As we look at temperatures in the mountains, teents, 20 in reno. A lot of cloud cover spilling in here this week. Highs today, low to mid60s. A few pushth the upper 60s. Heres sal. Weve had a little bit of trouble on the 580 commute in the livermore valley. Not only 580. But also 84. 580 is slow but i might recommend that you stay on it, right through the dublin area. Theres a problem on 580 near actually, its on 84 near vinehill. This is a headon crash. A lot of people use 84 as an alternate to 580 this morning. I would recommend staying on 580. This headon collision near vinehill is going to be affecting a lot of the traffic on 84 heading on south. I would recommend staying on 580 and using 680. It will be a tough one. 680 is tough heading down out of sunol or pleasanton to su sunol. Lets take a look at the hayward commute. Southbound 880 is moderate. Live pictures. I want to show you the traffic at the toll plaza is backed you for a 15minute backed up for a 15minute delay. More extensive last week but nothing major. 237, the old tried and true, it will be stop and go as you drive westbound towards the santa clara valley. Lets go back to the desk. Developing news in San Francisco where a man was found stabbed to death just hours ago. Police rushed to an Apartment Building at Market Street and octavia just before 3 30 this morning. Ktvus Tara Moriarty says the police appear to be narrowing the search for a suspect. Tara . Reporter well, a halfhour ago, officers wrapped under whats called a cold show in a nearby alley. Thats where a witness will sit in a patrol car and a roid out suspects one by one parade out suspects one by one. We saw them bring out one latinawoman and two latino males and held up a red jersey to help identify. So the person responsible never left the building. There were a dozen patrol cars. Police fielded off every exit. This unfolding before 3 30 this morning in an Apartment Building off market and okay tavgia streets. A 911 caller octavia streets. A 911 caller said there was a body in the lobby of the hallway and we responded and found a person stabbed to death. Reporter the coroner has removed the body. Were not sure how many times he was stabbed but theres obviously a lot of blood in side. The victim is from San Francisco. Were not sure if he lives here but the police are trying to get ahold of his family before they release his name. Tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. New this morning, in oakland, several gas lines at an oakland duplex were ruptured a car smashed through a fence and hit the side of that building. This happened boulevard 1 00 a. M. Near ney and ritchie streets in oakland. Police evacuated the surrounding area. Once the gas leak was capped off, people were allowed to go back home. Police are telling us here at ktvu news the driver of that car fled the scene. Pg e should be on the scene this morning to repair those broken gas lines. 7 05. Later today, well learn more about the Major New Development involving the oakland girl who was declared brain dead last month. Jahi mcmath has been quietly released from Childrens Hospital in oakland. Alex savidge joins us live now to tell us why there is so much secrecy about her new location. Good morning, alex. Reporter well, good morning doing good morning to you. The family wont say where she is. But she will go to a longterm facility. In all likelihood, its a place in new york that said it is willing to accept her. Theres concerns about safety and security for jahi and other patients at the facility. Thats why the family does not want to confirm the location of where she will be headed. Its been more than three weeks since she was declared brain dead. Last night she left Childrens Hospital here in oakland. She remained on a ventilator as she was taken from the hospital in a private ambulance before 8 00. This is video provided to us by jahis family. You can see a caravan of cars leaving the hospital. She suffered cardiac arrest after a complication from a tonsillectomy. Because she was declared legally dead, Childrens Hospital had to release jahi to the custody of the Coroners Office and the coroner in turn gave the girl to her family. The familys attorney wouldnt talk specifically about where jahi was taken after leaving the hospital. But he says the teenager is having permanent breathing and feeding tubes inserted. They are needed to transport her to that longterm care center. Doctors here would not perform those prosecutors on a person declared legally dead. Jahis fragile. While were happy, shes out. Shes not out of the woods in terms of her own health because right now, shes in transit. So we ask that people still keep her in her thoughts and prayers. Reporter jahis family wont name the facility where shes going but one possible option is new Beginnings Community center in medford new york. Thats