Investigators in San Francisco right now are searching for the cause of a fire that destroyed a tire shop and also forced 21 people to run for their lives. It started yesterday morning just before 8 00 at the Rolling Stock tire shop at 16th and shotwell street. Heavy smoke and flames, shooting out of the roof. You can see this as far away as oakland and marin county. The flames spread to the Apartment Building next door causing smoke and water damage but no one was hurt. I saw a man knocking on the windows, shouting that the building next door is on fire. My dog woke us up. Lets go outside. More than 100 firefighters battled the flames and the red cross are helping those who were evacuated. A firefighter suffered a minor injury but everyone in the Apartment Building were able to to get out safely. The cause of the fire is still being investigated. Firefighters say it started somewhere in the attic. It is not considered suspicious. On the weekends they see the most writers of any station come through here, people coming in to San Francisco from other parts of the bay area, out of town, taking day trips to the city. The impression many of those visitors are left with is not necessarily a good one. One of the glaring issues here, the station has an unfinished ceiling which has exposed beams, pipes and wires, work got started on the ceiling a few years ago but it was never finished. Another problem, the elevators and escalators often smell like urine or maybe even something worse, but according to the San Francisco chronicle, part has put together a report on how to modernize the station. That study recommends 94 million in improvements, but bart plans to start out by putting about 30 million toward repair, so thats the initial amount of money that will be put towards repairs and that work will make the nations entrance is more inviting and less cluttered and will improve the lighting which can be uneven here inside the station. Alex savidge in tents in San Francisco. The city of San Francisco reportedly is checking the safety requirements for fireplace chimneys just in case of earthquakes. Whenever theres a big quake, chimneys often severely damage homes and properties. With a simple example of that in napa last summer including a teenager badly hurt when the chimney at his home collapsed on top of him. According to the examiner, one city report is recommending seismic retrofits especially for chimneys located near streets or sidewalks. At this point we dont know if retrofitting will be mandatory. Three people were shot, one person killed. Two others were hurt. Police say this may have happened inside a subway station and then spilled out into the streets.
