The topic . Afghanistan. We will see this evening, everyone together will learn what the president is going to do, what his decisions as commander in chief are. And that, thats the most important job he has. Reporter americas longest war in afghanistan to date spanning 16 years, costing the
United States billions of dollars and the lives of more than 2,000 troops. President trump tweeting saturday that his days spent at camp david with generals and military leaders resulted in many decisions made including afghanistan. We know if we pull out and the government collapses, youre going to have some combination of isis, alqaeda, the taliban running the country again. Thats a longterm very real threat. President Trump travels to phoenix where a hold a rally, despite the mayor asking he hold the visit given the events that transpired over the past week. Joe waultman, fox news. For some perspective, in mar of 2014,
President Trump, well then candidate trump, wasnt a candidate. He tweeted this. We should leave afghanistan immediately. No more wasted lives if we have to go back in, we go in hard and quick. Rebuild the u. S. First. And earlier, that same year again 2013 he tweeted quote i agree with president obama on afghanistan, we should have a speedy withdrawal. Why should we keep wasting our money, rebuild the u. S. Joining us live by the
Woodrow Wilson princeston of new jersey, politics, lauren wright. Professor, what do you expect to hear from the president tonight about afghanistan . Well, in addition to some policy content that youve mentioned we expect a true announcement, we expect to hear from more accountability for nato troop, for example
President Trump putting more pressure on them. But i will be paying really close attention to tone. And the reason for that is because this is a solemn speech in a solemn setting and theres no place for a personal fault. There really isnt any in president ial spep, no room for i or me or personal adulation or attacks. And so i expect to see a difference in tone tonight and im paying really close attention to that. Because the most basic responsibility of the president is to communicate with the public and to make them feel safe and stable. Is there a flipflop here given his earlier tweets supporting president obamas troop withdrawal, is he being hypocritical . This is a really stark change, but it is common for president ial policy to evolve from their platform on the campaign trail. And the reason for that is because president s come in to office with a certain set of expectations. Their teams change and they have more information at hand. So this could for example be an indication that the president s listening to mattis and his other
Foreign Policy advisors. And at least among elites, there seems to be a perceived competence on his
Foreign Policy team, different from his domestic policy team. I think, you know, not necessarily good or bad or different from the past but a stark change and so he needs to explain that to people and in a really credible way. If the president wants to put more troops in afghanistan, does he need any support from congress on this . Yes. And he needs
Public Opinion on his side. I think a really common misconception is that what the public thinks about policy isnt an important part of the president s agenda getting accomplished. That could not be less true. Public opinion, very important. Its important to congressmen who are facing elections in the upcoming years and to senators and so, in order to get congressional support which is a good thing to have for the president , you need
Public Opinion on your side. Absolutely. Last question before we go. How much
Political Capital does he have left given the failure on the healthcare bill and the personal attacks hes had on fellow members of his own party . Really little. And, you know, thats, that, thats why these opportunities cant be wasted. And frankly, pivoting is good political practice, its
Good Communications practice. But, you know, this pivot would not be necessary if the president hasnt botched his response in the wake of the charlottesville incident last week. And so, you hope that these types of change in strategy arent necessary. But they are common. Dr. Wright from princeton, new jersey. We appreciate your time and your perspective. Can you talk to us about the reasoning behind this though because reported a pair of audits by ahead reprimanded your city for improperly spending funds. Whats your response to that . Well, you know, thats pretty much all hud does is they reprimand cities for improperly spending funds. And im trying to change the narrative. The narrative is that no city is getting enough money to operate their housing authorities. And the lack of funds means lack of staff to operate them properly and, you know, its just, its an endless circle, you know. They dont give you enough money to run the operation right and then when you make a mistake, they come down on you and reprimand you for it. And they take money back. And its unsustainable. You know . And we just need to try something different. Okay. And if this does become successful, you dismantle the

Which is just this, he just receipts a living represents a living breathing, the scolds and the nannies insane. And i love him for that. What are plenty of things you do as a president , i think he does things just to mess with people. Reporter really, is that a good way to be president , just to mess with people . Yes whuchlt come in specifically to break up the system, he was elected to mess with people. He was elected to be a thorn in the side of the establishment both left and right. Reporter on your facebook painl you have bannon 2020. Yeah, i want him to run, just to annoy the liberals. Reporter he blames liberals for many things but mostly for a double standard when it comes to free speech. I want people demonstrating in the streets. Reporter do it peacefully . On all sides, on all sides. I dont think there are just two sides on any of these two questions. I want everybody on the streets. I want it peaceable, i want it respectful. It would be nice if the problem is the way, the police operate. And this kind of town because they dont police properly. And you can tell that some of it seems to be tongue in cheek. And i just thought it was important to see a little bit more about what this guys all about. Because people get so worked up about this guy. When you sit down and talk to him, he can be pretty charming, hes obviously very smart. You dont have to agree with anything that he says but to take him so literally, i think could be a little dangerous because i dont know that what he says he believes everything that he says. Well, what were you expecting when he first sat down with you, were you expecting something completely different or did he just hit i thought he was going to be very confrontational and someone difficult to talk to and very kind of demanding and obnoxious. But he wasnt quite like that. I mean, i thought he was somewhat condescending and obviously very smart and i dont agree with a lot of what he says. But i think he raises some interesting points that there are worth talking about. The biggest one is free speech. He says hes not advocating for violence, he just wants people to be able to talk and exchange ideas. I think thats important. Beyond that i dont know. Well, he no doubt has a lot of people riled up. Yes, he does. Yes he does. As concern grows over this sundays right wing rally at
