New details emerging from the investigation into the massacre inside a gay nightclub in Orlando Early yesterday morning. Officials have been removing the bodies of the victims and letting families know their loved ones are among the 49 People Killed in that nightclub. It is all being investigated as an act of terrorism. Ktvu fox 2s alex savidge is in the newsroom on more how the shooter may have been inspired by isis. Right, dave. Good morning to you. This was the deadliest mass shooting in American History. Authorities say it was carried out by a man who pledged his allegiance to the Islamic State during the attack. The gunman targeted the pulse nightclub near downtown orlando which bills itself as the citys premiere gay nightclub. Just after 2 a. M. On sunday morning, club goers heard gunfire. They scrambled to escape. Authorities say the shooter, omar mateen, used an Assault Rifle to open fire on the crowd. Now, after shooting more than 100 people, the gunman took several people hostage inside a restroom. Police negotiated for several hours before using an Armored Vehicle to smash a hole in the wall of the club to rescue those hostages. The shooter ultimately was killed in a gun battle with a s. W. A. T. Team. For the officers who responded early sunday morning, it was a scene of absolute horror. Many of them saw some carnage that they would never see in any other location. If you think about this, this is not a war zone that we are living in. This is a Civilized Society and we had to deal with something unthinkable. Now, the fbi says the shooter had previously been investigated for possible ties to terrorism, but ultimately was cleared in those investigations. According to authorities, he legally purchased the Assault Rifle and the handgun that were used inside that weekend attack inside that nightclub in orlando. This morning authorities said that nearly all of the victims have now been positively identified and the work is underway right now to notify all of their loved ones. Thank you. Survivors of the orlando nightclub attack are now talking about their desperate struggle to stay alive during the mass shooting. George ortiz was in the crowded nightclub surrounded by chaos when he saw a man with a semi automatic rifle shooting people. What i saw and i can actually hear it, was like bullets flying. Flying in. They held a very emotional candlelight vigil. While the fbi leads the investigation into the shooting, president obama said this was an attack on all of us. The president called it especially heartbreaking for the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community. We pray for their families who are grasping for answers with broken hearts. We stand with the people of orlando who have endured a terrible attack on their city. Although its still early in the investigation, we know enough to say that this was an act of terror and an act of hate. President obama said the pulse nightclub was more than just a nightclub. It was a symbol of solidarity and empowerment for the Gay Community. He repeated his call for stricter gun laws. Hillary clinton is joining the American People in praying for the victims. It reminds us that weapons of war have no place on our streets. President ial candidate Bernie Sanders had strong words for isis. It goes without saying, in my mind, that isis must be destroyed and that we have got to do everything humanly possible to prevent these types of tragedies from occurring again. Ktvu fox 2s janine de la vega, youre outside oracle arena. Its a big story. You have more on tonights game. Good morning. Reporter good morning, dave. Yeah, its going to be loud here inside oracle arena. A lot is riding on this game, and the player that really wants to be here is Draymond Green. He was suspended by the nba yesterday after the league determined he committed a flagrant foul in game 4. It was his fourth overall. Now, this is the play that was reviewed. Green and lebron james got tangled up. James knocked over green and then stepped over him. Thats when green swiped his hand and made contact with james groin. Here is what warriors coach steve kerr when asked what he said to green about the incident. Thats just something that stays within the team. Its not anything im going to comment on. I am disappointed for him that he cant play in a big game. The ruling has been made and we have got move on. Reporter before green was suspend the, some sports analysts were speculating he could be named the mvp for the finals. But now its really unknown how the fouls and the suspension will factor into that. Golden state leads the series 3 1. Coach kerr said other players will fill the void. You know, it was the vigil was inspiring. We had thousands and thousands of people who showed up on short notice. We could come together as a community to mourn the people who were murdered in orlando and the survivors. We do what we always do here in the castro, in the Lbgt Community, when we have these horrible situations. We come together. We mourn and then we recommit to the fight. Reporter what was your sense . Was there more sorrow or anger over the shooting . I think both. You know, when you look back decades and decades, our community, the Lbgt Community, we have been under assault. We were harassed. Our kids are bullied. People are murdered. Transgender women are being murdered at unprecedented rates. We have been under assault for many, many, many years. So there is a lot of anger about why this keeps happening. But we wanted to also be in solidarity with orlando with all of these Beautiful People who were gunned down. Reporter now, when you come up, we talked briefly about