where the director said shes had discussions about the Family Moving there. They say they help patients recover from traumatic brain injuries. The director said shes looking forward to treating jahi. She can come through this. We need to she deserves and she needs to have the chance that all of us here at new beginnings have had. Reporter in a statement Childrens Hospital oakland said our hearts go out to the family as they grieve for this sad situation and we wish them closure and peace. The attorney representing the jahi family said she will be ready for transport later on this morning with those permanent breathing and feeding tubes insert. But the familys attorney will not say when and how she will be transported to that Long Term Care facility. Live this morning in oakland. Alex savidge, ktvu channel 2 news. This heartbreaking case began on deas 9th when jahi mcmath went into the hospital. She suffered serious complications that lead to a heart attack. On december 12th she was declared brain dead. December 20th, there was a restraining order to keep her on the ventilator. Your time is 7 08. Firefighters in pinole telling people make sure your chimneys and wood stoves are inspected and cleaned this, this afternoon a smoke explosion severely damaged a house on pinole family road. The family saw smoke coming from an electrical outlet on the second floor. Shortly after that, the explosion happened. It blew out the secondstory windows, the back wall and damaged the roof. Everyone inside the house escaped injuries. The fire was caused by a leaking pipe on the familys wood stove. The cause of that smoke explosion is still under investigation. Freezing weather is moving across much of the nation. Temperatures are the coldest theyve been in almost 20 years. By wednesday, 140 Million People are expected to be shivering in zerodegree weather or even colder. Today, nashville, tennessee and atlanta, georgia will be colder than anchorage, alaska. The aspen, colorado airport remains closed after a plane crashed there that killed one person. It happened when the small plane was trying to land yesterday afternoon. According to the air Traffic Control report, the pilot was reporting high winds while coming into land. He circled and attempted to land three times before the crash happened. Witnesses say the plane flipped over and burst into flames. They were able to put the flames out very quickly, quick enough so the fire did not make it inside the cabin. The planes co pilot was killed. Two other people were injured. The airport will stay closed while the ntsb investigates. A skiing accident has put the leader of germany on the sidelines for the next few weeks. Angela merkel suffered a pelvic injury while skiing in switzerland. The injury was pan incomplete bone fracture that will require her to rest for three weeks. Its unclear if anyone else was involved in thezying accident in the skiing accident. A republican senator from wisconsin says he will file a lawsuit today over the government policy that lets members of congress and their staffs get subsidies as part of the Affordable Care act. Senator ron johnson will argue the policy forces him to comply with a rule el thinks is illegal he thinks is illegal. He also believes the policy hurts his relationship with constituents because it gives him and other congressional employees special treatment. Today was supposed to be the deadline for people who signed up on californias Health Exchange to pay their first premium. Now the deadline has been extended. Covered california is extending the deadline to january 15th. Now, in the last two weeks of december, the volume of enrollment applications increased a lot for the exchange. And the Insurance Companies since it is taking longer for them to process the applications, the decision was made to extend the deadline the premiums have to be paid. 7 17. Lawmakers in washington, d. C. Get back to work today with some unfinished business, including whether to extend benefits for 1. 3 million long term unemployed americans. Democrats want to extend the emergency Unemployment Benefits which expired december 28th. But republicans say they want to explore other options including new job training initiative. Are you willing to work with republicans to find a way to offset the unemployment benefit . Weve never offset emergency spending. Foolishness. Ive always said it needs to be paid for but we also need to do something for longterm unemployed people. We need to create something new that would create scrobs. President obama back at the white house, has urged congress to pass the benefits extension. I want to go to the live picture and show you that southbound 101 is not doing well at all because of that crash. Now the best way for you to get around it, the alternate route is to go down to 6th street and get on 280, 280 will take