Reporter when police towed the car eight hours after the shooting you see bullet holes and heavy damage to the front and rear of the civic. Police say while it is unclear if the sapped gun, a car can be seen as a weapon, and officers to have defend themselves. Officers obviously are allowed to defend themselves if they feel that their lives are in danger, if theyre at risk of Great Bodily Injury or death. They can discharge their Service Weapon to protect their lives or the life of someone else. That was pedro rivera reporting. San jose police are investigating the citys sixth officer involved shooting this year involving a person with Mental Health problems. It happened early yesterday at an apartment complex on east john street. Officers say the suspect refused to open the door, then set a fire inside the building in an apparent bid to get away from officers. Police say they were then forced to shoot and kill the suspect who was armed, they say, with an axe. Investigators also say that 35 yearold man who was killed add long history of mental problems and several runins with the law. In dublin state investigators spent most of the day examine ago water slide at dublins newly opened water park called the wave. They are trying to figure out why a 10yearold boy flew right off one of the slides. That scary moment on the parks opening day was caught on camera. The boy took quite a hit after skidding across the concrete but only suffered some scratches. Ktvus tom vacar has new details on the safety inspections and the response from park visitors. Reporter today inspectors from cal osha came to the wave in dublin to see what defect or possible chain of events led a 10yearold boy to fly out of a water slide chute. The owner, the city of dublin, let customers and the media alike in to use and inspect the facilities, but with two of its three signature water slides shut down for now. Definitely makes me concerned but theres definitely other features of the water park that we can still utilize that are still safe. Reporter as the day warmed up and wore on more and more people came to what is sure to be a major recreation spot when temperatures climb in the summer. Hopefully they fix the problem and it seems to be okay, so it seems like theres a line out so i guess people dont really care. Reporter the good news here is that all of testified exists. The child can explain what happened. The video shows exactly what happened. And the park itself is totally intact. Whatever repair needs to be made can be made quickly and effectively. Obviously its horrible what happened to him, and theres probably fault on both sides that can be addressed and fixed, but it doesnt scare me because i know if i follow the rules i will be safe. There were a number of events in cities across the bay area today to remember them. One of the largest was in San Francisco. This womans father is buried here, arthur harvey, who fought in world war ii. He went to war. It just means a lot that my father did that. Reporter the thoughts of this vietnam veteran are with fellow soldiers who never made it back home. I get a sense of not happiness but a good feeling when im here. Its like a welcome home. Reporter more than 1500 people gathered to pay tribute to those who fought and died in americas wars. This mother and father from santa rosa lost their son when an i. E. D. Exploded near him in iraq 11 years ago. Still, they say, memorial day does not bring them sadness. He was a fine, fine young man that he always looked for his own path in life, and he was really proud of where he was. As far as sad, no. Not sad. We should be lucky and remember, and if we dont remember that people have sacrificed, were lacking something. Many of the volunteers are members of local boy scout and girl scout troops. Today they are honoring the 8,000 to 10,000 u. S. Service members buried at the cemetery. Near the nations capitol President Trump took part in a touching ceremony at Arlington National cemetery. Reporter President Trump marked his first memorial day as commander in chief by placing a wreath at the tomb of the unknown soldier before speaking at an Observance Program in the amphitheater. We only hope that every day we can prove worthy, not only of their sacrifice and service, but of the sacrifice made by the families and loved ones they left behind. The Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund is looking to put a face with each of those names and is looking to find a picture of every Service Member who died in vietnam in order to create a virtual wall of faces. Ktvus henry lee tells us that early indications are speed was a factor. Reporter it all started at about 8 00 monday morning. Police say a gmc truck with seven people inside was speeding south on park street when it clipped a Toyota Sienna minivan. The impact caused the truck to go out of control, roll over several times and hit a tree before coming to rest in the parking lot a full block away. A female in the truck died at the scene. A male also in the truck was taken to high land hospital in oakland where he died. Police say five other people who were in the truck were hurt and taken to hospitals with serious injuries. The minivan driver suffered minor injuries. Police said the victims appear to be in their late teens to early 20s. They say speed appears to be a factor but it is unclear if drugs or alcohol were involved. We spoke to police and a cook at a nearby coffee shop who witnessed the crash. This morning around 8 00 a. M. Our dispatch received multiple calls of a rollover vehicle collision, single car. Officials found multiple outcome pants with major injuries. So we heard the i heard a crash, and then as i looked over i saw the van that was right here pull up, and then i saw the truck that was over there flip and then run into the sign that is down by that restaurant over there. I mean, its a very unfortunate event. You dont need to have speed to go somewhere. Reporter while police say they know that speed is definitely a factor, they still dont know how fast this suv was going. A deadly accident in the east bay today shut down part of interstate 580 in livermore. It happened just before 2 30 in the eastbound lanes. The chp says a car was stopped on the freeway near first street when another career ended it, sending the first car into the Center Divide where it caught fire. A third car then hit both of the other cars. The driver in the first car was pronounced dead at the scene. The two other drivers were not seriously hurt. Eastbound lanes were closed until shortly after 5 00 this morning. North korea continued to provoke neighbors and the United States by launching another missile. The shortrange missile flew 280 miles before landing in japanese waters. Its the latest in a string of missile launches by north korea. Officials are concerned, and japans Prime Minister called for action to stop the launches. British police have made another arrest in connection with the Manchester Concert bombing. Several homes were evacuated because of the danger of explosion from the gas leak but pg e says the leak was capped about 8 30 this morning. Reporter kids of all ages ride bikes and scooters, like this twoyearold. But just a few feet away, a homeless couple has slept overnight on the playground. Its a common occurrence when we come to the park in the morning that some people have turned the kids playground into a camp. Reporter parents have called police to oust the couple. Youre harassing the homeless thats what we want to say reporter the twosome does not respond well when they see our cameras. Weve had people defecate on our steps. Reporter but homelessness is only part of the problem here, says david. Needles, joints, empty bottles, spit, vomit. Reporter last friday a resident took this photo of himself sweeping up hundreds of dirty needles near his home. The needles were given to the local firehouse to dispose of but Officials Say people shouldnt try to clean up needle themselves. Rather, call 911. Last month crews picked up 17,500 needles in homeless encampments alone. Over the past year that number was more than 101,000. I find it very disturbing. Reporter jeffjeff is the supervisor of the district. We have a department of homelessness. Their budge set north of 220 million. This was established specifically to address this problem. Reporter the department of Public Health has stepped in with two kiosks for needle drops. But with an estimated 22,000 iv drug users Officials Say the problem is bigger than just the homeless. For these people they would like to see Solutions Start at their doorstep. Wish we had more police presence. Reporter but with 5,000 to 6,000 police calls a month just for homelessness, the supervisor says they need to focus on other crime. Theyre not the best equipped. It really is like the last resort.
