Were being evacuated. A heart breaking scene in the metro there after the explosion, the child crying for her parents. Wondering what just happened. Probably two innocent and too young to understand that someone had just tried to kill her and everyone else. Belgium raised the terrorism alert to its highest level and declared three days of national mourning. Here is a timeline. At 8 00 a. M. In belgium, two explosions in the airport and an hour later on third explosion at the metro and that station is in a neighborhood filled with european power and blocks from the European Commission headquarters and the parliament buildings. Tom vacar is at San FranciscoInternational Airport after talking about ways to prevent an attack here. Tara moriarty is in france. And we start first with cristina rendon. It is about one a. M. Wednesday morning in belgium. Authorities have been carrying out raise across the country through the attacks and fearing another attack. And the search is on for one of three suspects. Two separate explosions rocked the Brussels AirportTuesday Morning killing at least ten people and injuring dozens more. An hour later another blast raised the death toll and left dozens running to safety. Belgiums are left saddened and shocked. Phone lines were dead and so everything went through social media. It is weird to acknowledge the fact that it is going to be me or my friends or anybody i knew that got killed this morning. Hours after the attacks, this image was released by belgium authorities showing three men, two of them wearing gloves only on their left hand. Are believed to be responsible for the airport bombings. The search is on for a third suspect that reportedly fled. At least one undetonated suicide vest found at the airplane. Following the raise around the country, an explosive device containing nails found in a home with Chemical Products and an islamic flag. John kirby encouraged all americans to shelter in place. We know that a number of u. S. Citizens were injured but we dont have an accurate figure right now. We dont know of any u. S. Deaths at this point. Three mormon missionaries were injured and a u. S. Air force serviceman and his family were hurt. Though officials wont release the injuries. We continue to learn more information about those americans and will have more about them coming up in our 5 30 hour. Cristina what about the idea of tying this attack to the recent paris attacks. Any progress . We know u. S. Officials believe that the two attacks are linked and learning that the explosive used in the attacks will be examined to see whether or not they will examine the explosives in the paris attacks. There is no link and they dont want to go their yet. Cristina rendon in the newsroom. President obama is cuba when the attacks occurred and said temporaries are with the people of belgium and said the world must unite against terrorism. We must be together regardless of nationality or race or faith and fighting against the scourge of terrorism. We can and will defeat the people that threaten the security of people around the world. Later the president and his family left cuba. Raoul castro was there to say goodbye but not there when president obama arrived. The president s next stop is argentina. The french president says europe was targeted. And the attacks comes four months after paris was attacked last november. British Prime MinisterDavid Cameron said today is a day for sympathy and condolence and making sure we are very clear that we will never let the terrorists win. As a precaution Homeland Security is stepping up security at major u. S. Airports and at rail and transit stations across the country. Homeland security says there is no specific or credible intelligence of plots like those carried out today. Tom vacar is at San FranciscoInternational Airport. Reporter the airport says security is stepped up but not visible to the untrained eye because you have to realize that not all security agents armed and ready to go to action wear uniforms. Through the failures reported and unreported. Terrorists know a soft target is easy but one that creates fear and financial loss. There is a reason terrorists attacked an airport lobby and open rail system, not tight security where masses of people enter the systems. The Access Controls are weak or nonexistent. The attackers can find crowded spaces that typically dont have good Access Control. Reporter most folks we met at sf othink security is adequate. For everybodys safety, i think security should be in place all the time. Just the way we have it right now. Or even if it could be better than this. Unfortunate it happened the way it did. I feel security is right. In paris where transportation is guarded terrorists attacked a restaurant and stadium and the stadium that had security at all entrances was not penetrated by attacked outside. Thats why one homeward bound paris women thinks that there should be security at the entrances. Those people that want to die like this, they dont care about living. Would that be effective . If you take the Access Control further outside the perimeter of the airport, you still got a point of attack. It is just you relocated it. Nonetheless at los angeles airport a lone gunman was killed. They can target these targets as being economically damaging as they terrorize society at large. And so the best way to protect the public space is to rope Armed Security controls and detection guards and none of those will be in uniform. Tom vacar, fox 2 news. One that stood out about the attacks in belgium, they happened at the airport the attacks and then an hour later the metro, that has not been shut down. If there was an attack at sf owhat would happen to bart . Would that shut down . If they have a plan they are not talking about it but they did refer to the fact that during 9 11 attacks all of those people crossing bridges because transit was closed created a mess with those people getting out of town. Much of what bart does is on an asis basis to say if something occurs we decide what to do and they might shut down part of it and they might not. They are not talking too much about it. But the reality of the situation is that transit is important and while they may shut it down temporarily. It is doubtful it would be closed for long. Bart and trains are soft targets, are we getting to the point where we might have security in place on bart . In other words you have to go through security before you get on a train or is that completely in practical. In practical unless we have the incidents in the you said. But these systems move and operate because you move quickly and you get on the train and go and get off. If we had to screen everything and our society would change in a way that wouldnt be america anymore. Tom vacar, ktvu. In San Francisco the Belgium Community is also rallying together to comfort one another. Tara moriarty joins us now live from city hall where there will be a vigil for the victims. Tarra. At 7 30 there will be a candlelight vigil in front of city hall and right now actually the members of the Belgium Community have rolled this large piece of paper so people can write their condolences. It feels