 program that live in lowincome neighborhoods. Reporter the project is called super kids super sharing. Asserted his it started as a grassroots effort at bay area schools. We put the word out to fallen middle for middle school for any used equipment you may not need to bring it over and start your donation. Reporter while the ball was most certainly a part of this event, even the raiders players who came well tell you it was about more than out for them in the community. Its a blessing for me. I grip your. Im a native of oakland so to be able to play for the home team and come to an event supporting the less fortunate is great. Its just tumbling. I like coming out to the community because i dont only want to be known as a play on the field. I want kids to understand and interact with me on and off the field and to me as a person and now that i genuinely care. Reporter this event and others are also sending a message to the bay area whether or not you care about football in the big game. I think the theme as being a net positive super bowl and leaving a positive environmental legacy. We are taking a lot of material that might otherwise go to waste and transferring it to areas where there away from areas with lots of stuff and to areas where there is a shortage. Reporter in the end, it wasnt just about what was donated. I heard one of them say they didnt know kids were also willing to give up toys. They thought it was mostly from adults. I think it was important because if you have a school that has a lot of supplies, you dont understand the feeling of not having the right School Supplies for you to learn properly. It was about Lessons Learned off the field. We got a lot of people who donated books and equipment. Very nice to see. They all came together. The experience of giving to students and kids that dont necessarily have what they have. Reporter lessons that go beyond the game. That is claudine wong. So important to get the whole community involved. You have to start with the young ones as well. Just like claudia said, i covered a similar story in phoenix last year during the super bowl and this is something they do every year. Its great to see, not only the children receiving these books but the children also donating. Giving back. Its wednesday, we are knocking on the door of super bowl 50 hoping for sunshine. I saw some clouds today rolling in across much of the bay area. Reporter the clouds have enrolling into the area. I will say its on the cool side. It has been cool all week long with temperatures in the mid 50s but this clouds definitely have increased over the past few hours. I noticed rain showers moving into parts of the north bay, especially north bay. You are looking live at the city stage here. A great series of concerts happening this weekend standing by with me, we have a bj johnson with the super bowl 50 Host Committee. You guys have a great lineup. Its been great already. We had chris isaac kick us off on saturday night. We had a bunch of bands over the last few days and tonight we have a great singer songwriter called matt nathan who has some cool pop folk hits. The band perry tomorrow night, one of public friday night and then alicia keys on saturday night one republic friday night and then alicia keys on saturday night. These are all free. They are free for the public to enjoy. We have had packed ia packed houses. Everyone is having a good time. People are getting along, no major problems. Its of little nip he but dry cold but drive. So far, people have braved the weather. Theres a few people here but this will be filled in a few hours. This is our concert sound. The city stage is over in this area. During the day, most of the activities to our right where there is the Fan Energy Zone where kids as you can see are having a blast doing interactive activities, throwing the football around, taking selfies with the big 50 statute, there is another big screen over there, its a really fun area. Thats where most of the activity is by day and it shifts are hereby night. Reporter thankfully, i know you guys were worried about a lot of rain. We are tracking rain showers tonight but thats about it. Just a few showers for this concert and thats about it. We have lucky with the weather. We are telling people to dress in layers, dress warmly but so far not too much rain to deal with. Reporter thank you so much. Lets look at the forecast. The satellite showing the showers moving into parts of Northern California and approaching northern sonoma county. Our forecast does include the chance of some rain showers, in fact a fairly good chance here in San Francisco. Some light to moderate amounts and down to south bay tonight. A chance of showers will linger into your thursday morning but then after that we are expecting partly cloudy skies, temperatures in the upper 50s to the 60s and our five day forecast coming up for you on standby, we do have a completely different weather pattern as we head toward the weekend. We are going to have more sunshine and a warming trend as well. Tomorrow, 50s and 60s was looking ahead over the next five days, a major warming trend in super bowl sunday we could be talking about some lower 70s across parts of the bay area. I will say just a few clouds here, a few rain showers. You will need the umbrella. Still a great atmosphere and a great