Later this morning millions of people across the state will take part in a largescale earthquake drill that is known as a great california shakeout. Alex is live at a downtown in downtown oakland where there is going to be an event. Reporter a lot of schools all over the bay area and across the state will be taking part later today and here in downtown oakland experts will be talking all about preparedness during a shakedown event that is going to be happening here at frank ogawa plaza. They will be filling up the plaza just outside of city hall for what is called the oakland shakeout to celebrate ada. Among other things there will be a flash mob of people with disabilities demonstrating how to drop, cover and hold on. That is the best way to avoid serious injury or even death during a large earthquake. This is one of many events around the bay area. Part of the eighth annual great california shakeout earthquake drill gets underway at 10 15 this morning. About 10. 5,000,000 people in our state will be taking part. Across the state people will be participating in this drill at schools and universities, businesses and government agencies. Here in the bay area part will be taking place part in the shakeout and when engineers will trigger an earthquake alarm it will automatically slow all trains and there will be a public announcement me to passengers about the drill. Keep that in mind later on this morning. Also we did get a reminder yesterday and earthquake reminder of sorts when there was a swarm of more than 30 quakes that hit san ramon, the largest of them a threepoint zero. We are preparing for much bigger quakes the match would be the event here features what is called the big shaker, that is the worlds biggest mobile earthquake simulator. We will i understand we will be hopping inside of it later on this morning. We have a man made quake happening right now thanks to chip on. We will have a live report with more details about this proposed Ballot Initiative coming up at 5 worry five. There is some new controversy this morning surrounding San Franciscos sheriff. We learned that back on september 18 sheriff the sheriff field his firearms requirement at the shooting range. According to Department Regulations anyone who fails the test has up to 21 calendar days of the original tell you date to take the test again. The sheriff did not do that and some of his deputies say that is disappointing. We are all required to go to the range. We are all required to keep up what we call perishable skills, because our job, first and foremost, is public safety. The sheriff issued this statement saying the sheriff is not required to carry a firearm by state law. If you just carry a department firearm only then do see fall within the requirement for department qualification. Applications are due tomorrow to serve on a Blue Ribbon Commission examining the Santa Clara County jail system. It is come under heavy scrutiny after deputies were charged with killing an inmate at the main jail in san jose earlier this year. At the bay bridge toll plaza it has been light although we are seeing a little bit of a delay at some of those cash lanes now. Usually by 5 30 is when we start seeing a delay here get a little bit bigger. Lets go to steve and the weather. We have mostly cloudy skies. We do have some thunderstorm activity in the San Joaquin Valley, the southern santa clara valley. A little salt going right over marin county. You may be getting a little bit of precipitation there. San jose has had some light rain as well. There is another cell moving in but down towards monterey and towards the valley are the best opportunities. You can see things are lighting up a little bit. The line is from monterey east. That looks to be the best opportunity. 60s and 70s and mostly cloudy conditions with maybe a few more breaks to the north. A little bit of a delta breeze. That is a sign that maybe the high and midlevel clouds and low clouds are in place and it could trigger a thundershower or two. The low is a little too far south but we are close enough. Not as hot as it has been but the lows are up due to the cloud cover. It is a very muggy pattern. 80s and near 90s for some. 60s and 70s closer to the bay. That will bump the low we have right now out of the way for friday. That opens the door for cooler patterns going into the weekend.
