Its only 7 contained at this time. Full containment isnt expected until at least august 5th. The fire destroyed eight structures. The problem is another 1500 are threatened tonight. Ill put up a map to gives you a sense where the fire is in mariposa county. Yosemite valley to the northeast of the fire. Monolake is farther off in the distance. Bill martin tracking conditions in the fire zone. First to rob malcolm live at the Driver Command Center in mariposa county. Rob. Reporter good evening. We moved down the street to highway 140 about 23 miles outside of mariposa just to show you an idea of whats going on. Highway 140 remains closest to traffic. Many people driving through will get turned around at the other end. Meanwhile, you can see some people in the community put up a sign, thank you, firefighters, everybody showing their support for the multiple agencies out here fighting the blaze. You can see smoke going up into the sky. You can see a great lay your of smoke just be the layer of smoke beneath the sky. That is from the smoke and embers from the smoke on the other side. This is only 7 contained. And the progress cal fire will be able to make largely depends what they can be tonight and overnight. They are crossing their fingers theyll be able to gain some ground. Reporter overnight, the mariposa wildfire doubled in size to over 45,000 acres. As it reggied towards the town of mariposa raged towards the town of mariposa, crews continued fighting the blaze on the ground and using heavy equipment. Today was more of the same. The perimeter of the fire continues to spread. Theres a lot of heavy fuel. And the winds and mountains and terrain cause it to be a challenge. Structure defense became the priority, and still it, as we get more resource in, were making headway. Lines are being put in today. A lot of work. Air support. Its kind of a cooperative effort from ground and offer resources. Reporter those resources have been hard at work since the blaze broke out on sunday. Working long shifts, crews from multiple agencies flooded the merced state fairgrounds finding sleep, stocking up on supplies and gearing tip for the long days and gearing up for the long days and nights ahead. We have local government fire diplomas, federal resources from out of state and of course, cal fires. Reporter eight structures have been lost. 1500 more are thettend and people have been forced to leave. Right now we have 45 people here and theyre coming and going. Some people have families and things like that. Weve had some visitors that got stuck. They were in yosemite for the day couldnt get back up. So they are here checked in with us. Reporter andrew tyner said he arrived here in time as flames were coming towards his ranch. We left on our one when we saw the flames. We figured once we see flames that are actually coming, were out of here. Reporter while containing the blade could take weeks, crews are finding a sense of optimism. We will contain this fire, it will just take a while. It will be several days, but were going to make progress every day. Reporter im back here live. 5,000 people have been evacuated. Residents have no idea when theyll be able to return home. And especially those residents living in the hills, theyre nervous about what to expect to return to once the all clear is given. They tell me this afternoon that waiting is the hardest part. Now to our chief meteorologist bill martin who is tracking the conditions that firefighters are facing tonight. Bill. They could be way worse. 92 degrees, humidity in the 12 range. Winds northwest today. Live camera shot of the fire zone. I talked about this earlier at 4 00 and 5 00 and now here we are at 6 00. One of the reasons the fire is going off is terrain driven. It means have you a lot of hills. But you also have this transition zone between the dry brush which creates flash fires, the kind we see in the bay area, the wild oak, which is that tall, yellow white grass you see everywhere. When youre in a zone like this youre in the transition between the grass, oaks and pines, so the firefighters are fighting three different types of fires in my mind. I know this area and how moving in the zone where you have the pipe trees, so youre seeing pine trees so you are seeing a lot of techniques being used. Higher up on the hill you get up in the pines, oaks and weeds. The other thing i was flashing back to, this area we see fires in the foothills often, but i cant remember the last time this tract burned. You have an area that perhaps hasnt seen a good burn in 20years, so you have a lot of dry fuel, the usual. And the dead binds from the beetle disease. This is 4500 acres, its a very big fire and its growing. It doubled in size overnight. Conditions now will help this is when they hit the fire the hardest at night. Theyll get cool, moist air from the bay. Temperatures tomorrow will be back in the low 90s here. Teens for relative humidities. And air will remain northwest about eight. Conditions atmospherically, not the end of the world but the terrain and fuels are really the problem here. Now to washington, d. C. And the g. O. P. Plan to repeal obamacare without replacing it. Today, the Congressional Budget Office issued their report on the plan. It says the republican paralyze would increase the number of unshared americans by 17 million next year and by 2026, 32 million more people will be ininsured. Todays report comes as President Trump urged senators to go back and try to come to an agreement on a Healthcare Plan this is a 180 for President Trump who yesterday told lawmakers to abandon the vote and let it collapse. Reporter today, prurp had all republican senators President Trump had all republican senators over to the white house where he served lunch topped with a stern message. We have no choice. We have to repeal and replace obamacare. Reporter President Trump you remembering senators to go back to the drawing board and agree to an alternative plan to replace obamacare. I think the people of this country need more than a repeal. They need a repeal and replace. And we were very, very close. Reporter the challenge coming one day afternoon the president declared the current healthcare law should be allowed to fail. Sparking a fire storm of push back and more protests. Its a file youre morally, its a failure politically and its a file youre of president ial leadership failure of president ial leadership. Reporter Senate Republicans attending todays luncheon seemed to leave with a renewed commit hent of putting together a replacement bill. The purpose was to continue to push this process along. You think it was a successful meeting. Reporter the president asking senators not to leave for august recess without first putting a new healthcare bill on his desk. Im sitting in that office.