you past it. You can rejoin 101 at the 280 interchange. You will save yourself a lot of time by doing that or you can use propotrero avenue potrero avenue. You dont want to get on the freeway south of market onle 0 that chance on 80. Moving along and taking a look at the bay bridge toll plaza, thats a moderate delay. Five to ten minutes, its more than we had last week. Things like it looks like were easing into a monday. No major problems, southbound 880 now, as you can see from theres a little bit of slow traffic here right from 280 until about union city and then it gets a little bit better than that. They are all waiting hoping to rebook their flight. This same scenario is playing out at sfo where more flights have been canceled. More than 40. On flightaware. Com, theres been 3100 flights that have been canceled today in the u. S. Now the problems all started when the storm hit back east last thursday and friday and over the weekend, there was snow in the midwest, that worsened the conditions. Passengers have been trying to rebook flights. Those who are trying to fly out of san jose who had their Flights Canceled today are not happy. Tired of standing here. They want to see their dad. They are really unhappy. Reporter did you anticipate this . No, i didnt even know. I just got here i just got here and i saw this big line. We have to wait. Reporter the hardesthit airports are chicago, cleveland, la guardia, j. F. K. And boston. Cancellations and delays vary by airline. Sfo is reporting 41 cancellations today. Thats departing and arriving flights. San jose has eight and oakland has six cancellations. And back out here live, theres sort of a lull in traffic. It was a little busier earlier. But we did notice, there was some people loading their suitcases back into taxi cakes. Those people on the chicago flight, we spoke to a couple and they couldnt rebook their flight today. They will have to spend another night in san jose. New this morning, a stolen car was recovered after a Short Police Chase in la fayette. Police tried to pull the car over for speeding on eastbound highway 24 near the orinda exit. This was about 3 00 this morning. The driver then led police on a short chase to the mt. Diablo boulevard exit before crashing into a light pole. The driver was taken into custody. Two other people inside that car got away. 7 35. Were learning more this morning about the bomb scare that diverted a plane that left sfo bound for new york. These are exclusive pictures sent to us by a passenger from inside a secure waiting area at the kansas city airport. Thats where American Airlines flight 24 was diverted to yesterday after someone found what looked like a flash drive taped to the wall of one of the bathrooms. Were now hearing that the devis was a small camera disguised to look like a flash drive. The case is still being investigated. 7 35. Firefighters in oakland are still looking for the cause of a weekend fire at an abandoned warehouse. Get out. This video is expected to help in that investigation. The fire started yesterday morning near embarcadero and oak street. Ktvu news spoke to a man who captured the flames on this cell phone moments on his cell phone moments after the fire started. I was documenting it and i heard a noise. I heard somebody talking. And when i looked over i noticed the flames. Theres still no official word on the cause of the fire. But investigators say Homeless People have been sleeping inside that abandoned warehouse. 7 39. A 5year parcel tax will be debated today at a supervisors meeting today in east contra costa county. The Fire District needs funding to keep five fire stations open. They will recommend a vam id measure for a tax that starting at 98 a year and grows 3 every year. That meeting by the way begins at 6 30 this evening in oakland. 16 members of a marin county strike team are in humboldt county fighting a major fire. This one is burning 40 miles east. Its burned 350 acres. Its 40 contained. The Strike Team Leader say its rare to be fighting a wildfire this time of the year. But again, its also the driest year weve seen in decades. 7 40. Today, hundreds are expected to pay their final respects to a popular Northern California catholic priest. A funeral is set to take place later this morning aing at the Sacred Heart Church in eureka. Yesterday dozens gathered in honor of father eric freed. His body was discovered in the rectory new years day. 43yearold Gary Lee Bullock was arrested in connection with the fathers death. Police are now trying to figure out a motive. Tomorrow, San Francisco supervisors will honor an 84 yearold activist hit by a car fatally last month in chinatown. The death of isabel on jackson street, its renewing safety concerns about the streets of chinatown. The recent city report found that chinatown has the highest rate of pedestrian injuries in