like de javu. Months ago in paris where people were shocked. Flags fly at halfstaff in San Franciscos city hall, a reminder of what mayor lee is calling the heartless attacks carried out in belgium. Everybody has been showing very deep solidarity with the people of belgium. And that is impressive. Natalie mcguire is the honorary counsel of belgium. Everybody is safe in my family. The mayor reached out to mcguire this morning and released a statement saying we stand with the people of brussels and all of belgium and stand against intolerance and we play for the victims against the senseless acts of violence on Treasure Island police had an active shooter drill. It had been on the books for months but highlighted the importance of being prepared for terrorist attacks. The whole purpose is that we dont have victims that are injured and not receiving fast active attraction. The city will remain on alert if they monitor the situation. The candlelight vigil set for 7 30 tonight and the public is also invited to write messages here on the paper. We also have heard that city hall will be lit up in the colors of the belgium flag this evening, red, yellow and black. Back to you. A lot of people standing together. Tarra. Thank you. And paris is showing solidarity with belgium. Here is a look at the eiffel tower. Lit up in black, yellow and red and paris people are dealing with the 130 People Killed last year. We want to get perspective in what happened and joining you is rick smith a special f. B. I. Agency the attacks come days after the expected mastermind of the paris attacks. Do you think this was payback . I think if you look at how it happened it is disturbing. The paris suspect was arrested three or four days ago and this attack must have been planned already and implemented it right after the arrest so it looks like retaliation. That is a real concern because of the capability of doing this when and where they wanted to do it. Rick, today the french Prime Minister said we were at war. It seems to me that when it comes to isis, there is no negotiation and the only thing they understand is force. So what do we do in a case like this . Im not going to be political correct. Is now the time to kill them. Yes, what we have done is inefficient. We have to declare war on the enemy. Law enforcement has the right mental framework and they are doing what they have to do. I dont think the people realize that this threat is now. It is going to happen real soon. When it happens the agency will get criticized the f. B. I. Why didnt you connect the dots. Give them the tools to do what they have to do and we will have a better chance of defeating this enemy. Rick, authorities in brussels say that they expected an attack will happen and couldnt stop it. Do you think there was time that they could have shut down the subway in brussels since the subway attack came an hour after the airport attack . No, i think that is what is really disturbing. They knew first of all from other intelligence that something was going to happen. They knew then when they arrested the suspect from the paris attacks. That something was going to happen. They did everything they could to catch the people and they still couldnt do it and they had a massive effort. So this is a loss for western civilization. A victory for isis and this cant continue. This is happening right now and if you look at the film of this thing, these people are scared to death. And it is going to happen in this country and going to be all of this outcry about why nothing was done. And that mentality needs to change. That leads to my next question. I want to know what is it that scares you, are you worried this is going to happen and a matter of time before it happens in the United States and specifically should we be worried about an attack in the bay area . Well, anywhere in this country. Look, they have capabilities and less capable in this country because of lack of infrastructure, lack of a support system but they were able to pull this off under difficult circumstances in brussels. They knew the heat was on and accomplished what they wanted to accomplish. So, yeah, im concerned. I think everybody is concerned that knows anything about this stuff. Law enforcement particularly. You can only do so much. And it needs to be vigilant. We appreciate your perspective. Thank you. Breaking news from phoenix. A massive fire. We are told this is a paper plant on fire as you can see there. It is sending flames and huge plumes of thick, black smoke in the sky. The fire broke out in the last hour and at least two alarms but judging by the intensity of the fire it is probably going to go to more alarms than that. Crews right now working to try to get it under control. The paper plant is actually not far from the airport in phoenix and we just checked and at least so far we dont believe that fire is causing any flight delays at the airport. If we do learn more information we will bring it to you. Coming up. The 49ers in the city of santa clara clashing over lease payments at levy stadium. The city says it has not been paid since december and the 49ers say it has not missed a payment. The bandit and new images that police need your help to track down. A rundown building. A federal bankruptcy judge has approved the sale of a no torturously troubled hotel in oakland for a nonprofit Housing Group. The owner of Imperial Towers have been stripped of control and filed for bankruptcy and Paul Chambers shows us the struggle is far from over for the people that live there. Imperial towers have gone an facelift. Repaired the ceiled and added fresh paint. The crews are constantly working to bring the building up to code. To appreciate how far it has come you have to see where it was in january of last year when we first came on the scene. Holes in the wall and bacteria in the water and a broken elevator and raw sewerage dripping down the walls seem to be the norm for the residents of the 90 unit building. They have suffered in Critical Conditions. Rodent and cockroaches. That better day may be here as a federal Court Approved the sale of the building to a berkeley based Housing Group called resources for Community Development or rcd. I will feel better when everything has gone through and there are hurtles met. And like fixing the elevators and issue with the plumbing and power that prevents them from cooking. We have four different rooms on one circuit breaker. We try to use like a toaster oven and the power goes out. The property is being managed by a trustee after the owner filed bankruptcy. It was the trustee and oakland that asked for the sale that could take up to 18 months to complete. After that it is estimated the property will need more than ten Million Dollars in ren renovations and the City Attorney says the tenants will have safe and Affordable Housing. The court and its powers and the trustee and we had somebody appointed at the court level. It has until the end the year to raise the funding to purchase the building. This building will stay Affordable Housing for 55 years. Paul chambers, ktvu fox 2 news. Time to get a check of the weather. A little warmer and more sunshine around the bay area.
