We talked with a woman and her husband. They say they were out with a walk with their dog buster when the dog heard a noise and ran off ahead of them. Well be talking to our political reporter in a couple of minutes to talk about the fact that everyone is taken by surprise who may be replacing him, were also monitoring reaction from washington. Former House Speaker nancy pelosi just called the decision to step down seismic and she said that it seeks to what you call its a stark independent dation of what she calls disarray in the house of the republicans. That reaction coming in a second ago. Well talk to ross in a few minutes. There are all kinds of political rammycations. The president ial candidates. All kinds of things. Well talk about it. Were also talking about your weather and traffic and Steve Paulson has your forecast for the day. Cooler coast and bay. Its on its way. If you want to run for the weekend. We have a little bit of a fog bank starting to form. It started to sneak in about 6 00, 7 00 and now its there. Its very shallow but its a sign of things to come for a cooler pattern after a wacky day yesterday. Anywhere from 70 to 90 degrees. Not today. You can see shallow fog bank. Some of that fog, though, will work its way towards the coast as well. 50s there. 60s for some. Inland temps will be pretty warm. Not much of a delta breeze. Less than 10 is usually a sign that not much is happening. I was looking at seven different sites in San Francisco. They have all turned westerly. Not that strong. A little bit of fog has made it in parts of the city. Mostly sunny. Nice to mild. Cooler, coast and in San Francisco, 90s through the interior. 60s, 70s over by the beaches. All right, sal. 8 03. Any friday light or any more than that . Its not bad but it certainly is not light. Lets take a look at some of these commutes, steve. Well start off with a look at the eastshore freeway and from the carquinez bridge to the maze. 38 minutes. Ive seen it much worse. Sometime early this week it was almost an hour, about 38 minutes, still kind of a slog there as you drive through richmond and get out to berkeley. The traffic is gonna be busy. The commute here on westbound bay bridge is backed up, we do have some slow traffic as you drive into San Francisco, 30 minutes or more as you wait at the toll plaza. There is a brandnew accident in oakland. Northbound 880 at fifth. Its right here in oakland. Thats right before jack london square. Its a motorcycle accident. Now hearing it could be blocking almost the entire freeway. This might turn into a sig alert. Northbound 880 at 5th. Brandnew crash there. Well keep an eye on it. Well let you know. Now back to the desk. All right, sal. Thank you. Back to the big breaking political news story. The surprise announcement this morning, were getting reports that the speaker of the house is stepping down. But it wont happen immediately. The announcement came down just more than an hour ago. Joining us on the phone. Ktvus political and reporter ross, thank you for waking up with us. This took almost everyone by surprise. Didnt it . Reporter i can tell you, its the most Surprising Development weve heard in months. Speaker boner himself a boehner himself only making this decision after his emotional appearance with the pope. He said that was the moment that chrisalizeed crystallized his decision. He said hes doing it with prolonged leadership turmoil and this, of course, is in reference to the looming government shut down coming at the end of september. You know, the speaker has has the job in january of 2011. Thats when nancy pelosi hand handed the gavel over to him. Its been hes never been able to control the far right flank of the party and now with this deadline coming up and a possible shutdown. Conservative republicans are hoping to defund planned parenthood and john boehner apparently does not believe that he wants to be any part of this, that it is likely that that could happen. There have been calls for him to step down in the past or in the last government shut down. And he wants to take himself out of the equation this time to make sure that he personally is not the distraction. The big question is who is gonna be next in line, the speaker will vacate that position and his office on october 30th. Our own representative Kevin Mccarthy from bakersfield is now the current majority leader in the house, as you know, hes the deputy speaker. Hes most likely to succeed speaker Speaker Boehner. Hes a baptist, hes ultraconservative. Hes been elected since 2006. He currently has the most support to get this. The only thing that might seem to challenge him might be ryan. If we can gauge reaction, i know when marco rubio announced the announcement by john boehner that hes stepping down, marco rubio speaking to members of the value voters summit, its a gathering of christian conservatives in d. C. The crowd went wild. I watched a clip of video. You see the people at that gathering standing and cheering and clapping upon hearing the resigning. What does that sort of reaction tell you . Reporter well, that reaction tells us what we already know that Speaker Boehner, although