changes in terms of security here in the castro. Lets talk about changes we can expect to see in the neighborhood, and pride festivities. First lets start with immediate changes you are looking to make here in the Castro District. Well, i spoke with the chief of Police Yesterday, and he and the department are extremely focused on making sure that pride season is safe, that the parade and festival are safe, that our bars and nightclubs are safe. So later this week i am going to be convening a meeting at city hall with the Police Department and with our bar and club owners from the castro and delta market to make sure that we are having good communication, that bars and clubs understand what they need to do to be as safe as possible and have good collaboration. We are going to have a great pride season. Its going to be safe and festive, and we are not going to let this hate crime get us down. We are going to respond by celebrating and embracing the community. Reporter we heard some of the bars and restaurants are going to be increasing security. Can we expect to see that soon . Can we expect an increased Police Presence in this neighborhood . Yes. I think we will see an increased focus. I know that a lot of the bars and clubs are thinking very hard about how they can take their already existing security and make it even better, and also they want to know what they need to do. So our Law Enforcement agencies need to be providing advice and information to the bars and clubs so that we can make sure this never happens here. Reporter okay. Thank you so much for joining us this morning. Again, as you can tell, certainly sorrow on many peoples minds. Security also paramount on a lot of peoples minds. Over here you can see the tributes still on the ground at the harvey milk plaza and these notes here. I pointed them out earlier to you. A note to the people who are in orlando. We are praying for orlando. Such a sad time. May god be with the family and friends. Literally hundreds of notes like this. So clearly the pain in orlando being felt right here in San Francisco and through the bay area. Cristian, thank you. Now to san jose where a crowd of people gathered at a Community Center to help each other cope with the tragedy. Rainbow flags at halfstaff at the Community Center on the alameda. Back to the desk. The deadly mass shooting at a gay club in orlando yesterday. 50 people, including the gunman, are dead. Dozens more are hospitalized. This is being investigated as an act of terror. Alex savidge, you say investigators are talking to people who knew the gunmen. They are trying to find out if he acted alone or with help from a group . Yeah, that is part of the investigation happening now by federal authorities. We know the man who carried out the deadliest mass shooting in American History was described, has been described as violent and unstable by many who knew him. And it appears as though he was inspired by isis when he opened fire early sunday morning. This morning we are learning more about the victims. More information coming to light. Here is a tweet that was sent out by your lieutenant governor. You see it says one of the victims names. Edward sotomayor jr. 34 years old. Travel Agency Manager and university of San Francisco graduate. And that information just coming out a short time ago as we learn more about the 49 people, innocent people gunned down inside that club. The massacre happened at the pulse nightclub, which bills itself as orlandos premiere gay nightclub. As club goers realized someone was shooting, they rushed to get out of the place. Authorities say the gunman, identified add omar mateen, fired an Assault Rifle into that packed club, hitting more than 100 people. As Orlando Police officers responded there to that scene, the shooter then took several people hostage inside a restroom. Police negotiated with the gunman for several hours before finally using an Armored Vehicle to smash a hole in the wall of the club and rescue those hostages. Based on statements made by the suspect, based on information we received from the suspect and from the hostages and people inside, we believe further loss of life was imminent. I made the decision to commence the rescue operation. Reporter and the police chief believes the carnage could have been worse had they not gone inside the club the way that they did. The police chief says the gunman came out of that same hole that had been punched in the wall of the club and thats when he got into a gun battle with police, with s. W. A. T. Officers, and he was killed. Authorities say while mateen was barricaded in the bathroom for those three hours, he called up 911 and pledged his allegiance to the Islamic State. Mateen had previously been investigated for possible ties to terrorism, but he had been cleared. Despite being on the fbis radar because of prior investigations, mateen was able to legally purchase the weapons he used in yesterdays attack. Thank you. There will be a piece of energy rotating around that early thursday, which would give us the best opportunity for any rain. You know, usually i dont show this graphic this time of year because we dont have any rain. But there is going to be drizzle. I think from santa rosa north on thursday looks to be the best opportunity. Today we have a lot of low clouds. Breezy. Cool. It will be sunny for some. I think you will notice that braze. Maybe a little morning drizzle. If not today, it will be tomorrow. Temperature are on their way down with 60s, 70s, and 80s. The investigation into that deadly mass shooting at an orlando nightclub continues. Caroline shively live in orlando with the