Taking statements from some people and here is the video of the scene we just witnessed. Tensions still running high from what we gathered in talking to the people involved in this fight. A young man a student here at the campus was standing talking to someone else. He was wearing a make great again hat and two people in a suv pulled up and one got out and according to the victim in this case he was punched at least once in the face. He was attacked by this person that he said he doesnt even know. He believe itself was a politic alli motivated assault in this case. We did see at least one person taken in to custody by Police Officers who responded here to the scene and i talked to i witness to all of this. Here is what he said. Im not sure where we are living right now this country of free speech. Its unfortunate to see how people are behaving way because the person just promoting his views. Reporter and again its not clear if arrests were made. We did see at least one person taken in to custody. We dont know the condition of the man who said that again that he was suddenly assaulted by these people who just drove up and hopped out of their car. We are waiting for word from police on what happened. It was a violent night last night as protests here got out of control. A free speech showdown on the Berkeley Campus last night that ended in chaos. Things got out of hand when some protesters started launching fireworks and then set fire to this portable light and generator. Others in masks used metal barricades to smash window hats the Student Union building where a speaker was set to speak. That event was canceled buffs the violence. Cal student body president said that it was disheartening to see the way this peaceful demonstration went. Disappointing to see that a powerful, peaceful demonstration organized by students was coopted by individuals with no relation to the campus that. They would come onto this campus, the home of free speech. Reporter berkeleys police chief said she expected protests with last nights event and had extra officers on hand from other campuses and from the Oakland Police department and the sheriffs office. At times police did use pepper balls to disperse the crowd but for the most part it appeared to be a hands off approach. This campus is well known for its free speech stance. No group should hesitate to have an event. I think people made their point when they protested against violence and i think that was a Free Speech Movement and something they could do. When it went past that and went down to vandalism that was kind of the line drawn. I dont think that will strengthen either partys position. Reporter after the violence on campus last night a group of protesters marched to Downtown Berkeley where a number of businesses were vandalized. This starbucks had its windows smashed out and there was also damage to several different banks. This is how some cal students responded this morning. A group was out early helping businesses clean up. We saw the protest last night and were upset by the fact that property was damaged and people were hurt. We wanted to help out in the morning. We got autopsy round five, been picking up glass and cleaning up trash and doing the best we can for the community. Reporter and its possible that at least one person was arrested after the protest last night. I did hear back just a short time ago from representative from the berkeley Police Department. This protest spilled over from the cal campus into berkeley and apparently there were at least three people who were injured in some form or fashion in the Downtown Berkeley area last night. Thats according to berkeley police. Its not clear what their involvement was. Three injuries reported by the berkeley Police Department this afternoon. A lot of clean up still to do here. A lot of smashed windows on the Berkeley Campus. As you can see things slowly sort of getting back to normal and classes have gone on as scheduled today. Okay. Tensions still high with that man getting assaulted just a few minutes ago. Reporter certainly. If. The university itself released a statement condemning the protest the saying we deeply regret the violence unleashed by this group and that undermines the First Amendment rights of the speaker and those who came to lawfully come together and protest his presence. Several crowd control measure was in place but we couldnt plan for the unprecedented. And the mayor expressed his disappointment writing they provided far right exactly the images that they want to use to try to discredit the vast majority of Peaceful Protesters in berkeley and across america who are deeply concerned about where our country is heading. The president took to at which time tore weigh in on the protest. We are live with that part of the story. Reporter a few boarded up window as the Student Union building here on the campus is all thats left all that you can see from the damage of what happened here. The people who invited the speaker to campus say they have no regrets. Some members the republicans say they are encouraged by the president s response. I was shocked. I woke up this morning and i saw the tweet and i was very excited to see that the president saw what was going on on berkeleys campus. Reporter and this is a wyatt is he talking about. The president last night said if berkeley doesnt allow free speech and practices violence on innocent people with a different point of view no federal funds. It was in response to this protest that took a violent turn last night. Protesters voiced their opposition to the appearance of a speak erin vited to speak on campus by Berkeley College many ares. The speech was cancelled when things took a turn for the worst. He and others escorted out of the Student Union building by police. Today he repeated the message and trumps tweet saying berkeley should have all federal funding cut until it can demonstrate its commitment to the First Amendment. Nogales will do. I think that the attention of the president is to certainly put a spotlight on berkeley. This is going require some really deep analysis into what we are trying to do as a university and what type of environment do we want our students, our student that are here and possible students to be around. Reporter that was the president of the Berkeley College republicans jose diaz. He said he dear sirn t want to see students hurt by a cut in federal funding but he wants change. According to the University Website berkeley gets about 55 of its research funding, or 370 million from federal grants. Mostly from the National Institute of health and National Science foundation. We spoke to a law professor and he said that even if the president wanted to revoke that money tomorrow there would definitely be legal challenges. When the government gives money, awards money to universities, to cities, to states, effectively its a contract. What you cant just impose conditions on that agreement. Especially illegal ones. Reporter he said it would be difficult in his view for that money month be taken away so quickly. The Lieutenant Governor responded to the president s tweet saying as a u c regnt, im appalled at your willingness to remove the access to education because of the actions of a few.