San Francisco. Coming up on 7 41. A bay area man feels betrayed by his favorite store after his credit card information was stolen. Jessie diaz says his best buy credit card was declined when he recently tried to use it. Charges totaling 1500, though, showed up on his bill for items he did not buy. He says he complained to the stores general manager and was told he is not the only victim. He informed me that i was not the only case. He says, theres several other cases. He says the manager told him a store employee stole personal information from diaz and other customers. Officially, though, best buy only released a statement saying were working with local Law Enforcement. We cannot comment further given that there is an onhaving investigation. People living in a pacific Mobile Home Park, they are fighting a rent increase that could double their rent. A dozen people at the pacific skies estate Mobile Home Park say they received notices their rent could go up from 800 to 1900 a month. The Mobile Home Park says that increase is needed to pay for 1. 5 million in improvements. This whole issue goes before the city council this morning. House my tortie lead Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi is scheduled to speak at San Francisco city. The judge granted a partial injunction allowing accreditation to be kept until a trial could be held. The school was scheduled to lose it in july due to financial mismanagement. A loss could force the school to close. Stanford announced its one of six schools to split a huge research grant. They will use their 90 million share to study some types of cancer that may occur because of cancer stem cells. Well have more details as they are available. 7 47. Cracking down on the commute to Silicon Valley. Ktvus pam cook is in our newsroom now, telling us about the fight, pam, over those google buses. Thats right. Ktvu has learned that San Francisco mayor ed lee will announce a Pilot Program today to address the problems surrounding private shuttle buses at public bus stops. Now, google, yahoo , genentic, many other Silicon Valley companies have private shuttles to take employees to work. You are looking at a protest over those buses. People who drive on the freeways appreciate that there are fewer cars on the road but people sliferping in San Francisco, especially in the Mission District area, are not happy about those buses. This is a protest from last month. The protesters say that the shuttle buses not only disrupt regular Public Bus Service by using those muni bus stops but they are not paying as well. Ktvu news has learned that a new Pilot Program will be announced today by mayor ed lee. That will require the shuttle operators to pay to use the muni bus stops and it may also include restricted hours to drop off and pick up the passengers. I just spoke to someone who lives in the neighborhood where the shuttle buses pick up and drop off passengerses. She says cars that stop to pick someone up can be fined 271. This morning, police are investigating a deadly stabbing reported just before 3 30 this morning and it was in the lobby of an Apartment Building. Ktvu channel 2 reporter Tara Moriarty is there and she says people who live in the building were not allowed to leave during this police investigation. Good morning, tara. Reporter well, good morning. Yes, this building was on lockdown pretty much all morning. Just after 7 00 residents were allowed out. Many said they were late for work. Its because officers wouldnt let anyone leave. They sealed off every exit and fire escape. Behind me is the lobby where the body of the person stabbed was found. The Large Police Presence here happened all morning long on the at the Apartment Building on market and octavia. The 911 call coming in just before 3 30. Investigators then conducted a cold show same peculiar to a lineup but in the street similar to a lineup but in the street. Officers paraded a string of spbing. We saw a latina woman and two latino women. Police showed a red jersey to a witness sitting in a parked police car. Now a lawyer for one of the teenaged defendants in the wrongful death lawsuit has filed new legal papers. He claims one of the late teens parents cannot sue because he is not her biological father. So far, there has been no response from audrey pottss parents. A Major New Development involving jahi mcmath, the oakland girl declared brain dead. Shes been quietly released from Childrens Hospital in oakland. Ktvus alex savidge joining us live with reaction from the head of the medical facility in new york thats stepped forward to help. Good morning, alex. Reporter good morning to you. At this point, jahis family wont say exactly where she is or exactly where shes going. They say thats for safety reasons. We know the family is intending to send her to a longterm care facility. In all likelihood, its