We are live in emoryville to explain what is next for some of them. Reporter there are more than 13,000 people in the east bayh loan who lost those Unemployment Benefits overnight. The number is nearly triple for the entire bay area. Relief is not likely to come any time soon. Congress did not extend benefits for the long term unemployed before it adjourned for the holidays and with lawmakers not expected to return to washington until after the new year many families are going to about struggle. We spoke to the executive director of the Work Force Board. He said people looking for work need to freshen their skill set and be open minded to nontraditional work opportunities. New this morning Oakland Police say a shooting victim is in grave condition. Last night officers responded to a report of gun fire on the 2300 block of 96 avenue. They found a man suffering from a gun shot wound. He was rushed to the hospital where he is listed in grave condition. There are no suspects. Oakland police are looking 20th who shot and killed a man driving near a school. Residents heard gun shots about 11 15 yesterday morning. The car came to a stop in front of prescott elementary and the mans family later identified him. Family members say they hoped his death will not lead to more violence. He is my nephew. Her family said they found a Long Term Care facility in Southern California that agreed to take over her care a nursing home in the south bay had agreed but then changed its mind. Reporter doctors declared her brain dead following complications from surgery a judge rule that the hospital can remove her from life support after 5 00 p. M. On monday. Her attorney is planning to file another restraining order to block that people are concerned about the number of pedestrian deaths. The news is reporting there have been 21 traffic related deaths this year and thats 26 if you include bikes. Thats the highest total since 1997. Police say most of the incidents involve people crossing high traffic areas at night and outside of crosswalks. The victims range from three to 82. Health officials in santa clara say the season starts when 10 of the cases test positive for the flu. For weeks it had been at 6 but this past week it jumped to 19 . The solution is the flu shot. Its vet the shot, wash your hand, avoid close contact with people that are sick. Doctors say this years flu shots effective at preventing this seasons flu. Santa clara Health Officials say during the last flu season there was one death from the flu nationwide. This season there have been four so far. An outbreak of noravirus at a east bay nursing home appears to be contained. 30 people in walnut creek were treated last week the Health Department said all the affected patients and workers have recovered. Investigators did not find a source of the infection and that outbreak is especially troubling for people being treated for other health issues. They are at greater risk. People can die from it. Its usually because it aggravates an under lying condition. Health workers say they expect to see the virus infections rise this time of year. It affects about 20 Million People in the United States yearly. A new law that takes effect january first is urging schools to stock up on epi pens to help children with life threatening Food Allergies. That new law doesnt require the school to stock them but it does give them incentives if they do. Some say Food Allergies are a growing problem. They have increased by about 50 in the last decade. Currently approximately two to 6 of all children have some form of food allergy. If you think about that thats about one to two children in every classroom in america on average. Individual states will have to pass their own versions of the law before schools can get the injections. With very little training any staff member can use it in an emergency. The new year will bring a new law that closes a loophole letting teen drivers use voice texting. It bans them from using them a change last year to a texting while driving law lets drivers use voice programs to dictate texts but didnt exclude Young Drivers. The new law will and teen drivers will be safer for it removing from that is becoming increasingly difficult especially for the young generation. We are trying to bring them back to the very basic thing of when you are behind a wheel you need to drive. Officer hill said while many young people consider can themselves good drivers they are most at risk for crashing because they lack the experience to deal with unexpected hazards in the road.