conservative has always had difficulty controlling, as i say, the right party. The most conservatives. You know when he was reelected speaker in 2013, he did it by the slimmest, the slim rest of margins. There have been calls for him to step down many times in the past. Its been expected for several years now and its very clear that conservatives do not believe hes on board with their agenda. In particular, the tea party that Kevin Mccarthy actually helped many of those members get elected across the country. Hes very close to them. The tea party and ultraconservatives have never liked Speaker Boehner and have always been at odds with him. Some people on one side will say the gop is in disarray. Others will say this is an incredible time for them to co less around a new direction. Reporter well, i think that there is no denying that the gop is in disarray. I mean, just to look at the current contenders for the gop nomination tells you that. I mean, everything from ultraconservatives like Mike Huckabee to unusual outsiders to donald trump. Its clear that the party has problems. They are trying to have a strong direction. And leadership right now seems its veering even more conservative, ultraconservative, thats precisely what we would have if Kevin Mccarthy becomes the new speaker. All right. Ross, get your coffee and then get in here. I would love to talk to you on the 9. See you at 9 00. Also seeing a lot of cases of iphone fever running very high at apple Stores Across the bay area. Yeah, cif tan kafton live in Christien Kafton live in San Francisco. The doors of the apple store have they opened or are they just open . Reporter the doors just opened. I got sad news. But you can see the flurry of activity going on inside. You can see how many folks are looking to walk out im excited about the new 3 d touch feature. I think it seems intuitive. Obviously the new color is kind of exciting. I know a lot of girls are excited about it. Im normally not supergirly but im excited about the new color. Well get back to Christien Kafton. The doors are open. People are buying and well get more reactions as we go through the morning. A lot of excitement there. Lets run down to the south bay. Talk about San Jose Police being tightlipped so far about the latest officerinvolved shooting. We do know that Police Responded to a call last night to check on the safety of an individual. This shooting unfolded on monterey road near the highway 101 and 85 inchaentge. Officers were called there at 6 30 last night to do a welfare check. I want to go to the coliseum camera we have near the coliseum. You can see how slow it is and up the road, northbound 880 near fifth at one of the first exits near jack london square, there is a crash. I want to show you the roof camera thats pointed down. You can tell that traffic is super light on 880 north which is at the top there because the accident is to the right. We cant see it. But you can see this accident is also causing delay, southbound as people are slowing down to take a look at it. I can show it to you on the map as well. It really has messed up the morning commute here on 880 northbound and 580 at keller westbound. Not a great alternate because we have an accident there as well with injuries. The whole thing, the whole commute in oakland is a mess. Lets go to the bay bridge which is also very slow. That is backed up for a 25, 30 minute delay before you make it on the bridge. Some temperatures will be warm by the coast. Is there any sea breeze not really. There is a little bit close to the coast but the delta breeze is not cranked up yet. Sfo, though, west at 12, hayward airport says east at 3. Its a fight between the onshore but the onshore wins out. Higher clouds, you can see those right there. Theres two systems, one lower right there. Thats moving in. That helps to increase the breeze. There is a secondary low that works towards us. Mostly sunny, cooler coast and in San Francisco. Probably around the bay. Inland though, still one more day of the 60s to 90s. Theres still very warm air aloft. For some, its going to drop a good, 15, 20 degrees. Others you will have to wait until tomorrow. Still some 90s. A few high clouds out there, the fog is making a big push. This is just from one day to the next. Just crazy. All right, steve. Thank you. It will still be warm to hot. But a little ribbon of fog has formed. Its moving into parts of the city. The breeze has returned. Its pretty shallow. Its not going to make a huge impact inland. The trend over the weekend will be to increase the fog, cool down the temps and bring cooling to those far enough away from the coast, 70 in brentwood. 