a facility in new york that said it is ready and willing to accept jahi. Three weeks ago, she was declared brain dead by doctors. Last night just before 8 00 she was taken away from Childrens Hospital in a private ambulance. The girl remained on a ventilator. This is video provided by jahis family, you can see a caravan of cars. Because she was legally declared dead, they had to release her to the custody of the Coroners Office and the coroner gave the girl to the family. They would not talk about where she was taken after she left the hospital. But the director of the new beginning center in bedford, new york says her facility is ready to care for jahi. The team that ive been working with, you know, we put an affidavit into the court saying that i was willing to help jahi in any way we could. So she got the extra eight days and were so happy to see she will have a chance now. Reporter jahi suffered cardiac arrest following complications from tonsil surgery performed on december 9th to cure her sleep apnea. Jahis family wont name the facility shes going to. Sheas for the security and thats for the security and privacy and safety of patients there. The teenager is having permanent breathing and ed fooing tubes inserted. They and feeding tubes inserted. They are needed to transport her. Doctors here at Childrens Hospital would not perform that surgery on someone legally dead. Jaly is getting a place where she can have the procedures done. Its a much more difficult time than it would have been had childrens found it in its heart to give her a feeding tube and breathing tube. Reporter in a statement about last nights transfer, Childrens Hospital oakland said our hearts go out to the family as they grieve for this sad situation. We wish them closure and peace. The attorney for jahis fame said she will be ready for transport sometime later this morning with the tubes inserted. But the attorney will not say how and when she will be taken to a longterm facility. Live in oakland, alex savidge, ktvu channel 2 news. This case started on december 9 wheth when jahi went into the hospital for tonsil surgery. She suffered serious complications. On december 12th, she was declared brain tead. On december 20th, a judge issued a restraining order to keep Childrens Hospital from taking jahi off the ventilator. On december 30th, the order was extended until january 7th, tomorrow, to give the time family to move jahi. Last night, jahi mcmath was qi ruttily released quietly released to her mother. Several gas lines at a duplex in oakland were severed after a car drove through a fence and into the side of a building. It happened before 1 00 a. M. Near ney and ritchie streets in oakland. Police evacuated the surrounding area. Once the gas leak was capped people were allowed to return to their homes. Officers tell us here at ktvu news that the driver fled the scene. Pg e is expected in the area this morning to repair the broken lines. Firefighters in pinole want people to clean and inspect their chimneys and wood stoves after a fire and smoke explosion severely damaged a home. Last night, fire crews were called to this home on pin nome valley road after the family saw smoke pinole valley road after the family saw smoke. Shortly after that an explosion blew out the secondf story window, the black wall and dankged the roof. Everyone inside escaped harm. The fire was caused by a leaking pipe on a wood stove. The cause of the explosion is still under investigation. 8 09. Police in petaluma still searching for the person who stabbed a man in a dennys parking lot yesterday morning. The aspen, colorado airport remains closed after a plane crashed there killed one person. It happened when the small plane was trying to land yesterday afternoon. According to the air Traffic Control recording, the pilot was reporting high winds while coming in toland. He circled and attempted to land three times before the crash happened. Witnesses say the plane flipped over and burst into flames. They were able to put the flames out very quickly. Quick enough so the fire did not make it inside the cabin. The planes copilot was killed. Twor other people on board were injured. The airport will remain closed while the ntsb investigates. There is a lot of passengers inside who are frustrated because they had their flight to chicago, ohare canceled. That airport has been hit hard more than 1500 flights in and out of ohare have been canceled. Thats affecting a lot of travelers here in the bay area. Inside terminal a, the san jose airport, there is a long line of those passengers waiting, hoping to rebook their flights. Passengers are telling us that a flight isnt available until tomorrow at sfo, the weather in the midwest is also affecting flights. More than 40 have been canceled. One woman we spoke to told us this is the second time her sons flight got