That ultimately is to the detriment of the minority clients that so many people are seeking to kind of support. A lot of people think that if brock turner was black or hispanic that he would be serving prison time right now. The public defender says that in his opinion, six months in jail with only three months served as an appropriate sentence in a case like this . Reporter yes to that point. The second point is the racial component. I asked specifically about that. If the defendant or the accused had a different skin tone and a different name and did not come from smalltown ohio with parents who could pay his way to stanford, would there be a different outcome . He said with reject with regards to judge aaron persky, he did not think so. From what he knows of people that have been booked with the judge in the courtroom, he does not think it wouldve been different in this particular case. You have to look at the broader impact in society. If the case was held in a different county and that defendant had a different skin color, would it be different then . I think you could say that maybe it would be. That is where the racial component gets mixed into this. In this particular case, he says that he believes the judge would have looked at the case the same way regardless of the race of the defendant and come up with the same sentence of six months in jail based on the fact that he is a College Student and has no priors, etc. So, yeah, frank, regardless of race. Reporter without drawing it out too long, did he say why he thinks that serving only six months in county drake county jail is appropriate in this case . It reporter it is not so much that he does not think that he should be in prison, it is more to the point that he doesnt believe in putting brock turner in prison for 610 years is productive. He said that we as a culture and a society want the jurors to look at a wide range of factors as opposed to just looking at an arbitrary number and saying, you know, he may be a good guy, but im sorry, the book says you committed a crime and you have to do eight years, so eight years it is. I think that is more of this point. Not so much that it had to be six months. Maybe it could have been 12 months or 18. I said three or four. I dont think it is necessarily the number per say, it is the concept that there has been a horrible crime and the reaction from the society at large is, we must impose whatever the max is. It has to be the max and it cannot be toward the lower end of the spectrum. I think that is more of what he is addressing. There are new developments tonight in the case of a 14 yearold girl who was kidnapped in oakland. Police today confirmed that a number of teenage girls were rescued and the given up date as to who has been arrested. Our crime reporter, henry lee, is here with that. Reporter i learned there were three girls held at the apartment. Thankfully all of them have been rescued. The three girls are ages 14, 15 and 16 and they were the victims of sex trafficking and apartment at the corners of 65th and herzog street in oakland. The girl was kidnapped as she walked to school. All three were rescued by police. Officers arrested a 21yearold man and a 22yearold woman. Police say it is not unusual to arrest women who allegedly forced girls into prostitution. A female can use ruses or newer children and young girls. There is that female connection where they have different styles in operations and they may not trust the men. Reporter it is not as much who would expect a woman to be arrested for this kind of thing . But the officer told me that you are told about stranger danger and most people are warned about strange men. In this case, we have females who are enticing young girls.