latest developments. President obama just spoke on the issue saying there is no clear evidence the orlando shooter was directed or part of a larger plot. What are you learning from police at the scene . Reporter police are looking locally and through the country. It is a criminal investigation according to the fbi special agent in charge who is on the ground here. He wants to know did anyone in the area or elsewhere know about what he was planning . Did mateen tell anyone about his planned attack . There is also that third gun. He had two guns on him. There is a third one. The atf said they havent tracked down where it came from. Where did that come through . That criminal investigation is going through right now. No results from it yet. And the fbi did stress to us there is no credible threat to the public, but they want to know what went on. Thats one of the things we are going to see going forward. The other track is very interesting. Federal officials are also going to be scrubbing omar mateens electronics. What they find in there will be so incredibly important over the next 72 hours. Did he talk to friends . Did he talk to someone on facebook . And did he have any direct communication with isis members overseas. Now, from what president obama is saying, it appears they are trying to rule that out, that he was indeed directed by isis. It looks more as of now that he was inspired by isis. The end result, of course, is still 49 people dead. Another near 50 injured. Caroline, this sounds similar to what we were learning in the hours and days immediately after the San Bernardino attacks here in california. Reporter yes. Its very similar to that. And one of the interesting ways is to analyze how the Orlando Police went after it, as in San Bernardino. Everything we have learned sin columbine, if you have sunday you think is going to commit suicide or wants you to kill them, you go in hard and fast. They had a three hour lag here where mateen called 911. He was calm. He was cool. He had hostages. Four or five people barricaded in that bathroom. Another 15 in a nearby bathroom. They held steady for three hours until he said something. The police chief, i asked him straight up. He wouldnt tell me what the words were that triggered them that they knew more people would die and they busted through with the explosives and Armored Vehicle. Mateen jumped through the hole. He was ready to take them on. Thats when police shot him to death. Before you go, talk briefly about they were removed the bodies, all of the bodies out of the nightclub now . Reporter they did by 11 p. M. Last night. That horrible scene. One of the people inside described what it was like, because people who thought their loved ones may be in there were texting, were calling. So you had bodies piled up in the nightclub with their cell phones beeping and buzzing and glowing in their pockets. The folks who had to go in there, the crime scene investigators and cleanup crews, now how horrible it would end for the friend and families, mothers and fathers. They were, indeed, did an amazingly fast job of cleaning those bodies out of there. Still the notification going on through Central Florida today. Certainly, a lot of police and investigators at the scene. Are there any people coming there either to mourn or to try to learn information, or is the public being kept away from where you are . Reporter the public is being kept away from the nightclub scene. This entire street behind me, you can see the sheriff and the fdle, they have set up mobile command units behind me. We are talking about many other things. Lets check your weather right now. Steve paulson is right over year. Cool, cool. Starts today with a big fog bank. You can feel a little bit of a coolness there because the breeze is onshore and its going to continue to give us a rather breezy to windy conditions and temperatures are on their way even with sunshine today. It will not be as warm as yesterday for many. We had a cooldown yesterday towards san jose and towards the north bay. Today it will be for everybody. Much cooler tuesday, wednesday, thursday. There is a little bit of clearing up on the northern sonoma coast. Mendocino coast on that fog bank. So much that might get chewed up later as this strong system develops to the north of us. Gusts to 36 at travis. Roaring right along. Even out to livermore west at 13. Sfo. Hayward. Southeast Mountain View and san jose. A lot of 50s in between. Its going to be a cooler pattern here for the entire week as this system digs in and then slowly digs along the west coast, which will position itself to us late thursday. Low clouds, windy for some. 70s and 80s inland. Morning drizzle. Looks like temperatures though near coverage to going below for many the next couple of days. Sal, what do you have for us . A lot of slow traffic, steve. As a matter of fact, that is going to be slow in a lot of the spots you expect it to be. I was hoping for a monday that was better, but it seems like the weather is february. Its like a february commute. Everyone is on the road. People go somewhere and traffic it backed up to the maze. Here it is past 8 30, and lots of times we start seeing improvement in the summer. Not today. We have had a couple of incidents. Nothing major. Looking at the commute here on the san mateo bridge or some of the other bridges, its still very busy over the peninsula. A crash southbound 101 near 92. 92 is also very slow. We can go to the maps. I will show you. Look at 92. It is slow from 280 getting over here. So almost everywhere you look there is a slowdown getting into the valley on 237 and 101 slow as well. 8 36.