canceled. Yesterday, we were in San Francisco and he was there for an hour and they canceled the flight. Told him to come here to get this flight this morning and he and it to the canceled again. Now we dont know. Reporter on flightaware. Someone found what looked like a flash drive taped to the walls of one of the bathrooms. Were hearing that device was really a small camera disguised to look like a flash drive. It happened just before 3 30 this morning in the lobby of an Apartment Building at market and okay tashia boulevard octavia boulevard. Jahi mcmath has quietly been released from Childrens Hospital in oakland. Alex savidge joining us live now getting us reaction from the head of a medical facility in new york thats stepped forward to help out. Good morning, alex. Reporter well, the family is ultimately planning to move jahi to a longterm care facility. In all likelihood, its a place in new york that has said its willing to accept jahi. Doctors declared her brain dead more than three weeks ago. Shes remained on a ventilator ever since that time. Last night just before 8 00 she was taken from Childrens Hospital here in oakland by private ambulance. This is video provided to us by jahis family. You can see a caravan of cars leaving the hospital. Because she was legally declared dead, Childrens Hospital had to release jahi to the custody of the Coroners Office and the coroner gave the girl to her family. The familys attorney wouldnt talk specifically about where jahi was taken after leaving. Who. But the director of the new Beginnings Center in bedford, new york, says her facility is ready to care for jahi. Its a facility that treats children with traumatic brain injuries and the director says these understands what jahis family is going through. Basically he was on full life support and he was in a coma. At one point they talked about taking him off. He would have no quality of life and we believed that he was in there and he did come out of his coma. But it takes time. Reporter jahi suffered cardiac arrest following consill surgery to cure consill surgery to cure sleep apnea. They wont name the facility shes going to. The teenager is now having permanent breathing and feeding tubes inserted. Those are necessary to take her to a longterm care center and doctors here at Childrens Hospital wouldnt perform that surgery on someone who is legally dead. Jahis uncle says moving the girl out of the hospital is a huge step. Were very grateful, very proud, we want to thank everyone that supported us. Everyone that stood in our corner. Everyone that prayed for us. Everyone that helped donate to help make this possible. Reporter in a statement, Childrens Hospital oakland said our hearts go out to the family as they grieve for this sad situation and we wish them closure and peace. Even though a number of doctors here declared jahi brain dead, her family believes once shes at a longterm care center, she can make a full recovery. Joe hundley pleaded guilty in october after reaching a plea agreement with federal prosecutors. He now faces a year in jail and 100,000 fine for the incident that happened a year ago. And prosecutors say hundley used a racial slur to refer to the 19monthold boy who is africanamerican. They say hundley hit the child in the eye during a flight from minneapolis to atlanta. 8 48. They have to pay or they have to go. Thats a very Emotional Message people are sending San Franciscos mayor over corporate shuttle buses. Pam cook is in the newsroom with more on the flight over the fight over the commute in the Silicon Valley. Ktvu has learned that ed lee will announce a Pilot Program today to address the problems surrounding private shuttle buses using public bus stops. Now, google, yahoo , genentic and other companies have private shuttles to take employees from where they live in San Francisco to where they work in Silicon Valley. People who drive on the freeways, appreciate there are fewer cars on the road. People living in San Francisco, especially in the Mission District and the marina, they are not happy about the buses. They say the shuttle buses disrupt regular Public Service by using muni stops and they also point out that drivers of regular passenger cars can be fined 271 for stopping at a bus stop but the shuttles are using them for free. Now, on my facebook page, i just heard from one person who lives in the maria. She says she would like to see improvements in the relationship between the shuttle operators in the city. She would like them to Work Together ba but she states in addition to the muni stop, some of the shuttles often create their own stops on very small streets that are not designed for shuttles and buses. Now, again, ktvu news has learned a new Pilot Program will be announced today by mayor ed lee. That will require the shuttle operators to pay to use the muni bus stops.
