Transcripts For KTVU KTVU Mornings On 2 At 7am 20151002

Here is sal at 7 00 unless i missed something. So far okay . Yeah its been okay. There has been some slow traffic but right now we are looking just okay and we have slow traffic to deal with. Lets start off with a look at the commute in the east bay. We start a lot with the bay bridge toll plaza because it will be slow there as you come up to the maccarthur maze. About a 25 minute delay. As we go to the maps i want to show you highway 4 and 680. Slow traffic on highway 4. It looks like the antioch commute has cleared up. Not a lot going on in antioch. Westbound 580 is better than it normally is. And 680 is actually a lot lightener dublin down to fremont as we look at the south bay you can see there is slow traffic here and there. 101, 280, and 85. 280 is not too bad. Lets take a look at it from our camera. There is a little bit of slowing getting up to highway 17. Lets go back to the desk. Sal, thank you. Umpqua Community College is closed this morning and you know why. Windy after a gunman walked one day after a gunman walked into a classroom and opened fire. Hundreds gathered last night to hold a vigil. This morning we are learning more information about the victims as well as the gunman. Doctors held a News Conference. A total of nine people were injured in the attack. Six of them are still hospitalized this morning. Listed from critical to stable condition but all of those who are wounded are expected to survive. The head physician at a roseberg hospital says many Staff Members are Close Friends or relatives of the victims. That has been the challenge supporting patients and families but also the care givers. All of the injuries are gunshot wounds. Some of the survivors were shot in the stomach and leg. Retired doctors and staff who had the day off yesterday rushed to the hospital as soon as they heard about the shooting. The shooting as you can imagine has sparked a lot of talk, about a lot of conversations about Campus Security and policing. This morning we found a Bay Area School that happens to be doing something proactive to get ready for a possible situation like what happened in oregon. Janine de la vega is live in union city. Tell us about a potentially life saving drill. Reporter we are here at missions hill. Students have the day off. In about an hour or so is teachers and staff will be coming here and they will be participating in an active shooter training. Now this happens to be very proactive for the school and it was planned before the shooting. Now the organization that runs the program is from Homeland Security. What is happening here in union city is that they are all going to file into an auditorium. About 90 educators. And they will be presented with various videos and power point presentation on histories and studies done on past School Shootings. They will have Law Enforcement personnel here speaking as well and they will be advising the teachers on how to observe a shooters behavior. How to prepare for it. And also best reporting strategies. Now this was all made can half the people are attending are teachers and staff here. But the ere half are school staff and teem teachers from all over the bay area. Who want to come here and learn more how prepear hops and their students. Well bring you a live report from the College Campus in roseberg, oregon. Police at San Francisco state are warning student there is after a man sexually molested a female student on campus. Christien kafton is live to explain what happened and what Advice Police are giving. That is right San Francisco state campus San Francisco state police here on campus are warning students to be aware about this. About this incident that happened on wednesday night here near burke hall near the campus. It all started around 7 00 again on wednesday evening. A student tells us she was walk and a man started making conversation with her. He followed her inside burke hall where he grabbed her p pressed his face on her stomach. The man sat her on a bench, held on to her hand and kissed her on the face several times. The woman said she pulled away and started walking toward muni but the man followed her. The woman was able to get on a bus and leave campus. Police are warning other students about this incident. The women we talked to on campus say they are taking security very seriously. I just got an email with the report and i read it. And pretty creepy. What do you think . Yeah its weird. Its not really scary its just creepy. Reporter police say the man was 2023 years old. 6 feet tall with a slender build light complexion with brown hair and eyes. Police again warning women to be very aware of their surroundings. They are also advising women to look into the possibility of down loading an app they can use to notify their friends about where they are and the status of their security. And christien its a very low tech system but they have Campus Security. Reporter she does ask for the Campus Police to walk her around if she is Walking Around at night or notify her friends. That is one of the things you can certainly do or you can go hightech with it a hightech app that notifies your friends about where you are and can even notify the police if somebody approaches you and you dont like what you see. Okay christien, thank you. Time is 7 07. Still ahead all morning long we have been following new developments coming out of oregon about that shooting. Up next we will bring you a live report from the campus. Also california is dropping out a multistate investigation into the volkswagen emissions scandal. At 7 30 why our state is taking matters into its own hands. We are looking at a commute where traffic will be busy on the morning commute. You can see it slowing down there. Well tell you a little more about the east bay commute when we come back. Nice friday on tap. Mostly sunny. It will be warmer this afternoon. Yet we do have changes we should know about for the weekend. Oh, well thats a good price. Seriously . Ill grab two. Get ready to save. Love the honey nut cheerios. The safeway stock up sale is on. The safeway stock up sale. Its just better. Good morning. Welcome back to mornings on 2. We continue that coverage of that deadly shooting in oregon. From coast to coast people offering support. Its a small Junior College of only 3300 full and part time students. William is joining us from roseberg, oregon to talk to us about how that community is dealing this morning. William. Reporter gasia, there was a vigil last night. They spelled out the initials of the university of the school rather. They sang amazing grace. Played taps. Said prayers. Its a small community. They say that everyone here probably knew someone connected to it. But you know it could have been a lot worse. Because 26yearold chris mercer had four weapons, several magazines. There were 35 students inside that speech and writing class but it took only eight minutes before deputies arrived after receiving the 911 calls. It was in that shootout that mercer was killed. So it could have been a lot worse. Unlike columbine when they waited for swat to arrive these guys acted and it probably saved lives. I know the atf is sending its own agents to the scene there in roseberg, can yogi me a sense, its a small town about 200 miles away from a big city. Give me a sense of how the police force reacted, of the response the town is getting from outside agencies to help. Reporter well because this may be considered a hate crime, there is a lot of fbi and atf obviously. One thing to remember when weve had shootings in the past lets say the lapd officer who left a manifesto, or the student at ucsb who left a video. You understood the motivations. A search warrant was done at the apartment last night where he lived with his mother to obtain that information as to why. We dont know his connection to the university. Why this class . Why this day . Why here . Why now . We dont know those things. Did he get a bad grade . Did he have a problem with another student . The atf is here to find out where he got his weapons, was it obtained legally. And of course you have the fbi to get into motive and make sure there was no connection to other conspirators or those that knew what he was going to do. And there is talks that the shooter may have posted some things online. Im sure authorities are looking at that as well. Reporter yeah im sure they are. There is a whole social media aspect of this now that people have to investigate. In terms of the authenticity you are never really sure. What we do know is three different survivors have told the media or relatives that indeed this guy when he went into her he is a if yo there is already there are three independent sources if you will that this troops inside that classroom. Before we let you go. We heard the the father of the shooter is on his way up there. Is there any reaction in the community to that . Reporter you know, dave, good question. I listened to the interviews with both the stepsister as well as the father. Both of them express shock. However, the person who lived in the apartment below this guy said he was a real odd ball. That he would sit up in the balcony alone at night with nothing but a little flashlight. People who grew up with him until los angeles said he was very quiet. That he liked target practice. He had a big bag with a long gun and road on his bicycle with camouflage pants and black boots. Not necessarily your typical kid. William thank you for that update. Well have much more on the latest developments coming up at 7 30. Stay tuned for that. You can also follow us on twitter and facebook for updates. Area of low pressure has dropped into georgia. There is another weak one right off. And the rainfall patrol jury excuseds could be 1215 for some.