56 half moon bay. Owb observe our observer said the fog is in. I expect the delta breeze to pick up tonight and howl over the weekend. An easternly breeze at hayward. West at sfo. Its picking up. If you are coming in on that ramp, you will get right on the bridge if you are using fast track. Back to the desk. Thank you. Here is a question if you or someone else ever faced a lifethreaning situation. How would you react . I november how i hoped i know how i hoped i would react. In vallejo, two men didnt think twice at all. They went inside a burning home and rescued two people. Brian flores back in the studio bar talking to talk about it be. The two people didnt flinch when they heard the calls for help. Mr. Mcintyre, how did you get pulled out . [inaudible] do you know where they went . That was Michael Mcintyre describing to firefighters how he was rescued from a burning home. He is a bubble amputee. One of the men was a City Employee working nearby. The other was tygan doing some work at a house next door. When the fire broke out, he said he dropped what he was doing after hearing screeles screams and went in. I heard somebody screaming for help. I had ran in and ran to the house. I see the amputee on the ground. I picked him up and carried him outside of the house. When tygan did that, the victim went back in to see if he could get his cell phone. He did. He helped the city worker bring out the caregiver when he did that. The cause of the fire remains under investigation as for mcintyre, he was fine and so were the two men who rescued him. The caregiver did get second and thirddegree burns on his upper body. Back to you. Thank you. Were still following the valley fire in lake county. That area is moving into a recovery phase now. Been almost two weeks now since the fire started. Pam cook back in the studio with some of the help the victims are receiving. You one of the big challenges is that winter is right around the corner and that means preventing erosion is as important right now as the cleanup. Now, the good news this morning, just in, about an hour ago, the containment on the valley fire is now 90 . Last night an Evacuation Order was lifted for the community of Anderson Springs which is one of the hardest hit areas 400 people were forced out of that neighborhood and now they are finally seeing what is left of it. Middletown was also deeply affected as we have seen by the valley fire. Last night about 1,000 people packed the grandstands at the high school there for an informational meeting about how to rebuild. They learned about what help is available from the government and also how to take precautions as the cleanup begins. Listen, wait and do it in the proper order. Dont hurry it. Ive seen some people cleaning lots already with dust clouds and dust plumes. Thats not gonna help anything. Now its time to go to work. Time to rebuild. Get er done. A lot of people feel the way he does. They are anxious to rebuild. There are signs posted throughout the burn areas warning people that not only is it considered a hazardous area. There might be toxics in there. But also to look out for unlicensed contractors or even some scams. A sign that the area is trying to get back to normal. Some good news for the kids is that middletown schools will reopen on monday and theres gonna be a portable classroom on the middle School Campus for the cobb students who were all you know, we all have children. It probably will be a little sense of comfort for them to get back to oh, yeah, routine, normalcy, comfort. The butte fire is nearing full containment. Right now we hear its 93 contained. It has burned about 7,868 acres 80 70,868 acres. President issued a declaration of disaster. The state office of Emergency Services has set up an Operations Center in san andreas, not everyone had fire insurance, including this couple. Well be okay. But there are others who wont. I cant imagine. I cant fathom. The butte fire burned more than 70,000 acres. Its now 91 contained. At least two people died in that fire. San francisco is facing a coyote problem. There are more sightings of them. We learned about an attack on a dog last night. Yeah, alex savidge is at sterngrove to explain what happened out there. Reporter good morning. This attack happened during an afternoon stroll here at sterngrown and the owners of this small dog are stunned by what happened and saddened. We talked this morning with peggy and john lowe. They were out for a walk with their dog named buster. He was off leash at the time and apparently heard a noise and ran off towards the trees. Thats when the owners of the tree heard a squeal and spotted a coyote holding that 7pound dog in its mouth. The coyote ran off clutching the dog as the owners chased after him. They searched for a couple of hours. But they couldnt find buster. This is not the first time Something Like this has happened here. There was another dog attacked here last month in sterngrown. In that case, it was a 2year old dog. That dog is recovering from his injuries after a pack of coyotes came after him. We talked with busters owners this morning and they stay they are heartbroken. The sad part, the dog park. The coyotes are taking over and the city and the state feel they have the right to that habitat. I dont know when they decide that too many are a danger. There are people that walk three, four little dogs, they wouldnt have a chance on a leash or even if its not on a leash. Reporter and the coyote population has exploded in recent years. More of the canines appear to be migrating from the suburbs into the city. Some experts believe the drought may be playing a role in all