concert happening tonight. If you want to come out, enjoy it. Its free. Enjoy is but you really have to bundle up. Its a funny that people want from california say its going to be one but you still need to bring your layers, even for the super bowl. If its going to be 700, if so it can still be chilly when the sun goes down. Reporter yeah, definitely but we started off the week with temperatures recalled for us but by sunday, its going to be a little more comfortable. It should be nice. Punxsutawney phil said an early spring so maybe he is onto something. Still to come right here on live from super bowl city, a live look at Moscone Center. Our fox camera, doors open just a little over an hour ago. We are going to check in with john sasaki who said some officials from minnesota are out here asking a bunch of questions. The rumor is someone was out there wine tasting today in super bowl city. John sasaki is joining us live from market street. Are you hanging out with folks from sonoma . We hung out from the folks from sonoma and folks from minnesota who get the big game with an interesting perspective. They were here on a very good day because the crowds really are significantly bigger than i have been the past two days. People from all over, fans and just about every nfl team are having fun taking in the sights at super bowl city. Of course, one of the big draws is the tshirts and other memorabilia at the super bowl store but here we heard a complaint that the line was taking over an hour. There are shorter lines inside the line exhibit. You can sample some of the dozens of wineries are on hand. People across the country were there as well is bay area of residence. Everyone we talked to say they appreciate the spirit of the super bowl being here including members of the minnesota super bowl Host Committee who are already working on their 2018 game. Its a lot of fun. I think its really great to have so many people here. This is really nice. I have seen a lot of local people with kids. I think this is a great idea. Just something to do. Its in the city. And through interactive and fries, thats important. We have been testing out apps, different activities because you want people to have a bill interactive experience and it seems like the most memorable thing for folks is taking itself your that picture in front of a an iconic spots. Reporter of course, there was a lot of stuff for adults today. We will show you some of the things kids are doing and you will hear more from the minnesota Host Committee. Super bowl 50 at u. S. Bank stadium 50 2 at u. S. Bank stadium 52 at u. S. Bank stadium and 51 at houston. If you havent thrown a party in a while, you want to make sure youve done it right. So why not go to the city that is hosting the super bowl this year to figure out how to do this . Lets check some news headlines. Back to the studio with frank somerville. At this point, we know two students got sick sunday and both ended up in local hospitals. We are still waiting to see if they had the same strain, which would indicate a cluster because of privacy reasons, officials are not giving the student has gender or how they may have known each other. We do know they are both undergraduate students and are said to be doing well and getting treatment. A cluster of meningococcal infections is a Public Health concern and thats why we have been working almost aroundthe clock for the last 72 hours to put protections in place. Some 500 students have been checked out at the University Health center or a local hospital and the vast majority have been given preventative antibiotics. I hate to spoil the party but i have had several people come up to me and they said they were disappointed with super bowl city. One woman said i wanted to take my kids on the zip line and we were there in the afternoon and we registered for attend this at the earliest we could do it would be 8 pm that night. She was just very disappointed. From Walking Around there, are you hearing some people say that or for the most part are people saying this is great . Reporter ive heard some disappointment but what they want maybe something different. I had people say they were disappointed that they came here but they loved nfl experience. At the same time, we are glad we are here. We took a picture with the big 50 and the lines are going to be long. There is one zip line. Its going to be long and its going to be even longer as the days get closer to the super bowl. And it depends on what he wanted to do when you came down here. Theres plenty to eat, drink, walk around, take pictures but yes there is only one zip line. Most of them are just having fun putting on the gear and getting ready for the super bowl. If you arent interested and you want to do it for your children, then i think the nfl experience which you have to pay for is the place to go but if you want to do it for your self and bring kids, maybe super bowl city is and that place for you because its free and thats where the crowds are. People are enjoying drinks. Thats where the food is. There you have it. What are the crowds like during the day . Obviously, its a credit at night but what about during the day . Are there times when its not as crowded as others . First thing in the morning. Eye rolling at 7 30 am and no ones here because it doesnt open until 11 am.
