Reporter the desire to start a family, raise a child and become parents thats what this couple from kensington wants terribly. You guys really want a child. Yes. But for david its been five years in counting we tried to have children but due to medical reasons ware unable to. And we had tried sur ga si. They decided on adoption. They signed with an agency in september. It felt like a guarantee. And Everything Else<\/a> we had done, nothing was guaranteed and this felt guaranteed four months later on january 31st anguish. I was stunned. Its not something that you ever expect. Without any warning to clients the iac filed for bankruptcy and sent out an email and shut down. Money from hopeful clients out the window. 14,000. Right up front . Yes they say thats nothing compared to the emotional toll. You place a lot of hope in this. I dont know, to take that away so abruptly was i dont know, pretty awful. The nonprofit filed for Chapter Seven<\/a> bankruptcy which means its out of business. Proximately 400 adoptions in the bay area were in progress and 1800 nationwide, many more have been left in limbo, some people have been waiting to adopt for two years. They informed clients with a brief email there would be no one to take questions by phone and email or in person at the office. After numerous requests for comment, we finally caught up with the president of the board of directors outside his home. What do you have to say about all the people who have put their hopes in you and spent money and time . What do you say . Were heart broken over it of course. 2 investigators learned three days before declaring bankruptcy they were making presentations and signing up clients and asking them for money. Thats not something the department has authority over. Its an agreement between the individual and the business. If you knew you were going bankrupt why were people going in . We didnt know we were going bankrupt. We didnt have a good january. We couldnt sustain three bad months. Nothing the state can do. We dont have authority. Its a civil matter. The state has stepped in, first the department of social services retrieved these. The 34 years of files dh are now locked in storage. We had truckloads. 800 boxes. A lot of history. The department is working on getting the sensitive documents back to the clients. They cant remember a bankruptcy this big and sudden. Were not process of triaging those and going through the files and determining at what point in each case this are. We are all adoptive parents ourselves. We cant we were just in this to help other people get adopted. Tax records show they have been struggling financially the past few years. Adoption placements were also on the decline. The final steps will happen here in Bankruptcy Court<\/a> in downtown oakland to divide what little money is left, about 57 thousand dollars. An initial hearing is scheduled for mid march. Im sorry, council asked me not to talk. When this gets further down the road i would be happy to sit down and discuss it with you. Families arent hopeful of getting their money back. Some have spent upwards of 25 thousand dollars and their dreams of raising a child are delayed. Their trust in the process damaged. All our eggs were in that one basket. Its deaf stating.