of this reducing the primary prey. Animals such as mice and in nearby ingelside terrace, neighbors have been calling police and city officials for help. The animals have apparently killed at least three cats in that part of the city. Experts say to reduce the threat to your pets, its a good idea to keep those dogs, especially small dogs on a leash and try to keep your cats and other pets indoors. Back to you. All right, alex. All right. What do you get when you cross a supermoon with a Lunar Eclipse . Its an almost once in a lifetime experience. Well be talking with a scientist next about when you can see the eclipse and why this is so rare. Good morning. Were looking at a mess in oakland. That would be 880 northbound. We had an earlier crash to blame and traffic is much slower than it normally is driving up to downtown. We have fog returning to the city and parts of the coast. It will be cooler there. But another hot day inland. Well take a look at the friday forecast and see whats in store for the weekend. We all found down my man, khan kanye, all falls down. It fits into the groove there. Brian washington, thank you for your request on sals traffic jams. You can hit us up on ktvu, hashtag, instagram. Its an event. Its something thats not happened in 32 years. This weekend, a supermoon will be part of a Lunar Eclipse. Joining meal now live from the me now live from the ktvu newsroom is that man right there, astronomer jerald from the chabot space center. Good morning. What can we expect to see this weekend up there . Well, there will be a supermoon and a Lunar Eclipse. Now, Lunar Eclipse is when the shadow of the earth crosses over the moon. You will see the moon rising about 7 00, maybe a little bit after 7 00 and it will be reddish in color. And it will be very large. The moon will be closer than typical. The moons orbit is an ellipse like oval. Sometimes its close. Sometimes its far away. This particular evening, it will be close and well have the eclipse. Now, quick question, will it be noticeable . Most people probably wont notice the difference. It will be 14 inches larger than the last eclipse, but, you know, it will be already in the eclipse when the moon is rising on the eastern horizon. It will look big because you will be seeing it close to the horizon and that gives you a reference point. Makes you look big anyway. It will look even bigger. Why are these circumstances so unusual, gerald . Well, the moon goes through eclipses periodically. Its been kind of unusual. Weve had four of them in a row every six months. We wont have another Lunar Eclipse until january of 2018. So this is, you know, kind of the laughs chance for a couple of years now. And whats unusual about this is that its also coincidental with the supermoon. The moon will be closest to the earth about an hour before the eclipse. It will be nice and big. Im glad i had a chance to talk to you. Now, tell me one more time, when can we see the special Lunar Eclipse. Okay. The moon will rise for the bay area right around 6 53, 6 54. Probably wont get up high enough for you to see until about 7 00 or 7 15 . And at that time, the eclipse will already be in progress. So when you look at the moon, its gonna be kind of a reddish gray color and it will remain that way until about 9 00 or so. Good info. Now i know how to prepare. Jerald, our astronomer at the chabot space and science center, thank you. You are welcome. We have new images of pluto. Look at the texture. It looks like snakeskin. A High Resolution image indicates a wide array of colors and a varying terrain. Nasa released the pictures. It was captured on july 14th. It does look like snakeskin. A Mountain Range on pluto has a jagged ridgeline, creates what scientists are describing as Something Like a snakeskin. Now, another High Resolution image shows colors that range from brown to white and then some shades in between. New horizons is a new spacecraft that gets close enough to take these images of pluto. Sal has got some disturbing images about our morning commute on 880 in oakland. We had a crash on 880 getting up to downtown. Really made oakland a mess, dave. Lets go to 880 northbound. Its very, very slow getting up to downtown oakland. Things are Getting Better because the crash has been cleared. Not good enough really for you to go out there unless you absolutely have to. Were also looking at 580 westbound. You can see traffic is slow. This is 280 northbound in san jose. That traffic is going to be moderate. So please give yourself extra time today especially on 880. Lets go to steve in the weather center. Thank you, sir. We have cooler weather for some. That will be on the coast in San Francisco as well. Robert wilcox says i can see some of that fog from hayes valley. Sunset district. Came in. It wasnt there at 4 00, 5 00 a. M. A. M. And it came in, formed over the golden gate right now and cassie jean in el granada, happy aloha friday, steve. Well, thank you. Sun in eg but fog in half moon bay. Ready for a cooldown. Thats not something that you say very often. You dont hear that very often. It will be cooling down. A lot more yesterday. Nice sunrise pictures.
