Reporter Alameda City Council was sent to vote on a twomonth moratorium on rent increases. According to witnesses, the landlords arrived early and filled the Council Chambers so there was no more space for the members of the Tenants Group to go inside and voice their concerns. That led to a very tense atmosphere outside counsel chambers. Investigators say the suspect walked into a secondfloor classroom yesterday morning and stabbed a student with an 810 inch hunting knife. Police say the subject stabbed a construction worker trying to break up what he thought was a fight between students. The suspect went outside and stabbed two other people before police shot and killed him. The first shot, didnt floor him, but the second shot did and he kind of tumbled to the ground. It was rather scary. I thought they were real shots. Investigators have not disclosed a possible motive. They did search a dormitory yesterday. Only to say say that they were widening the crime scene. They did not say the suspect lived there. The victims were stabbed are expected to recover from their injuries. Flu season is here. Health Officials Say now is a good time to get a flu shot, before the flu becomes widespread. The person who died had not gotten their vaccination yet. The Santa Clara CountyPublic HealthDepartment Says the deceased was an adult between the age of 18 and 65 and had underlying chronic medical conditions. The person got sick in october and was hospitalized in intensive care and ended up dying of respiratory failure. The flu season typically runs from october through may and the centers for Disease Control and prevention says the predominant flu types circulating is h3n2, the same as last year. The only thing we can say that flu is pretty unpredictable but we think if it does turn out that its a flu a h three season, it may be more severe than average. Last year the flu season peaked in midjanuary and killed a total of 78 people in california. Health Officials Say this years of vaccine appears to be matched well to h3n2. Those who are most at risk are considered highpriority groups, children under five, the elderly, pregnant women and those with chronic conditions and weakened immune systems but they are still advising that everybody should still be getting a flu vaccine to protect themselves. Just a couple hours from now, nurses at marin general are expected to walk off the job. They are planning a 12 hour strike drawing attention to what they call Workplace Safety problems. It is part of a major consolidation plan following the merger of kraft and heinz. The factory on halcyon drive in san leandro is part of one of seven plants in the u. S. Although San Francisco registrar of voters says all precincts have technically reported, there are still tens of thousands of ballots not yet counted. Staffers at the Elections Office worked all night tabulating votes but a larger than expected number of provisional and mailin ballots arrived there this week. Theres actually a new law in california that allows Elections Departments to count ballots if they are postmarked as of election day, theres some tight races still and thousands of ballots to be counted. But if the results remain the same and prop f loses, supporters say they will bring up the issue next year before the new board of supervisors.
